I have never owned a quality longboard. Today I received my Bear Gen 6 50 degrees 180mm trucks put them on my 9 ply 40* Maple deck, put bearings inside my orangutang 70mm 78a wheels and all I can say is holy crap. I didn't know what I was missing. I thought a truck was a truck. I learned that I love raked. My trucks weren't raked and I thought I was good at pumping before. Now with the bear gen 6 trucks, I can pump from a standstill, I can pump at low speed, I can pump at high speed. All I could do before is sort of pump if I already had pushed myself up to a high speed. I notice a difference in the bearings too. But I think its mainly that my bearings were so old and tarnished it didn't matter how many times I cleaned them or how much I lubed them. As long as there is no wind, I can push just one time and I will slowly glide over to the end of my street (which is 330m). I'm just so happy I ended up buying the Bear Gen 6. I was all worried because they seemed so tight since there was no wiggle in the trucks at all. Then I get on it lean to turn and I almost fly off of the board as I am not expecting it to turn with such ease. I love it. Thank you for the great video. It was what gave me the shove I needed to buy real trucks. And with them, I built a whole new setup that I am actually in love with. It is like night and day. I can't believe how these things turn. I still just can't believe it. And though I feel the stock 90a bushings that come with it are amazing and perfect and the best I could ever have. I am going to try the venom tall cone and plug barrel in SHR. I mainly just carve around on flat roads. I do a lot of pumping (now that I can do it with such ease). I will hit a hill from time to time but there is only one good one in this area and it is a max of 30mph. I'm about to go on another cruise tonight. I love longboarding at night. It's definitely the best time. Right around when all the cars are off the road. I tend to go on long cruises though. I put at least 70 miles on my longboard a month and that is at the very minimum. Sometimes it can be as much as 250 miles. I understand people do much more than I do. But I just got back into this. I am 35 now. I stopped longboarding when I was about 15. All I need now is a longboard partner here in Hawaii, Does anyone live in Hawaii?. Going alone is fun but I would rather share the experience with someone else than being alone all the time. Any other bushing brands that make a tall cone and plug barrel I should look into? Just realized how much I typed. Long story short. I didn't know trucks made such a huge difference, it is night and day when coming from the trucks installed on your budget longboard to bear gen 6. The difference is mindblowing. I could never go back, also, I'm lonely. lol.

So I have a set of bear smokies. They have an insert, but it's plastic. So I cut a set of caliber bushings with the built in insert and used them, as the smokies run tall bushings and don't come with the insert. It works like a charm

Great , useful data that I've been using for years , plugs are even more common these days w Cal IIIs & Gen6 recommending them.... considering the lack of product selection of these 5 duros , we have few options ( I cut my own rings) aside from HPF 96,93,90,87&85 duros... how about some SHR plugs in packs w 2plugs ,& not this tomfoolery of 1 plug w a useless barrel meaning I buy two 13.50 bushings , half of which I won't use . thanks for all your products & steeze

Good to know. I currently have my old gullwing charger 2 trucks. Would plugs fit boardside? Or do I have to do a little sanding down like for bear gen 6?

Yo, is it okay to put this on roadside on my caliber v3? I'm try to run a tall bushings on mine, but it seems impossible since I can't use any plug bushings cause there's no tall options. This is only possible if use the plus on roadside.

These fit my Holeys in exactly the same way Bear Gen 6's do. The plug protrudes past the bushing seat on the opposite (roadside) side slightly.
@phildupuis-skateboarding
@phildupuis-skateboarding Год назад
So you should sand it down a bit (top of the plug part) so your roadside bushing can perfectly seat into the hanger. If you don't, you create a small gap, and so a slop. A few minutes job for a top feel !
@nickamarit
@nickamarit Год назад
@@phildupuis-skateboarding Yup, they fit quite snug now. But I don't know why I did it though... cuz Holey hangers don't turn well without hourglass boardside bushings and cone roadside bushings.

I've been thinking of getting bear gen 6. How much did you have to sand down the plug?
@nickamarit

@@xcharlesbronsonx Just a little bit... like around 1.5mm? But honestly just get the insert bushings for Bear Gen 6 from Pat's Risers. That way you can run any bushing combo you want in your Bears.

