So many layers to this match. Maria had beat Serena in 2004 and the tennis establishment busted a big nut afterwards thinking it had found a replacement to the Williams sisters dominance. American companies swooped in to endorse her. There were those who thought she'd never lose at Wimbledon for a long time. Enter Venus. Wrote off, dismissed - and with revenge on her mind for Serena - she played no games this match. Epic win.
Why revenge? It's sports man, fair play, not a war. Maria did nothing wrong in winning Wimbledon, just as did not Venus or for that matter anyone who achieved that much. All these people are great champions and deserve our respect.

Sharapova won in 2004 against Serena who just returned from a long injury. That was the only Wimbledon Sharapova won. It is clear that she was not the player that all those commentators and sponsors wanted her to be. Perhaps realizing that she cannot beat the William sisters, Sharapova soon used the drug that eventually got her into so much trouble.
Federer had only won 4 slams at that time, his first when he was 21 years old and Maria was much younger when she won her first grand slam. We didn't know then what we know now.

I wouldn’t say WAY better, but Venus definitely had the better overall career. I would actually say peak Maria was in that 2004 Wimbledon final. I have never seen Serena outhit like that!
Maria and Venus both suffered from late growth spurts. It hurt their games in both cases, compared to earlier. Maria's serve in 2004 was a lot more effective. I think Venus had much better strokes when she was younger and a touch shorter. All that opened the door for Serena to become the most dominant player, which might have happened anyway.

Whether your a fan of maria or not you can't deny how beautiful she is and had the talent and grit to back it up. Too bad about that doping incident. Prime Venus on grass was just phenomenal.
Pretty equally matched in every dept, but Venus’ edge in athleticism and first serve pace won her this match. Which is why she won both meetings on grass. Maria was relentless mentally.
@Krishna Kumar It was still a performance enhancer legal or not, she never won another Grandslam after coming back. Had it been Venus or Serena, every title would've been taken away from them. They were tested more than anyone else for drug in every tournament.
