Verbs "to study, to learn, to teach" | Russian Language 

My favorite part of this video is your conversation with your mom at 5:20: Федя! Чё? Что ты делаешь? Я занимаюсь!

im studying Russian. and just wanted to help with some input. because we all know Russian has its own rules. учить = to teach/to learn учиться = also to learn/ but when conjugated, it can only be used with prepositional case because it is used with location. like your example "я учусь в университете" изучать = to study academically/ this is used with subjects unlike учить например ...."я изучаю русский язык " meaning your actually taking a class and studying this language or any other subject for that matter and finally заниматься = english equivalent is "to do homework/or be engaged in an activity." This is how Russian is taught to us in America. They put a huge emphasis on how to use specific words like these properly. Just thought I'd share my input because many single words in English have multiple translations in Russian.

Dear Fedor. I know this video is 2 yrs-old and you've come a long way since then. But giving examples FIRST, and then talking about them (as little as possible) is the way to help language learners. To talk, talk, talk, and then give only a couple examples of the verb you've been blablablaing about (and then actually saying we should use another verb!) is the surest way to get sts confused and frustrated, despite your charm and charisma, which are evident. 🙂

I have listened to a number of explanations for these verbs...But yours is the simplest way...I often get puzzled with learn and teach verb....Can you plz elaborate on the diff prefixes of учить.??

So it's not about context - it's about grammar. Because there's a difference in cases used. However, I'm quite curious why the reflexive forms aren't used to make that distinction? (teach somebody vs. teach mySELF)

Then how do you say 'I teach (you) russian' since I would have put you in the dative case and not russian.

I'm confused about the first three minutes. Even if you are teaching, whatever it is that you're teaching must be the accusative case, right? It is who you are teaching (the recipients of your tutoring) who then go in the dative case, because they're the indirect object. But instead, you changed 'russian language' into dative even though it is still the direct object of the verb 'to teach'. Could you explain?

So when we think we say 'I teach Russian to someone', we are actually saying 'I introduce someone to Russian by teaching him/her'... It seems we do not have the grammatically equivalent counterpart of English 'to teach', instead, we have what is in English best translated as 'to introduce by teaching'... Look inside the logic behind it, we know how much we are influenced by Circassians and Kartvelians, and their way of viewing our world~!
