Love how open these guys are to talking about missteps and things they missed until it was too late. That kind of insight makes me appreciate the artistry and final product even more.
@@laurentderrien I mean there was very little story to massacre anyway. No one really cares anyway, either the show is good or it's not. It's really that simple.
I think David Goyer wanted on this show so he could actually react to his worst work. Not often you hear these professionals be so critical of their own creations.
His critical attitude shows how much he cares about the show. And I don't think he's really blaming anyone other than probably Apple for not giving enough time/budget to make the show as perfect as he'd like. Which I agree with. There's a reason why Stranger Things is so successful. The team is given enough budget and time with each season to make it spectacular. How many shows take 3-4 years between each season? None, yet Stranger Things has proven that fans are willing to wait if their patience is paid off.
God apple has failed miserably with their promotion of Foundation. I had never even heard of it but now I HAVE to watch it based on how awesome those clips looked.
man what a earth-shattering, mind-breaking idea! Who could have ever thought about doing a video like this in a million years? no, 10 million years? You, my liege, are the smartest erson that has ever graced existence.
That would be great! I can't quite put my finger on why the newest one looks worse in so many scenes. Don't get me wrong, the hero shots were badass and super fun. The rest just looked a little meh
Damn it seemed like these guys had so much fun here, like they really wanted to come along and chat with you about their work. really fun episode, amazing to see people so passionate and animated with you
We need more Foundation VFX artist react, I've gotten into the series right after I watched this video! Just awesome to hear the artists talking about their crafts!
The years of work they've put in to the industry. They deserve this exposure. Knowing the people they are fans of... are fans of them. It has to be so cool. Really shows how small the world is.
I'd love to know of a sequence that artists have thought of but technology wasn't able to accomplish, and how they had to reimagine it if it was feasible.
Avatar was kicking around Cameron's head for years and then once CG tech caught up to his vision he was able to execute it. These days, we can do pretty much anything given the time and money. The real challenge is asking yourself if what you are doing serves the story and is worth the effort. Otherwise you are just VFX Free Birding.
I swear Niko has the most satisfying job, look at his face! Almost always has that super happy Santa Claus face from those Christmas-time Coke cans. Also sweet episode, didn't know season 2 was out.
Would love to hear you asking guests what developments in visual effects they want to see in the future. It could be interesting to see what different artists feel would push the envelope.
@@winged777 How is it "woke"? Lmao, you should've just said what you really wanted to say: _"If it only hadn't black people and strong female characters"._
@@mrcroob8563 nah the story of the emperors is the best part of the show, and it was completely manufactured. the things they changed from the adapted story that is kinda weird.
This show is so great! I love seeing the names and faces behind some of the best VFX work ever done. Actors and directors get all the limelight but these are the people that actually make the magic happen.
Love how much you guys have cemented yourselves as a part of the industry with this show. That these people at the top of their game are seeking you out to come and talk about their work.
I was so excited to see Foundation come back for season 2. The concepts of the book are so massive, I was blown away that you guys captured that feeling in the show. I think it's one of the best epic tales done on TV ever. Your commitment to detail and willingness to go all out is so present in your work and I am so happy right now.
@@HAL_NOVEMILA: It isn't ultimately that different at all; keep in mind that the first book, _Foundation_ itself, is short and purposefully fragmented to give the impression of grand scales of time; the series isn't so much changing the story (although it does that too) as it's filling in blanks to expand upon it, and it's doing a great job at that.
@@yeyuan6273: Yeah, to be frank it doesn't even seem to me like most people complaining have even read the book(s) themselves, but are just repeating what others have told them.
Much respect to you guys. As soon as I saw that you had two guys who made a show for Apple TV on, my first thought was "Great, this is just going to be a commercial for Foundation." And then almost immediately your guests start talking about how much the shot their reacting to annoys them. And the real issues of filmmaking. This episode was a fun watch.
You guys should take a look at the opening credits of Vertigo. It's supposedly the first use of CGI with a live-action film. It's stunning to see knowing that it's from 1958.
Good suggestion. Given there was no CGI back then, the swirls are nicely done. Most likely with a function generator on a screen, and then tinted. Or drawn out to avoid any flicker of the screen. Hmm 🤔
SUGGESTION: A movie you don't expect to have visual effects: Notting Hill. Check out 1 h 28 minutes into that movie! It's a sequence where the seasons change within a few seconds.
I just looked up the scene. It’s good storytelling, but no special effects going on, just shot on a very long stage/lot, with the set partitioned in different versions, and he just walks through it. Nicely choreographed, but , I mean, his suit even stays the same. More symbolic than visual, really.
