I’m late to the party, Graham. Glad to see you have made good progress again. Electronic ignition is a great invention but at this stage with a totally rebuilt engine, keeping it simple with a traditional distributor and points, will aid diagnostics if she won’t fire up. I’m pleased to hear the kit is coming and I’m sure you will have somewhere safe to put it. See you next time, for another instalment in the Gentry build. Best, Jason.

Graham, It would be so easy for you to enjoy your hobby and not bother to take us along with you. I for one am glad you wish to share your interest and look forward to watching more of your progress. Thanks again. Stephen.

That’s such a nice thing to say Stephen, thank you sir. Yes it would be a lot easier but I do enjoy it so it’s not too much of an added hassle, I like the interaction I have with you guys too, the little words of wisdom coming back are often a great help to me too. Hopefully there will be another video up tomorrow (Wednesday), I can’t do too much today on it as I have other jobs to do but hopefully I will be back on it again tomorrow afternoon. Cheers for now mate. ………….Graham

Graham, going back when I used to work in a garage, in the 60s/70s when replacing the head gasket. What we put on the gasket depended on the type of gasket. Early on we had to put a gasket sealer on (Black Bostic). Later the gaskets would be self-sealing, these gaskets had a sealing compound that would melt as the engine warmed up, the gasket kit would have instructions telling you not to use any kind of sealer. A third type was a flat metal gasket that we would put grease on just to keep it in place if the head had bolts and not studs. Hope this helps. Enjoying the videos.

Hi Jack and thanks for the comment, as I said in the video, I would research first before going ahead bolting the head down which is what I’ve done. I have a Payden AK260 head gasket which is the sort that ‘melts’ the sealing compound built into the head gasket and so is used dry, retorting the head after a while is advised but I would do that anyway. So exactly as you said sir so thank you for that and so pleased that you are enjoying the videos. Hopefully some more this week once I get some more work done. Cheers for now mate. …………. Graham

Looking like a new engine already Graham, can't wait for the first start-up. I think your vids are quite unique on YT in terms of level of of detail, your approach as a guy working in his garage etc, really enjoyable to watch, thanks cheers Paul

@mygentrybuild1974 2 года назад
Well thank you Paul, that’s a really nice comment to make and I do try to make my videos as just a ‘bloke in a garage’ type video because that’s actually all I am. I’m not a professional video maker nor a professional car mechanic but I try to do it so that most people either understand what I’m doing or just get a little bit pleasure from just watching. I know I screw up sometimes, I forget to show things sometimes but I have to remember that this is not a ‘how to’ video to replace a manual - just me trying my best to get this thing built but make it interesting along the way if I can. 👍🏻👍🏻 Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

Thanks so much Graham for another great video. Your microphone is so sensitive that when the first car went by in your street ,which we know is busy ,it sounded like you were living beside the Heathrow runway! Followed by birds chirping and Doves cooing.Loving the series.

Hi Mark and I know what you mean about the noise of everything outside, the thing is that I hardly notice it as it’s not really that loud but you’re right, the mic amplifies it so much. Anyway, you at least get the idea of what I’m trying to do. 😉. Cheers for now mate. …………. Graham

G'Day Graham, you raised a question on to use or not to use sealant on the head gasket - theoretically if both head and block surfaces have been machine there should be no need! However - now comes the fun bits if the head gasket you are using is copper just make sure it is annealed before using. - if head gasket is of 'Felpro' construction, which is like a black card construction with blue or red impregnated silicon around all the holes (shall we say) and steel bands around the piston jackets then NEVER use any sealants on it. - if head gasket is of the twin steel shim style (forget correct name) then I would advise using a spray type sealant on both sides of the gasket. Here in Australia we use a product called "hylomar" it is a blue spray which is very tacky and works extremely well. As you can see depending on the gasket material you have will determine if you need sealant or not as you can destroy the properties of the gasket sealing correctly (which means you will have to do it all over again, and that is Not an option that you really want) Hope this little bit of info helps you and any others that are following this rebuild 😊. Cheers from down under. Wally
@mygentrybuild1974
@mygentrybuild1974 2 года назад
Hi Wally and thank you for taking the time and trouble to comment on the head gasket question I asked. I have a Paydon AK260 which is made from of the Felpro style construction and with my research then it’s clear that I should not use a sealer of any kind as it has its own internal sealer as you know. So that’s cleared that up and it’s nice to know that I shall be using a very good head gasket and comes highly recommended. I will recheck the torque settings as it beds down, they are bound to need redoing after a while. Thanks for all you help Wally, it’s greatly appreciated sir. Cheers for now mate. ………….Graham

Hi Graham. Thanks for bringing us up to steam on your missing footage. I thoroughly enjoyed my lesson today, lol. Forgive my ignorance, but I don’t understand the 2 core plugs. To me, a naive observer, you plugged up 2 holes in the block face. Maybe A short explanation for me if possible. If it’s not possible, that’s okay too. That news at the end about the kit arriving in a fortnight is great. I look forward to tomorrow’s lesson. See ya then. Take care.

Hi Norman, I will explain about the core plugs in tomorrows video, I apologise for not explaining it before and this pin points the danger of me just assuming that people know what I’m talking about which of course I shouldn’t - but I will explain them tomorrow. Yes, I’m so happy to now have a date for delivery, that means I can then move forward after delivery as I’m fast running out of other jobs to do on the Gentry. Exciting times ahead! Cheers for now mate. …………. Graham

Hi Les and thank you for the comment, I can’t work in any other way but methodical to be honest, I just can’t work in a mess but that’s just me, it drives some people nuts if they are working along side me! 😂😂 But it helps me in my planning of working through the day and helps stop me making mistakes but even that’s not full proof - I still make mistakes but I put that down to an age thing! 😂. Cheers for now mate and hope that you continue to enjoy the build as much as I do. 👍🏻 ………….Graham

Graham, thanks for mentioning the thrust washers. Also, the top bolt of the rear seal should have a copper washer behind the head, otherwise oil can leak out at that point.

Hi David and yes, I’ve put a brand new copper washer on that upper bolt so no worries there - I guess I should have mentioned that when bolting it up. Cheers for now mate. ………..Graham

Hi Jason and thanks for the comment and exactly my thoughts too as regards the ignition, I will convert over to electronic ignition once I’ve got it started up and running, I just prefer working with the old points system - I can see what I’m doing with those. Yes the kit will live either directly on the chassis where it belongs or to one side and hopefully another instalment in a day or two. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham
