Probably a smart move on not to take any of those men on board. Being in the ocean without the proper radios is questionable.

Captain you did the right thing. You did all you could do. You cant take the risk of letting them on your boat. These days it’s far too risky. This should be a lesson for everyone in this situation. You dont know for sure that they were even broke down. They Could have been trying to steal someones boat. You did the wise thing.

I agree with all the comments captain. They definitely weren’t prepared and you have to wonder why they didn’t want Coast Guard to come help him. Safety first on the water always

Heads up ! Lobster brought back have to be netted, can not be shot with polespear. Recent changes to US law. Big fines if brought back speared. Be safe.

I had an incident. 10miles off miami beach..were a boat with 2 guys flagged me down..they wanted me 2 jump on there boat n fix it..i stayed 50feet from them..The wind lifted the shirt of 1 of the guys n i saw a black semi auto piston..behind his back...Be careful out there folks

I broke down two seasons ago on the Hudson river when my outboard started smoking. I called Sea tow and they towed me back the 3 miles back to my launch site. They charged me $1300. My homeowners insurance actually paid for it or my car insurance one or the other. But now I am a Sea tow member for like 135 a year. I can’t imagine what Sea tow would charge for a non member 40 mile tow.

Captain you might not want to bring lobster that was caught with a spear into the US. It is forbidden to spear lobster in the US. If FWC boards you and finds a lobster that has spear damage you might get fined or worse. Check the regulations please.

Handled that correctly. You have to be cautious not get hi jacked out there, especially in that area. Not wanting a serious purpose built tow boat or coast guard to assist, but expect you to tow them that far with a single outboard? It may be just that they did not want to pay a tow charge, but it seemed weird.

Smart!... Never take a passenger from a stranded boat. Especially these days. You did correct thing. I would not tow either unless they were family or friend. 40 miles tow to Miami..... $$$$$$$$$$$$.

You did exactly the correct thing not boarding them in your vessel!!!! Also it was great that you kept your distance from them and didn't tie up to them!!!! "If" they were legit in distress it's on them for setting out in a boat without their proper equipment!!!! Had a similar situation myself years ago back in Culebra, PR assisting a boater!!!! Different outcome but non the less dealt with an irresponsible boater with a woman and small child on the boat!!!

I'm in Louisiana, we don't have many problems with boaters with questionable status. I can usually tell by their accent if somone is from Louisiana..lol Interesting delema being near the Caribbean and adjacent to other countries. If you were going to run out of gas or damage your vessel towing them in, that's a no go. No radio, sattelite communicantions, kicker motor? Hopefully, they learned their lesson.

The more I think about this video the more red flags 🚩 go up. Flag number 1 Seriously, they are stranded 40 miles out at sea and they seem so nonchalant about it. I’d be jumping up and down for joy that someone came along!! Flag mun 2. Who goes that far off shore and doesn’t have an operational radio? Flag num 3. And this is a big one! Only ONE person wants to ride with you to the mainland to get “help” while the others stay and perhaps drift off to god knows where. Pardon the pun but it all smells pretty fishy to me Captain.

You did the right thing capin..you did your part contacting the CC for all you know that could have been a set up to rob you..great call on that if vessel was sinking thats a different they didn't ask for or water nothing..that didn't seem right to me seemed FISHY get it fishy...but great job capin love ya brother!!!

I would have done the same thing - Not prepared with a piece of crap boat crossing to or back from the Bahamas. Something fishy about that setup anyhow - probably from Cuba and you don`t need that hassle. Nothing against Cubans but this administration wants no future Republicans coming to this country .

Basically there were 4 idiots on a boat with no safety devices. I have 2 radios on my boat and a PLB . Thats just basic common sense. Very smart move not to get to close to them and not let them board your vessel . There are pirates out there believe it or not.

They were drifting in the Atlantic current I wouldn't have felt comfortable leaving them without a radio I would not have let them board my boat but I would have stayed with them due to the fact you were the only one with a radio

Friend of mine blew one motor going out. It cost him 800.00 to be towed 2 miles back to the ramp. The next day he got a sea tow membership. The next year he was 10 miles off shore and both motors stopped working. Cost him no t hing to be towed back. I would have done the same, not allow them to board my boat. Except would have stayed near by till coast guard or towing company showed up.

Super risky...those folks were not cool and most likely illegals looking for a trip to the US or pirates looking for another vessel to take. Good call to contact USCG and not take the risk.

Very good call. There is "street smart" and "sea smart". I just got a lesson in the latter.

Former towboat US capt here - prices for tows START at $360/hr and we start billing the moment the boat leaves the dock, and we don't stop billing until we get back to OUR dock. His tow would easily break $3000.

Vhf radios rule of thumb is 1 mile per watt of radio strength. 25 watt radio 25 mile range line of sight. Your wife is a keeper. What is the dip you put on your toast bread?

Anyone ………….anyone that goes off shore, especially if you can afford a boat anywhere close to that one, and doesn’t have an EPIRB in really not operating with a full deck. They use to cost thousands, ( i still had one), but now 2-3 hundred dollars will get you one. Registration (mandatory) is free! You MUST have an EPIRB. Somewhere between pure ignorance and just crazy not to. You were right not to try to tow them. My concern is that they are well into the Gulf stream current and it will be hours before someone gets to them. A lot of set and drift there. Many miles in that time. I know that especially the coast guard are pretty good an calculating there set and drift but still a gamble in finding them. As they don’t oven have a vhf radio. That’s just doubly crazy. You did what you could. A good buddy of mine is a Boat US captain and goes over to the Bahamas all the time to rescue boats.
