After the install of the header, my car needed a bit of guidance to optimize power. VersaTuner helped me get it dialed in, and I haven't even customized it yet. Even without a header, I hear this is one of the best ways to improve the power delivery, but the header and tune combined made a world of a difference! It gets even better after datalogging and letting Bryan at Fab9 dial it in. I get some mild off throttle crackle and pops which is just what I want.

I wonder if anyone keeps the snap, crackle and pop?! Any way, I have an 2016 ND with a BBR 190 upgrade, (I live in the UK) headers, exhaust, cold air intake and remap. It brings the car to life, makes it so much more fun to drive. I would recommend this type of upgrade to anyone who wants a more engaging driving experience. Well worth the money!!! Thanks for the vid.

I can tell you what happens if you don't have the car on external power... after a certain amount of time the ECU turns off. Mine turned off in the middle of the tune and bricked the ECU. Big fun! Fortunately I was able to reflash it with the stock ECU firmware, and now everything is great. I did ECUTEK and wished I had done Versatuner. It's cheaper and looks more straightforward. My tuning experience sucked bad enough I scrapped the video I made on it. The car is definitely better but getting there was really frustrating.

@@FJB8646 Having the vehicle battery connected to mains power, by means of a battery charger/conditioner.

@@FJB8646 This is especially important on ND1 and ND2. ND has a small battery, and the ND2 stock firmware backup takes an hour or so to backup. Ensure that your laptop is on a charger and power saving features are disabled so it doesn't go into sleep mode while backing up the stock firmware or flashing the new tune. To reduce battery drain, keep the doors closed, radio, seat warmer, AC, etc. off.

Did I miss it? Other than the subjective feel and the popping of the exhaust, what was the torque and horsepower power increase? What difference is the power band like? Btw, love the black and white design of your Nc.

Yep, it can! Though I've heard that can damage weak or older cats. Or even new ones if you run it like this for a long time.

so i have an nc1 with goodwin 2.0 headers,super q exhaust, upgraded midpipe and a cosworth m62 supercharger. when i am doing tune do you have to tell what mods you have or will it recognize the mods ?

Unfortunately there’s not really a way for a tune (as far as I know) to know what mods are there. I can recommend VersaTuner and working with someone like Bryan from Fab9. He has a lot of experience tuning for various mods and builds.

First start with an AEM cold air. The induction noise is intoxicating letting the stock 2.0 sing up to red line :D

@@jaczek07 I was talking about the full AEM cold air tube. It brings the air entry point out of the engine bay and just below the front bumper cover. The stock intake systems usually have H-chambers and such in them to stop the induction noise from the factory.

I think - based on what you showed on the screen - you installed the agressive setup. Mild could be better. Interesting how easy it seems to be. Any dyno prove for the power increase?

I guess I was a bit misleading with that footage. I installed the aggressive (didn't film it), then mild, then aggressive, then basic performance, etc. Tried them all quite a bit before filming the review on the mild one. Mild was still drastically too much, but I have further instruction from VersaTuner to maybe tweak that, for another vid! No dyno results, but it's guaranteed power and feels incredible with header/tune combo. I can't speak for power with tune alone, but I would highly stress people just do both at once. Wish I had years ago.

I have an 08 NC1. I had Joe at Dynotronics do a “93 octane” remap on mine after install of Goodwin Catted header, Helmholtz midpipe and Super Q muffler… three years ago.. it was money well spent. I’d really like to go with a supercharger but I’m not trusting Kraftwerks.. rather have a FM or a Jackson but sadly they don’t exist anymore

Not really, the pops I have on up-shift were there with the header/muffler. But I'll be experimenting with adding a tiny bit of crackle/pop. Future video!

Probably not. From what I know the ECU in NB and NA nannot be flashed like in NC and ND so your only option is expensive aftermarket ECU. Thats why all more heavily modded NBs and NAs have aftermaket ECU.

ugh, so much to absorb and decide. I, unlike most- it seems on here, I do NOT have a unlimited budget for toys or upgrades at my late age of 70yrs old. I just got a 2012 Sport- straight stock. I just want a bit more sound and performance. I am thinking I need to replace the header, the intake(air filter housing) and maybe muffler. I dunno, so many decisions. I just want a bit more aggressive sound (nothing obnoxious). I use my Miata as a daily drive only in the summer (Michigan) and short trips. Not going to be racing or on any track. What is the least expensive thing I can do? (Hope its ok to ask all this here) What do you guys suggest I do first, second and third? Thanks so much!

I would say intake isn't worth it, and most agree. The factory air box is perfectly designed for flow. The tune, header, and muffler are a great combo. The muffler isn't necessary if all you care about is some performance, as that's where the header and tune come into play. Muffler is mostly just for sound. But even the header could improve sound. They're all subtle improvements but it's still an improvement! I would maybe look for a used header and then also source the tune from Fab9 and let Bryan know which header you have.

Update: My OBD2 port wiring was fucked, giving me a shitton of codes. Was not versatuners fault, just a wiring issue with my specific nc. i have the versatuner on my nc. it honestly has gave me sooo many issues. Every once in a while the versatuner tune will gove me 12 codes and a christmas tree and then after 45 min its back to normal. IDK its running ok now its just unpredictable. I will get an updated tune from fab9 soon enough

Does your miata have an lsd ? If not you should definitely swap the stock diff with an rx8 diff, it improves the car so much

After 5 months where do you stand with this tune? Any regrets? Anything you wish you wish you chose instead? Should I save for a custom tune instead? Gonna change my headers soon so I’d be happy to hear any new thoughts

No regrets! It’s been great, no issues. After getting it dialed in with Bryan at Fab9, maybe the best place to start is to get the tune kit and custom tune directly from him. Let him know I sent you!

yeah, that was a lot of cracking & popping. can versatuner run on a (strong) tablet? I don't have a laptop. yup. went to their website. tablest will work. pardon my fail. tho it seems to require a WINDOWS tablet, not Android. Reading Is Fundamental.

Never ever use a flash map. Get a custom tune from a pro using a dyno. Yes it costs more but if you can't afford £400 for a map you shouldn't be modifying in the first place
