Veszprém 2023 - capital of culture or construction site? 🇭🇺

I visited Veszprém, a lovely Hungarian city, north of Lake Balaton early 2023, also because it is this year's European Capitals of Culture. What I found was more or less a construction site with the largest part of the historical center unaccessible. That was quite disappointing but forced me to explore some parts of the town I have not been to before.
I highly recommend spending a day or at least a few hours in Vesprém when you are in the region. But considering the state of the construction sites, you should not do this before March 2023.

Veszprém holds the ECoC title jointly with the Bakony-Balaton region. Do I see footage of the 116 joined municipalities here?

On my channel, you mean? Yes, I have uploaded videos from Balatonfüred, Tihany and many other places near the northern shore of Lake Balaton. However mostly not related to the CoC event.

Looks like the castle district is accessible again since the opening event last Saturday, which might have been quite spectacular. Not sure though if the construction work is completely finished. But still I think, when people read that a town is cultural capital, most of them would expect everything to be ready from January 1st. I know that lots of people visited Veszprém around the same time as myself, during the prolonged winter holidays. Many of them were quite disappointed.

Will travel to Veszprém next weekend 25th + 26th March. City is still a construction site. No single church or cathedral is open! Almost all museums closed - except one of the modern art museums. The only cultural capital event is taking place 30 km away (according to tourist information). #Veszprém disappointing

This is sad. Even I expected everything to be fine by mid March. Anyway, even under these circumstances, it should be worthwhile traveling to Veszprém. I highly recommend to also check out the neighboring towns of Balatonfüred and Tihany. Easiest way to get there is by car, but public transportation is decent and really cheap. It will get you to these places within less than an hour from Veszprém.