@@cineturonIf memory serves me well, it was done in two shots, so there are minimal visual effects in the middle to join the two. But other than that, it's indeed all choreography
I think it is fascinating hearing which shots the creators wish the could "fix." I think have a regular question to ask them "Which shot do you wish you could go back & adjust the most." You do ask this essentially some times & they spoke about it alot in this one. I think just keep it up. Love all your work & vibes btw. Cheers
I'm so happy you guys are doing so well and are so influential. It's like seeing an actor you like early in their career and then you feel like you share a part of their success as they thrive. An odd human reaction but real nonetheless. (Wow. I thought nonetheless might be one word... and to my shock... it is!)
One detail that I'm surprised you didn't mention on the canoe shot. The canoe is now in the water, but the water ripples beneath it are still displaced and reflecting light as normal. Even a masked filter to removed most of the reflections would've looked better. Nit-pick I know, but this is the show for it. Love the show.
What a fascinating episode, thank you. There really is an equally charismatic equivalent of Stanley Tucci in the visual effects industry! Great chemistry! Much love
I almost feel like I personally know you guys. Having been following you guys for so long, it’s like watching friends become famous filmmakers in real time. Awesome stuff man, you guys are amazing. Keep it up!!!!
It has to be such a cool feeling to know that people you look up to and that are considered big names in the industry, away they're "big fans" of your work. Bravo corridor crew, doing big things! 🎉
Would be cool to see you guys cover the Dinotopia miniseries from 2002. Most importantly, comparing the pterodactyl riding sequence to Avatar’s first flight scene with the banshees.
I liked the popup kayak too because the unfolding effect was just quick enough for the eye to catch that the brain didn't question what happened and also because it was cool future tech that is indistinguishable from magic, like most of the show's technology, so I didn't even question the paddles or the frame materializing because I was already sold.
I think it'd be cool especially when you have 2 effects guests to have them show their first industry shots in their career and their most recent and explain how they feel they've grown
The thing is that in VFX you have a whole team behind you, so everyone's early work still looks amazing. When you are a Junior you have a bunch of seniors holding your hand and walking you through all your shots. Chris was one of my first VFX supes, and he was amazing to work with. We worked on the Chariot race for the Ben Hur remake. The quality of the shots are top notch, even though it was some of the first work I have ever done.
A truly impressive get for guests. Well of course, ALL of the special guests have been suitably special. The differences between how you see the scenes and the people who make them are interesting because it shows that even sometimes when they think they fail, they still kinda win just on the merit that the show even gets made and people are suspending their disbelief. And yeah, long time fan here, still hoping one day we'll see _Tether_ happen.
11:13 Honestly, I didn’t really notice the pillars moving and think something was off. The location makes the pillars looks like old distressed dock or building supports. I could easily imagine that over time, the foundations could be loose. Loved this episode. Everyone is so humble and ok with calling out the hiccups and visually off moments. Makes me appreciate their work even more.
Great 16-minute advertisement for the TV show Foundation. Only halfway kidding, you still managed to break down interesting FX, from the actual show runners! I would have loved to watch the show runners react to stuff they didn’t work on too (then it would have felt less like a commercial). I love this channel, and always watch the extended versions on the website/app. Thanks for another great “React” video!
@@seanbirch Well, yes... You're right. I get it. That's how anyone would evolve in their respective feilds. However, I just wanted to point out that what they would count as "fails", I might personally consider to be a great accomplishment, with me being a beginner. It's humbling, as well as inspiring to see someone that's more than proficient at their craft have such self reflection, despite years of amazing work. I hope we'll all be blessed with such introspective wisdom one day.
I think Ami Yamato would make a good guest for this show; she seems to know a lot about VFX, you know, with the way she edits herself into movie scenes and stuff. You guys should invite her; she said she'd be down for it!
For David… what the was the conversation like with Zack Snyder when discussing Superman’s flight. How did you guys execute the flight sequences so flawlessly?
Love how this show has evolved from just VFX to more of an industry sharing session where how they get around budgets and limitations, money shots etc.
I just finished season 1 and as a space lover that hasn't had the best shows or movies that are outside of star wars or star trek, the Foundation is my newest obsession. Not only is it well done story wise giving us nice juicy futuristic tech and planets and time travel relative to travel across space and space travel in general utilizing black hole essence, but also just visually it is amazingly done. For the size budget that it is it looks so wonderful. This show is a huge reason why I am sticking on to apple tv right now.
i just found out about this show yesterday and I was hooked. Did not even realize I watched 5 episodes of the first season. Its mesmerizing. The Expanse is the best science fiction show I have ever seen but this has the potential to be just as good if not better.
Yeah im currently watching season 1 of the expanse and im loving it but foundation is just on another level in terms of production design... some shots in the expanse really looked rough. However i think the CGI will improve over time
It's more inspired by the books rather than an adaptation of them, which is pretty disappointing. The best part in s01 was the subplot they made up from scratch.
