Verne did an interview during Masters week that the original tech direction called for a wide shot of the shot. Cameraman went with his gut, zoomed in, and the rest is history.
As exciting as Auburn's own radio call of the Kick Six was, I've always liked Verne's call because of its simplicity. "Touchdown, Auburn; an answered prayer!" is about as perfect a description as I can imagine.
One of his greatest quotes ever, pre-game LSU vs. Alabama 2011. "Those of us who love this sport live for nights like this." "On a night like this, stars are SUPPOSED to shine. We've got a galaxy from which to choose."
Verne has been there and on the call for some of the greatest moments in sports history. He is much, MUCH more than amazing and legendary. The man is simply phenomenal and I hope he enjoys retirement. 🤘
So many people act like that is unique. Everyone who hits it back there plays it like that. A few years before, Davies Love III made that very same shot. YER SIR with Jack and the exact timing of Jacke raising his arms... unbelievable timing.
@@jonlanier_ Davis was a bit further up than where Tiger was. Also, Tiger’s ball was right up against the edge of the thick rough which made the chip even more difficult. The fact he made it is legendary. No other golfer could’ve made that shot. No one!
The Commentator was Great.....Tiger was a Cheating Asshole Piece of Shit. How do explain his PGA legacy to my son?Arnold,Jack, Gary, Tom Watson.... Never sht on the PGA
I lived in Dallas for several years back when Verne was on a local TV station there. Always enjoyed his commentary then and for the many years since. Thanks for the memories, Verne.
@@gregjones2376 that’s the thing about it. I hate duke with all my soul and He’s basically the main reason. But that shot was so pure and the call was so great I mean the moment is just that good
GREAT GUY !!! VERNE !!! HE SPOKE YEARS AT MY 10 YEARS HERE IN MPLS. AND PLAYED SOME THESE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDING # 1 WHAT A TREAT. THANKS FOR POST PRO FOOTBALL LOW LIGHTS
Verne got his chops being the play by play radio guy for the Dallas Cowboys back in the late 70's and early 80's. Yeah I know Brad Sham did some play by play, but Verne was the main guy before he went to CBS
The thing with Verne is that I think he can call literally ANYTHING and make it epic. Some guys are better at one sport than others but Verne is so incredibly versatile at the sports he can play-by-play.
The fact that the A&M upset, Hail Mary tip vs. Georgia AND the Bama kick-6 happened in the same year for Auburn still leaves me flabbergasted, especially since they ended up losing the championship game in the final few seconds. If there was ever a more charmed team that failed to win a title, I don’t know of it.
just imagining what would’ve been had he called the pros like NFL, NBA or MLB. he could’ve been great calling games for guys like either MLB: rangers, astros, braves, rays or Marlons, for NFL: cowboys, texans, saints, falcons, jaguars, NBA: mavericks, rockets, hawks, heat, or the magic. that’s on his turf, but to see him call other games on the other side would have been crazy.
Out of all the announcers I've ever heard - he is the only one I think it would actually be hard to narrow it to just the Top 50. He has so many and was the voice of so many classic sporting events.

“Van Raaphorst looks back, nobody there, freelances into the end zone - picked off and the race is on. This is Chuck Cecil”. (Stadium Noise) Chuck Cecil, 106 yard interception return for a TD. Arizona Stadium, November 22nd, 1986. CBS, Verne Lundquist on the call.
You should have had something from the 1992 Winter Olympics, especially "Brenda and Daniel Kerrigan's daughter has seized the moment and made it her own!"
Verne always did it like the pro that he was. When he first started, there were a lot of very good play-by-play guys. As he bows out, he stands as one of the greatest ever.
@@fuckcensorship69 He stayed with football play-by-play for about 3 years too long. He was hard to listen to, in those last 3 years. Gary Danielson has even talked about Verne not being sharp in those years. Before that, for over 50 years, he was fantastic.
@@darrinlindsey I'd say 15 years too long. In the Tebow days he was already annoying AF..... it's funny Gary said that, bc he's the second worst of all time, but verne was his biggest fan
I just want to commend the awareness on no.11 at 8:24 to not touch the ball after the buzzer. It's instinct to help it in the basket but it would have been a dead ball, game over if he had done so
I still think Verne says… “In your wake…” ,, not “In your life… “ … which on the surface, doesn’t make sense … but actually fits Tiger’s monumental chip in moment
