I'm a retired mechanical and automotive engineer so I have some street cred. I must say after 45 years listening to guys explain things I have to say you are one of the best! Clean, precise no unnecessary banter just straight to the point and you know your stuff. No substitute for experience. As far as a video presentation, no damn annoying music or trying to be an "entertainer", that just gets old. Great job!

the pump has to go back a couple inches to clear the input shaft. if you cant clear the rear flange, loosen or remove the motor mounts to gain clearance. @@WilliamChiasson-pr3pj

Loved the video I’ve just been installing the new forward frictions into mine and you mentioned a little resistance is fine but with mine it’s really tight and won’t turn, I’m wondering if the new frictions create extra drag? Or maybe I’ve got the snap rings mixed up? Any advise would be awsome, keep up the good work!

Awesome Video!! Thanks so much for making it! I have a 2010 Malibu Wakesetter with a velvet drive 72L-V and while its not exactly like the 10 17 that you rebuilt in the video, there are a lot of similarities. While wakesurfing about a month ago, we blew out the front seal. After watching your video, I've decided to rebuild mine myself. I have obtained the velvet drive service manual but still have a few questions that hopefully you can help me with. On both the service manual and your video, the end of the planetary gear has a lock nut, but on the 72l-V there isn't one, there is a female spline that the v drive slides into. So how do I remove the Planetary gear from the housing. Second question is how is the control valve removed. Also, how do you recommend me cleaning all the parts so that I don't get any rust or damage to them. Thanks Again!

Just want to start by saying amazing video helped my father rebuild one in his Mastercraft over this weekend. Everything seemed to of went back together properly and seemed to be within tolerances. Amazing video, I was in awe watching you fly thru both the disassembly and assembly of that transmission. Question: I have a Borg Warner 1:1 in my 1995 Malibu. The Manual says to use 10w tractor hydraulic fluid which I have used since the boat was new. I recently took my boat a mechanic for an engine issue and they also decided to change the trans fluid and they used the regular red transmission fluid. I'm not sure exactly which fluid. Should I change this back the hydraulic fluid? If so how well do I need to flush out the red stuff. I'm doing an engine swap so fluid will be drained anyway. Thanks!!

I have question thanks, ....when we started the boat engine today then once warm I pushed the throttle forward and engaged forward gear, as I gently throttled away from the boat ramp at about 1500 rpm I heard a serious roughness that caused the 125hp inboard to stall, I started it again gently engaged reverse and again as in increased the revs it's sounded rough as hell with each rotation and again the motor stalled. and this is before I could even throttle down to commence take of, Finally I started the engine again but very gently feathered the forward throttle slowly and increased the revs very slowly and the boat continued to about 3000 rpm and 15 knots plus, but it's was sounding rough again so I back off to idle speed then forwarded again faster and instantly heard rough grinding noised and the motor stalled before the boat could even get to 2000 revs, instantly stalling both in forward and reverse after successfully engaging the gears but stalling as I push the throttle only up to 1100 or 2000 rpm, when in reverse at idle speed I'm sure I can hear a rotating knock or crunch gear type of sound that happens in rithium with each rotation be it 750rpm or 1200 rpm. Can you please advise. Kind regards, and thanks so much for this great tutorial. Be we, regards from Robert, Melbourne Australia.

@@scottsmith2869 I’d check your reverse pressure at the tap in the front housing. It’s an 1/8npt plug right at the bellhousing. Should have 100-125psi in reverse there. If you don’t have it then either you have a leak in the reverse circuit or a control valve. If you have good pressure then the trans needs to come out as it’s an internal failure of some sort.

Thanks for the info. I’ll check the pressure first. Take care.

Well I found the problem. This older trans has only one reverse disc. It is broke and the springs got mangled up. I got all my parts and started putting it back together yesterday while watching your videos, pausing as I went forward. I got to the pressing of the forward clutch hub to the piston assembly. It was almost all the way down. I checked the snap ring grove and one side was half covered and the other had a bit more to go, one more pump on the press!!!!!!!! Then pow,,, the bottom of the piston case broke. It must have been slightly cocked? I got a used one ordered. Any suggestions on what not to do ???

Thanks so much for these videos! I live in Key West and do various marine work. A customer of mine has a jet boat that was slipping on one engine, shipping to the mainland shopping for servicing was going to be quite expensive. I was surprised to find that his 10-18-002 only had one reverse steel and two plates.

Am I the only one watching, asking themselves, "why can't it be as simple as an outboard transmission?"

The bronze clutch plates warp. But if everything is done right , they are neat. But if they stick together?, just watch a youtube video with a big boat running over everyone at the marina. Guy freakin out wondering why?
