Loved it in 1982 when i bought the album "Black Metal" and still love it today. This song belongs to my all time favorites. Black Metal, especially side A, to the best albums ever.
Man. Back in the day when these guys came on the video shows. People were scared of them like you thought you were doing something wrong by watching Venom. And we fuckin loved every minute of it!!!
It's not about technical skill, it's about attitude and spirit. That's the heart of metal and I for one hope it stays that way. And I see Anvil get praise, they aren't forgotten. I've even seen their albums sold in some of the most mainstream of stores.
I saw this band in 1983. They started in 1979. They were the first true thrash band, though they liked to describe themselves as black metal like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Voivod they all came after.
Well said eveningtsar, This video is the first time i seen Venom on tv back in 1984 and i loved the band ever since. They still put forth awesome music today 31 years later!!!
@666kerryking, yeah, I guess that's why their second album is called "Black Metal," Cronos has referred to their style as "black metal" for nearly 30 years, and a number of black metal bands cite Venom as an influence.
i haden't heard any of venoms music till 2006 and this was the first song i heard on metal a headbangers journey and i think venom rock long live venom.
Quite simple. Way back in 1982, long before you were born, there was nothing in metal as evil looking and wild like Venom. In fact, the song itself is scary, because the riff Mantas plays is so wicked it freezes your blood.
You might like to give Midnight and Trench Hell a listen then. They're recent bands that are bringing back the 80s black thrash style. Both are amazing, IMO.
Considering when Venom first played, they're like a mix of power metal and british new wave metal on three shots of doctor proscribed adrenaline. Now we see them as pioneers of thrash and black metal and not as shocking as bands today but back then Venom must have been horrifying.
Just the intro alone! Even the hardcore of hardcore punkers loved these guys back in the day! Watch Venom interviews, dudes with green mohawks and bald heads loved them as much as Discharge! For the guys that don't know, Kirk from Metallica wore a Discharge shirt on the back cover of "Ride The Lightening"!!! Check Discharge out! Brutal UK hardcore punk!
i hear what you're saying, but it's because the Ramones simplified rock n roll. stripped the fat and brought it back to minimalist fun. and kinda-sorta inventing punk rock while doing so. but Venom is in the metal genre which prides itself on technicality and musicianship, so for a band like Venom to come around really messed with people' sensibilities. i agree with you though about their mistakes and whatnot. it only added to their charm for me because they had punk rock attitude and approach.
back when i was 12 years old, my friends older brother gave us a bag, full of old Metal EP's,Tapes and CD's. I was this Venom Tape, and said this could be interesting, turns out i hated it, it was to brutal for me, i was not ready for Venom... and now 8 years later, i love them! every time i listen to this song, it takes me back to the time i was just a little boy! Hail Venom!
@666deathghost Yes, indeed, I hear quite a lot of Motorhead influence. I would venture a guess that Motorhead was the favorite band of one or more of the guys in Venom, prior to them forming the band. You can hear influences of different metal and punk bands from the mid to late 70's, but Motorhead is definitely the strongest influence. Same band configuration as Motorhead too.
@michellepg13 no one complained because no one read it. the movies allowed everyone to see that it really existed so they could see how horrible it is on both fronts. that aside, you kids are both right. Venom is both thrash and black metal. Welcome to Hell was a much more thrash-y album as opposed to Black metal, which gave black metal both the sound and the name, especially with "Buried Alive". the end.
@evolooshion oh don't get me wrong; they are alot of good Black Metal bands out there. But there's alot of generic stuff as well, who could learn a thing or two from Venom.
Actually Venom isn't really thrash OR black metal. They are one of the main influences of both of those genres though. They are the fusion of heavy metal and hardcore punk. This fusion they created, is what led to thrash, and later black metal. You also have to keep in mind thrash evolved quite a bit over time, and black metal did also to an even greater degree.
It's a shame that a person who doesn't like this music comes and attacks other people and their comments just because they're different from him; that's another way of raising violence somehow. As for me, I like heavy metal, and I really like this song... It's just brutal, devastating!!!
You're nuts! Bathory was a Motorhead cover band when "Welcome To Hell" came out. Look at the first Bathory album to see how much they ripped it off. I love Bathory, too, but Venom is UNDISPUTED first BM band!
dont think so. the only versions i have of it are rerecorded or singles and none of the albums have it on the main cd its only on the bonus one so i dunno. good song though
@MrMig3 oh you haven't watched GET THRASHED? a documentary about thrash metal... well there is mentioned metallica as first very successful thrash metal sounding band that influenced slayer and other bands, they showed others "real thrash sound" as they said there but they haven't said a thing about venom in whole film...
I'm a little drunk, but I think I can reasonably respond to that comment. I hadn't heard of Anvil until the documentary had come out, so I guess that would explain the sudden popularity. But still, the fact remains that Venom where a defining point in extreme metal's progression and impacted on Hellhammer and Mayhem, which by themselves, where some of the most influential metal bands of all time. Anvil certainly have the spirit, but Venom are legendary and simply done more for the genre.
I saw em in 84 and in 85 in germany and still love this shit. You should see my daughters face when she s watching videos like this....dad is an weirdo...
@f89276704 Yea, I think he came up with that quite early on. What he meant by it, and what other people meant by it are a little different though. Sometimes music can be hard to categorize too. Does it have to have the black metal type vocals to be black metal? Opinions vary. I would consider bands like Venom, and Celtic Frost, to be more proto-black metal. It still sounded more like a mix of it's influences, rather what is usually classified as black metal post-80's.
Venom have set a standard which i love, they wanted straigght forward, undiluted brutal metal. All Hail to venom for sticking to their guns. They are not a band who sell out like emo/ scene kid bands like Bring me the 'hair extensions' (horizon)
Marvelous. They started the Early trash scene Way back, without them there woulnd be bands like Slayer,Kreator, and all the other bands before them. they started it, and other bans took it to the next level, cheers :p
I dare any set of young men to push a new style like that so fucking hard. Whether it's progressive artsy rock or bestial extreme metal. I swear, Venom and Rush are probably the best underappreciated trios in the Rock-Metal-Punk world in my opinion.
I am Galgura, vampire supreme! Hmm.. sounds like somthing you would order at Taco Bell. "Hi, I'd like a Galgura Vampire Supreme and some Nachos Bell Grande."
@WweThemes120 Agreed. People who say Venom weren't black metal are looking at it through the perspective of today. Back then this was the MOST BRUTAL music imaginable. This was the start of it all: black/death/grindcore/etc........you have to keep perspective. Other bands came along and codified certain genres but Venom did it all first. Chuck Schuldiner agreed.