@@nickamarit this is the 4th time I'm posting this. For some reason, youtube doesn't let me post here or removes it. I looked up pats risers site. And saw that they have multiple types of insert bushings. Can you please explain how insert bushings work? Specifically, the bear insert bushings from pats gets used in a truck? The standard setup is washer +bushing roadside +bushing boardside+washer So where would the insert bushings go? Are the insert bushings supposed to replace the standard bushing setup? Or do they add to it? Where does it go? Is it like the caliber 3 shim that allows you to use regular height barrels and tall barrels with or without the shim? I'm very curious to find out You mentioned pats have Paris inserts too.

Anyone hack off the top of the plug and use it as a separate insert piece? Basically make the two piece system from the plug barrel. Feel like I may be missing something with this idea.
@huntergibson9359
@huntergibson9359 2 года назад
I don't think they sit tight enough in the hangar to be used like that. This is a solution for cast trucks that works really well, because there is not a high enough tolerance in the truck to have an interference fit between a plug and the hangar.

it's a year+ after you asked this but I still thought I'd answer for future comment readers who wanna know this answer. yes I own Cal3 & Bear Gen6 trucks ( which both use plug barrel bushings) which benefit from this stepped bushing . I had the bears first & changed our the stock bushings which came w the Gen6 130mm 40° baseplate trucks out. After I got the cal3 a few months later , I was testing various bushing duros in them . I only had 87a venom double tall barrel & a regular 87a venom barrel . I wanted to try this combo in the cal3 without the shim boardside so I could see what the shimless lean was like on the trucks.... the slop difference was very very noticable so , since I did not have a stepped , Venom plug Barrell in 87a at that time , I took the OEM Bear Gen6 gray plug bushings I saved & using a razor , cleanly sliced the step ring part of each bushing off. These fit perfectly in the truck hanger hole for kingpin & do just what they do on the actual plug .... I keep them & if I ever run the cal3s w tall barrels boardside , I can use them .... ( edit: fwiw, no, the Rogue truck Venom ring bushings won't fit in these)

Yes, but only the 95A ones are worth doing it, since a soft insert bushing is usually not effective. However, you can buy Pat's Risers insert bushings specifically for certain trucks: Cal, Paris, Aera, Bear, etc.

Would it be better if put in the roadside position - since the roadside bushings do less work than the boardside bushings?
@huntergibson9359
@huntergibson9359 2 года назад
I have no idea, if it is better, but I do this in my cal 3's because I do not have any of these in 93A yet. So I use a standard 93A barrel board side and a 90A plug barrel street side in my rear truck to stiffen it up for DH, works just fine as far as I can tell.

@@huntergibson9359 If you get a chance to get 93A plug, could you compare running that boardside with 90A barrel roadside vs. what you are running now: 93A barrel boardside and 90A plug roadside?

Do plug barrels stop wobbles?
@huntergibson9359
@huntergibson9359 2 года назад
Short answer: no. Long answer: We cannot stop wobbles entirely with standard truck designs, it is sadly just a part of how trucks work. Wobbles are an overcorrection of balancing action. the best way to combat wobbles is to practice as there is a lot of small stabilizer muscles in your ankles that can be built up to help minimize wobbles. Carving out of wobbles is effective, although it is scary. Dropping into a glove down slide if you are confident doing those will save you. There is also building trust in yourself and placing as much weight on your front foot as you can, as wobbles initiate at the rear truck, and staying calm and loose will often make wobbles go away. Next option is to change your setup. Changing baseplate angles, harder bushings, and overtightening bushings will all help minimize wobbles. IMPORTANT: these changes will only ever delay the onset of wobbles, not eliminate them. As you increase to greater speeds wobbles will come back, often more aggressively than before. Have fun skating, I know I am super late responding, but hopefully it helps someone.
@Tony-zp8xn
@Tony-zp8xn Год назад
What this dude said. This is something I've figured out in my limited skating experience (past few months). If wobbles occur, carve one way or the other a bit, and re-establish control. I've tweaked my bushings with 90a/93a roadside/boardside in the front and 93a/95a in the back. This might seen stiff to many but I weigh 190. I leave the trucks relatively looser with this setup compared to when I had all stock 90a bushings in my Caliber III trucks. Wobbles will still happen, but having a dialed in setup, safety gear, confidence in yourself, and knowing that you can correct your way out of wobbles helps a ton. Wobbles are still scary, but keep your head and carve your way out.

@@stevenhelliwell1722 I asked him the same question on his "improving my freeride" video because he tried both combinations there. He said the plug should be boardside. He tried all combinations, roadside felt weird. Seems like for the best center and stability, all the rigid stuff needs to go boardside I.e. harder bushing, plug barrel.
