My first serious repair attempt, burn in cart shows either black screen or garbled graphics. Swapped ppu1 and ppu2, still the same. Noticed the corrosion on wram pin 2 and 3, patched and working Thank you for the video! Mana music too 😊

That’s incredible, this is a perfect example on why it’s hard to diagnose a problem over a comment, I would’ve just told you it’s most likely a bad cpu. A visual look at the board is the best way to diagnose problems. Congrats on the repair.

Well you could use a pair of tweezers to hold your magnawire in place while soldering. Your iron tip could also be a bit finer/smaller in order to avoid heat-stressing the solder pads/traces and allow more precise work. Don't get me wrong, when a reflow has to be be done, the large tip you're using is perfect. But for this kind of jobs, finer is better. You could also tin the exposed copper after using the fiber glass pen to protect it from oxydation and then remove the excess with solder braid. This would also look very neat.

Hell yeah, brother! When working with wire that size, I find it helps a lot to use a good pair of tweezers at the end you're soldering to in order to keep the wire steady. God bless you for doing that without a microscope. My blind ass wouldn't have been able to do it.

How many times have you dealt with an APU failure? I was testing a board, and got APU BB failure on my test cart. I don’t have another removable sound board to swap out. It would boot, no sound, and some glitchy graphics. Thoughts? I can probably stumble across another SHVC SOUND unit. But not sure if it’s possible something else caused it to fail. I have another board that does have the little female port that the sound board goes in. I could swap those out.

Do you know if an older, removable 62 pin connector can be soldered to a newer 1 chip motherboard? I have a 1 chip 02 with bent pins that won't go past game intros and an extra older, removable type pin connector.
@inputfunny
@inputfunny 3 года назад
Also does the removable pin connector need to be installed a certain way? The two pieces look the same on both sides.
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer 3 года назад
Great question, yes you can desolder the newer pin connector and install an original removable one. The connector has no position you can insert it in anyway. This is often a good thing to do because it allows you to replace the pin connector or even clean it better in the future.
@inputfunny
@inputfunny 3 года назад
@@PunkNDisorderlyGamer Thanks. I wanted to make sure since I read someone write that putting in the connector the wrong way can cause weird things to happen in games or something along those lines. I'm guessing they didn't know what they were talking about.
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer 3 года назад
@@inputfunny yes that’s a common misconception you can try it for yourself it’s not true, a clean cart connector can be placed in any way. I’ve heard many rumors some believe the RF shield on the bottom and top somehow grounds the snes and allows it to work, fact is the RF shields are for FCC compliance, some regulations, or even to clean up the RF signal a bit, you can discard them and the snes will work just fine.
@inputfunny

Hey PunkNDisorderlyGamer, I was wondering if you could help me I have 2 SNES consoles acting up in similar ways (SHVC-CPU-01 and SNS-CPU-GPM-01) Cleaning or Capacitor replacement does not solve it. I was just wondering if you had any idea off hand of which chip might need swapping. The issue is that they won't go past the intro screen for example Aladdin says Capcom (has sound) and shows a bit of the intro video and then nothing after that just black or eventually a glitched out screen with white checkered pattern. And also are the main chips on SHVC-CPU-01 and SNS-CPU-GPM-01 interchangeable?
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer 3 года назад
Both of those are probably dead CPUs. The main chips are interchangeable, keep in mind PPU1 and PPU2s aren’t the same chip, you cannot replace a PPU1 with a PPU2.
@mattb8124
@mattb8124 3 года назад
@@PunkNDisorderlyGamer thanks for your reply. i finally got my burn-in test rom to work on my rom cart. i'm certain my 2 SHVC-CPU-01 boards are cpu issues based on the symptoms the test cart won't run on those. I got the test cart results on the SNS-CPU-GPM-01 and it says APU BB Fail, this board doesn't have a APU chip so is it the DSP or SMP chip what do you think?
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer 3 года назад
@@mattb8124 yup but those chips I usually remove with chipquik because the heat usually kills those from my experience. Try to run some games on the bad APU board and see if you get a Nintendo title screen, games like super street fighter or super Mario kart will show a Nintendo logo or licensed by Nintendo and lock up. What you can do if you’re planing on trying to get one console to work you could remove the CPU chip from the bad APU and put it on one of the other boards with bad CPUs. Keep in mind it’s a pretty difficult job if you haven’t done it before.

@@LaCuevadelElfo if it turns on try cleaning the game and trying again. It shouldn’t have fried anything. Also, I’m not quite sure why someone would want to bypass the voltage regulator and a lot of the protection components of the SNES. Before the output of the regulator you’ve got a diode, fuse, common mode choke, and a varistor. Edit: also I just noticed he bridged the output and input pins on the voltage regulator so plugging in a normal adaptor will be sending 9-12 volts to the output pin of the regulator instead of 5v. Unless I’m missing something.

@@StephenMooreOfficial It wont hurt the components no, maybe it will take the writings off if you are not careful but the real danger is that it can remove the mask. If you put too much for too long and scrub too hard you run the risk of exposing your traces. Realistically speaking the only thing that risk ruining the components when you open it up for cleaning is dropping something on the board. Heat can also damage components but its not really an issue if youre just cleaning.
