It is early June and I return to Veszprém, Hungary, the European Capital of Culture 2023 to find out if it is still the construction site I found earlier this year. Watch my video if you want to find out before visiting this town.
Some parts of the video might look like I am bashing the organizers of the event, the city of Veszprém or even Hungary for the - let's say suboptimal - state of the project. But this is not my point. I try to clarify this at the end of the video.

I was there a week ago. It is "too much" at this level, I prefer the old Hungary with a bit worn walls which remain constantly a bit in need of renovation. Do you have an idea of what they are building there ? (1:00)

Yes, I also think it is too much. On the other hand it's a shame they could not afford to restore the original inside painting of the church. What you see at 1:00 is not really a scaffolding but some kind of elevator with a ramp. They use it to transport construction stuff up to the castle.

@@frankexplores4794 Thank you for the info, I was certain this was the construction of a funicular, like the one which brings you to the Buda castle.

@@AmnesiaGm1 That would be crazy! The ground station is neither in a place where tourists go nor has it good traffic connection. But your remark made me unsertain, so I checked and found that the thing is called the Veszprémi Várlift and is actually used during construction only.

How much is distance from Budapest to veszprem on train???
@frankexplores4794
@frankexplores4794 Год назад
There is a good direct train connection. The train will take little more than an hour. However the railway station is far outside the city, so you need to add a few minutes for a bus ride, plus waiting time.

You can't see the beauty of Veszprem, because you don't want to see it. Why did you go there if you are only judging of that beautiful town?

I definitely see Veszprém's beauty and I mention it multiple times. The only thing I criticize are some of the activities around the Culture Capital event. If you watch the complete video, you should understand why I visit this town to which I have a special relationship

A Hungarian here. It seems to me that you, Western people are unhappy with the development of Hungary or something... The construction is inconvenient for you? Well, sorry if we don't want to stick to the "third world country vibe", and actually want to have pretty places. After all Hungary went through, I think we deserve it. Not for others, especially not for Westerners. But for ourselves. You can find other slum-like places in Europe to get your "authentic" feeling or whatever.

I don't know what made you write this comment which is completely unrelated to my video and has nothing to do with what I think and feel about Hungary. The fact that I was born in Germany does not imply that I am just one of these "Westerners". I don't identify at all with German politics and mainstream opinions since many years and it's getting worse. (I also don't identify with Orbán, to be honest.) The things I criticize in the video are not specific to Hungary. They happen everywhere. I explicitly mention this at the end of the video.

@@frankexplores4794 Sure, man. Then agreeing with an other commenter about the constructions being "too much" is just an illusion and I shouldn't believe my eyes and be able to read between the lines, I guess. And the "The things I criticize in the video are not specific to Hungary." wasn't clear at all. I am half German, but I would never give up Hungary, no matter how rich Germany is, they are so spineless, it makes me sick. I will always be a Hungarian. Hungarians just cannot take a break it seems, but they try so hard to develop and stay on the road they chose.

@@The_Catnip I say some important things at the end of the video where unfortunately nobody is watching anymore. And yes, I agree that Germany as a country is spineless. I feel less and less at home here and have mostly lost trust in the institutions of the country where I grew up. But that does not mean that the majority of people living in Germany is spineless as well.

Az nem "take a break" angolul (az jelenti ...szünetet stb). A 'get a break' helyes. Mindenesetre, viva a magyarok :)
