I sincerely love your videos, Rinry. You look at all the things that gamers often think about, but you never see any videos on the subject. Things such as box art oddities, the strength and resilience of NES cartridges, your SMS vs. NES videos... Such great stuff! Love it!
I remember when I was a kid that I learned at a young age to not trust the box art when choosing a game. So the only thing I had to go on (any 90s kid will know what I mean here) was the back of the box. Those couple of pictures of the actual game itself on the back was the most decisive factor. Now I know box art still played a factor cause I would see the front first and think "Oooo I will check this out then immediately look at the back. I am sure all of us kids had similar childhoods. Those special 2 days during the weekend where mom let you rent a game. I remember a few times being tricked by both box art and the back of the box as well. Some games that still haunt me. I am 26 and I still feel rage over the lost weekends when renting Mario is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, a game meant for the power glove which I didn't own or know about at the time, and... and... superman 64. I lost 2 weekends to that game. The first time I was fooled by the front and back of the box. I remember seeing the front with superman in his prime, revealing his S logo looking like he was ready to kick ass. I immediately looked at the back which featured photos of superman using all of his cool superpowers. The game described all the badass shit you could do in the game. Let me say this, it said jack shit about the only thing you do get to do in that game which is fly through fucking rings. I never got past the first stage. It haunted me though because I hoped deep down that if I could just get past that stage and make it through the glitch filled area of rings that some how the rest of the game would be good like the back of the box showed. Then one weekend my brother went without me to pick a game. When he came back with that ring filled piece of shit I almost kicked the crap out of him. Still I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything else. I enjoyed both the good and bad and I am proud that I was there during the dawn of gaming.
The reason Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all have red masks is because the box art is using the original comic book art. It's actually the front cover of Issue #4. The cartoon version had a number of differences from the original comics, like the different colored headbands for each turtle. But yeah they probably should have used the better known cartoon artwork since the game is based on the cartoon not the comics.
What's amusing about the Chrono Trigger box art is that it WAS accurate - at least, accurate when the artist created it. It's essentially an anime version of a screenshot from a beta image of the game. The box art was accurate at the time, but that beta image never made it to the real game, so you can't blame the artist for that one. :-D
I hope you do more videos... I get a little tired of always seeing the same perspectives on old games, so it's great to see a girl's take on these... and you're just adorable!

These days, the back of the box or case says little or nithing about the game, as designers have expected gamers to have read all about the game on the internet, months in advance lol
Good thing box art is fairly important in AAA games today. I remember Bungie having several articles about just making the logo for Halo 3 and how much time it took them to get it just right. It's that kind of attention to detail that I admire about game development.
The reason was because Dragon Ball wasn't familiar in North America but they still wanted the game to be imported here so they changed and edited the Title, Cover Art, In game sprites and name/dialogue.
Another great video! I remember totally being attracted to the box art as a kid... especially at old independant video rental stores. I'd rent a nintnedo game almost every weekend, or me and a friend would pool our money (found change) together hit up just new releases, olie's video or dutch girl. It was hit or miss back in those days when judging from the box art... thank god for nintendo power
Haha that singing polar bear at the end is awesome! There used to be a show on G4 called Cinematech that was nothing but trailers and in-game clips from all kinds of weird import games, and they used to show that singing polar bear all the time! It was so cool because the whole game looks like it's just this polar bear dressed like that on stage singing all these Japanese songs in this weird Speak & Spell voice! hahaha
Agree with the coat on Marle in Chrono Trigger, but the move that Chrono, Marle and Frog are pulling off on the cover actually represents the Arc Impulse triple tech, which is quite accurately depicted here :)
i was a game master as a kid becouse i did't really get new games so i beat megaman zero 3 like 3 or more times and i was into RPG whit out knowing english,I was a really patient kid

I spend a lot of time looking for video game shows that are good and to be honest, so many of them suck. But your videos are not only good, they're great. You honestly are one of the most talented video game video makers I've seen in a long time. Consider me a subscriber.
The first TMNT game has a bit of a weird history. Konami got the license to make the game initially, but they needed two different versions to accommodate both the comic AND cartoon show which in fact are very different from each other. The b&w comic had the Turltes wearing the same colors as it didn't matter for the media. So the original NES game represents the comic more which is also noted by the bizarre enemies that most folks have no idea of since they appeared in the comic only.
I remember a wolfenstein with street fighter characters. i used to play it on the computer, way back with windows 95, it was a cd with lots of different games including wolfenstein.
Most of the people who bought Wolfenstein 3D never saw the box before their purchase. The game was originally distributed as shareware, with the first few levels distributed for free through BBSs (and the Internet for those rare few who were lucky enough to have access back then.) Generally, people wouldn't see the box until they sent away for the full version, which would be after they'd already played the shareware levels.
Wow, some of these comments are...interesting. Yeah, you're right about TMNT. They were designed to look like the comic book characters, who had no colored masks. With Phalanx, they put the old man on there because they said all Shooter box art looked the same at the time. They wanted to shake things up a bit I guess . Great video :D
That was exactly it, Anime outside of japan barely existed back then, and most publishers/developers felt the style was too weird and foreign and would alienate the Western audience.
Hey baby, the original bomberman art you showed actually belongs to another Hudson Soft game called "Bomber King". And yes, he does look cool like that in the game too.
@RetroVGamer funny thing is i was born in 1993 and i still was able to experience the origanal comic i love both versions of the turtles but i still perfer the badass version of them and on he first ninja turtles game it shows the origanal turtles on the game art even though they wore the different colored bandannas in the game but thanx for mentioning that i though only me and my uncle were the only ones who remembered that
Good video. I remember being a kid and waiting until my birthday or christmas to get a game and all you had to go off of was the cover art of a new game. I picked many crappy games just going off the pictures on the box. Kids today don't know how lucky they are compared to the crap my generation got stuck with.
Quite an insightful video. At first i thought it was going to be an avgn clone of sorts but it turned out to be pretty good. I agree with all the points made and it made me feel very nostalgic...and old lol. I remember the exact same feeling of disappointment when i played a game that was so far removed from its box art. Or seeing something in the box art and hoping it would be in the game, but alas it wasn't. good video. :)
in the original Ninja Turtles comics all their bandana's were red. i wont nerd rage about the mistake though because honestly the cartoon and early 90's films are what made them famous...im one of the few turtles fans who likes the multicolored headbands.
Cool vid! I always thought that was weird with the boxart. Whats funny is that they are still doing it today (Megaman 9 and 10 are great examples) Quick note for the chrono trigger cover i believe it had something to do with a japan only release of a short anime with the games release. Also the PS1 version and DS version had cutscenes with them wearing the winter clothing.
Just to point out something...well, that we all know. The Mega Man (1) box art was a forced rush job, since the guy who drew it was told he had mere HOURS to make the art and was given very simple instructions. Hence Bad Box Art Mega Man as we call him today. Honestly, I'm totally fine with it since we got the hilarious "covers" for 9 and 10.

I learned from Chrono Trigger fans that part of the Chrono Trigger boxart DOES make sense. Apparently, Marle and Lucca are using a dual tech called Antipode or something. It involves ice and fire. I love that game, and yes, you're 100% right about the monster you fight there not being right. ^_^ Awesome boxart though, and i love your videos!
When Lucca and Marle use that dual tech, Lucca shoots fire and Marle shoots ice then the two mix together to harm the enemy. So, technically Marle still shoots ice magic. Anyway, Lucca's not even on the cover!! :)
