RIP Winkle. Died yesterday aged 97. The video tells it all in his own words. Just a small post script. Having rewatched this ( I saw it when it was first broadcast on the BBC ). I find it to be an incredible piece of documentary. The man (and only him) in his own words.

Remarkable man is no exaggeration he was also very articulate in speech and writing. Fluent German speaker and author of numerous articles and books. This was all on top of his achievements as a pilot and officer. Thank you for making this film available.

The Captain of HMS Audicity mentioned by Winkle was Cdr. Douglas William Mackendrick. The Second MAC ship the Empire Mackendrick was named after him.

Back in the late seventies I spoke with a former FAA pilot, asking about the Vampire. He replied that with the engine at the centre of gravity, stall recovery was effectively nil. You died if you stalled it. Also,no ejection seat. The movable portion of the canopy was narrower that your shoulders,so getting out was unlikely. And most often, those who did get that far usually struck the tail, fatally. He loved the Rolls engined Phantoms, but his favorite was the English Electric Lightning. The engineering changes in one man's career. Astonishing. Safety and recovery systems alone are amazing changes.

I knew a man in the mid '80s name of 'Nobby' Hall. Ex-RAF, he had learned to fly in the late '20s and his first operational tour was on Wapitis. When he stopped flying he had flown 150 different aircraft types (including German types captured during WW2). He had flown post war jets and at the end of his career flew the lightning prototype. So from an aircraft which cruised at 100 knots to one which was capable of Mach 2. Much like Eric, he had seen the most amazing changes during his flying career.

An amazing man. I doubt any pilot will ever have such a large range of experiences again in one lifetime. Pilots will be replaced with drones.
