I appreciate everyone who's recommended more prime examples of map tools. Doom Wads are a fantastic example, one I definitely wish I thought to mention in this. Garry's Mod also deserves credit, In hindsight I would addendum that as well. I never played LittleBigPlanet, we only had a PS2 and 360 growing up (never a PS3). Now that I own a PS4, i'll have to finally try the series.
Snapmaps may have also been a good mention, both for its initial limitations and eventual improvement. You can't cover everything though, so great video still.
Feelsbad that we got snapmap in 2016 instead, and had to mess with megatextures and other bs if we wanted to fiddle with hard modding. This is why Doom 2 is the superior game.
@@kirbykir Well modding the original is a lot easier than all the work it takes to make a AAA game nowadays, so doing anything like what has been done with Doom 2 would be really hard. Snapmap was also meant to allow people on consoles to make and play custom maps so that's another reason it is limited. So it would be an argument for making games simpler instead of more complex because that leads to better modding possibilities.
Wow. This has to be the BEST transitions and editing I've ever seen. The script is flowing, and the video never feels like it takes a long time to move.
FUNKe is the youtuber I want to be. Perfect transitions, always a blast to listen to and the pacing is top notch. And what's more, this hasn't changed in the years he's been here. Damn. This here is the guy I look up to
@@znk753 I do hear it almost everytime my little brother plays it and we even say it to eachother and pretty much everyone i know who plays minecraft says it, so would you please chill the f**k out? have you actually never heard people tell a joke before?
4:33 Is that the L4D2 LOTRs survival map? I love that map so much. The idea of a wave map that had you falling back to new areas was really fun. Having to do resource management with what was on had to buy enough time to fall back the new defend area. I also love the builder maps where you spent time to buy upgrades to help with defence.
@@oofieodyssey4349 Oh man Venturian Tale yeah. Shame they turned out the way they did, I watched them from like 8-15, so I was heartbroken to hear what they were actually like.
Its a shame the guy who owns the most popular version of that is an insane jackass who injects scripts into everyone's games via that map download to hijack people's servers and ban whoever he wants.
There were people in the OW forums unironically talking about needing to be a highly experienced programmer to use the OW workshop’s advanced programming tools
for anyone wondering how this was done, it was probably done with chroma key (greenscreen) and replay mod so the camera could be right in front of the green (or any color really) blocks.
Mapping is absolutely AMAZING at teaching kids geometry and helping them develop spacial awareness Making maps in hammer helped me a lot with becoming an engineer
@@mkontent Uh, like every website you've ever been on runs on Linux. RU-vid is on Linux servers. Games with online multiplayer are piping through Linux servers. If your'e serious, you are using Linux. And making more games playable on Linux is a big win.
Honestly more people need to know the benefit of map making in games, hell I made maps in forge on Halo 3 and now I'm doing things with Hammer and Unreal!
I remember in H3 if you wanted to place a block flying in the air the 'best' way to do it was to save while holding the block in mid air (or something similar), then quit, then restart the level. FOR EVERY BLOCK. Lmao
Or if you were a mapmaker for Far Cry 2 on Xbox 360, an island in the shape & biology of one (I don't think it served much research purpose though, but it certainly proved potentially disturbing). But also if you were a mapmaker for Far Cry 2, you might make a 16km mountain rally or even painstakingly recreate Jurassic Park (Seems to be a Far Cry tradition seeing as Far Cry 5 has it's own attempts).
i love it when games go as far as to giving full customisability on the older maps/assets i order for the creators to edit or even recreate a map also the transitions are so beautiful
Great video! One of my favorite games throughout the years with a map builder is Little Big Planet, the amount of creativity that some people showed in that game was insane.
Yes imagine if an innocent kid sees that glitch. Ohh my the horror they would get exposed to. Are you looking for more members for your research squad? Cuz I would definitely be interested in um, protecting the innocent kids. Also we still don't know a lot about the healerius mercyus so that'd be very interesting to observe
@@tbotalpha8133 Mobility is gonna be the most poorly translated thing. Most maps have some really low skyboxes (Some even stop a 2 sticky jump!) and none of them were designed for characters like Pharah or Widowmaker. (Jetpack and grapple hook) However, Mannpower maps might actually work for that. Valve...please give us a more refined Mannpower!
HoI4 and EU4, made by Paradox whos recognized for expensive and loads of dlcs, allows their users who dont have dlc be able to make their own maps. Now we have literal ways to imitate global warming in the game with mods lol
-Commentary on surf maps -Used to have a toon link profile picture -Are you leafy???11111- Yeah you're right, its a dead joke either way like his channel. But you brought it up in the first place
Bro I fucking loved those halo maps, just u and ur friends ramming each other with ur vehicles with one death zone in the middle. that just brought back so much memories.
3:20 You mean: They gave the tools to create the MOBA genre then let it slip out of their hands onto the floor then they tried to make their own and failed miserably.
@@sorarivers8667 eh, they have a similar amount of game modes to other games, and workshop let's us have more. The modes they have seem tired and dry because their maps suck ass.
+Roland T.H.E. Jabberwocky the problem isn’t that the maps are bad, the problem is they’re only good for the core gamemode. And also the arcade maps do suck yeah
This video was great, man Hammer is a pain in the arse but it's satisfying being able to build something in a game you love with no proper development knowledge.
I really love your editing! It’s smooth, the transitions are fun and eye-grabbing, and it’s obvious how much effort and fun you both had and put into this
3:39 This is why I keep coming back to this video. The amazing little Animation of FUNKE pressing the icon to translation. It so well animated, and just the perfect length!
I love watching underrated channels demonstrate quality in a way current big channels lack. This video went in depth of something I personally loved myself and reinforced my beliefs for me. You did an amazing job with the editing and gags in this video, it's amazing.
Holy SHIT dude. Your editing and formatting have gone through the ROOF since your last batch of videos! Outstanding work, sincerely fun to watch! Also valuable opinion for devs to take note!
