Look at speed range Motor has 16000 Volt high spike wire and is rated for speed range you need Motors usually have cooling fan on shaft of motor - Cooling fan will make it go slower - If you have an inexpensive motor, may have limited chance to reduce speed 2 reasons for failure - insulation or bearing fails - heat can cause both How to control the drive? - Keypads - advanced, simple - to control drive remotely - dry contact - analog speed reference 4-20 ma signal - or other Enclosure can be mounted on wall want to keep it cool and clean best to mount inside an enclosure positive pressure ventilated system with filters change filters periodically - last 2-4 times longer than putting on wall If drive is outside - need special outdoor enclosure Filters Output - VFD - 100 ft of drive - nothing needed Many motors or more than 100 feet away you need a filter Cheapest filter - load reactor DVDT Filter take the spikes and get rid of the spikes Fixes motor insulation Expensive motor Sine Wave Filter Convert to a sine wave - expensive Input Harmonics IEEE519 - standard that directs the current distortion must be within certain limits depending on strength of utility drive can pollute the power quality Custom Enclosures

Could I use a sine wave filter on the output and use a standard non inverter rated motor on said VFD?

Is there anything I can do to learn the parameters of a motor that is missing it's nameplate

If you can reduce the pulse frequency, you can reduce the level of voltage spikes to the motor so you may be able to use a regular 3 phase motor if you don't mind the whining noise.

Why can't the motor be single phase?.I've already seen some VFD's that were rated for single phase.

I am thinking of changing my machine tool to a VFD setup. But, I don't want the motor noise that I hear. the high pitch ringing is just too much to deal with. is there a way around this?