All those movies they listed and you can instantly see their style, the way foundation looks I'm a sucker for that kind of dystopian look and the foundation is just perfect in that regard
i'd love to hear more about what movies or scenes influenced those in the field to initially take an interest in animation. I'd also like to know what specific scenes in other shows and movies inspired or influenced creative moments in your guest's history. like was there a scene they took slight influence from when making the space elevator fall? was it a combination of scenes? stuff like that.
It was actually a game for me. Metal Gear Solid. That level of storytelling sparked something... I was like "I want to make something like this." As for reference for Foundation, we channeled the OG creators and artists, like Doug Trumbull, Mike Whelan and John Berkey. We wanted to pay homage to these artists, while creating something new.
Alot of things are wrong with foundation. But the visuals are probably the best ive seen in a TV show. I watched the sequence of the jumpship crashing and exploding so many times!
Foundation is a great show. The vfx are amazing AND the audio is outstanding. If you watch with a true surround setup (not a soundbar or pseudo-surround), you'll know what I'm talking about. True artists (all around) working on that show!
Finishing the first episode of the second season, one of my first thoughts was- I can't wait till they do a whole episode on Foundation on VFX Artist reacts, because the quality of this show is chefs kiss* amazing. Avatar is the only Ip that comes to mind now a days that compares to the cgi realest acquired in this show. The immersive qualities though remind me of the go blade runner... (written before watching this ep of VFX Aritist...)
I'm so impressed with Apple for both this and Silo. The commonality between the two, after watching this, is clear - great story and acting, GREAT production design, and letting the VFX arise from that.
Regarding the diagonal decapitation, Blade 2 does the exact same shot with pretty much the same detail, including showing a different angle to include exposed brain tissueway back in 2002, and the eye blinks in that one. I'm curious if Foundation's team looked at that at all in building this one.
I remember an episode of that 80s cartoon Centurions where a space elevator was gonna fall down on the earth. That scene in Foundation immediately made me think of that lol
I "starred" in a Netflix show a couple years ago. It was a docuseries, so I didn't have to do a performance. I just sat in a big comfy chair on the set and talked about my childhood and the situation I was in at that time. It was an awesome set that took a ton of effort and expertise to create, the camera operators and the lighting crew were perfectly on point and the sound guys were so prepared and meticulous that it all made me realize that my audio/video equipment at home (that I was pretty proud of) was the equivalent of Fisher Price kids toys in comparison. The makeup room looked like a damn store in there, with hundreds of different shades of the same thing to mix and match so they could make any color or shade of any type of makeup they require.. The whole production was like a very well engineered machine and every part of it was working together seamlessly. But then it came time to start shooting, and I felt like a gigantic douche when I was brought to the set and the Director/Showrunner introduced me as "The Talent".. That was a moment of embarrassment I'll never forget. I know that's the technical term and blah blah.. But any one of those people on set had more talent in their pinky fingers than I have in my whole body, and it just felt so disrespectful to the ACTUAL talents on display by the crew.. I think the crew should be called "the talent" and the actors can take any other pretentious title they want. Actors that show actual, tangible talent are pretty far between in mainstream cinema these days anyway (imo).. ok, rant over. TLDR: Calling the actors on a film set "The Talent" feels like calling Milli Vanilli good musicians. The real talent was the musicians behind the curtain, not the guys hopping around on the stage.
6:53 the way they talk about realistic things in shows made me look closer and you can clearly see how static the boats are. Almost if they are on the solid ground and the water is just cm deep. I would never notice something like that in a show.😂 these videos are awesome
You recently asked about fire in movies or tv shows that you should look into. I've started watching Supernatural from the beginning with my mom. I've been really surprised as how well some of the early visual effects still look. I recommend you give the pilot episode a watch and see if the fire stunt that kicks off the entire series has some elements that you can discuss on an episode. Thank you for reading.
Ugh, I wish there wasn't all these streaming platforms! I'd love to watch this show, but can't afford all the platforms like Apple tv and Max, etc! Thanks for showing all this great footage and having the people on to talk about it!
Since you asked, if you ever get a showrunner or writer again on a Vfx heavy project like this, I would ask how they consider vfx during the writing process. Like how does budgeting for vfx or planning around current technology effect the process early on?
I'd love to see both an episode with some videogame vfx and mo-cap reactions, and an animators react with more of a focus on the lighting process :) Love your work guys
In The Office season 3, "Business School," they use a CG flying bat that looks so good! Would love to see a breakdown on that. I thought it was a practical effect at first.
Really appreciated the "better help" segment. As a man, I've learned to tell my brothers I love them. Men need to open themselves up and tell their friends how they feel.
