For those wondering: I've already made videos about newer games (ultrakill, titanfall 2 etc) so those aren't listed here. These are legacy games that went on to inspire modern movement shooters. So a lot of it is my personal bucket list, but not a definitive one. And yes, I know DOOM is on steam. That was joke

Fun fact about Doom and Quake (and their sequels) . The replay feature, that let you rematch matches in engine worked completely by recording the keypresses of the players and recording the frame they pressed and held the button. Since the randomness was determined by an equation they just needed the seed value and you could always replay it perfectly with that data.

It's a very small part of the video but I absolutely LOVE the animated fiddling with the N64 controller analog stick when explaining Turok's controls 12:10 . It's sooo satisfying to watch! The lively animated hands, the sound, the glorious crunchy yet clean image of the controller. Perfection!

Sadly ruined by the inaccuracy of, "Goldeneye made you turn using the C-buttons"... no, no they didn't. C-Up, and C-Down were look up and down, while C-Left, and C-Right were strafing. Turok was ingenious for placing all movement on the C-buttons, while having all looking on the analog stick

Turok 1 and 2 were both AMAZING but holy hell did they have a massive learning curve. Some of those levels were insanely difficult to casually play through and it was super easy to get lost. Damn I miss them.

Very fun and informative insight on some of the best games ever made! I wanna throw out a recommendation for Unreal Gold. It's not the easiest thing to find a download for since epic delisted it for no good reason but it is out there. The game's vibes are insane and the weapons are genuinely bonkers. Like a 6-barrel grenade launcher that you can charge up and dump like six explosives at once or a shotgun that just fires SHRAPNEL that bounces off the walls. It's got REALLY good graphics and superb art direction for '98 and the music (done by alexander brandon who worked on deus ex) is just so amazing. Apparently Unreal Tournament's deathmatch is really good too but I haven't delved too deep into deathmatching myself. edit: aw.

yeah the ending hurt a lot lol in the unreal discords im in like unrealsp and unreal multiplayer a reacurring half joke is that unreal is cursed by a witch or something into semi obscurity. Its probably one of the most distinct experiences ive had with a video game and i still play it and the tournament games semi frequently. I just wish more people gave unreal the spotlight in video essays, its always a footnote and never a main focus.

@@xanious3759 yeah its vibes make me really happy, I love low poly graphics and the atmosphere they're going for really agrees with me. Makes me wish Unreal continued as a singleplayer series that just involved exploring different planets each with their own little stories and locations and characters/enemies. The Na'li sky city is like one of my favorite locations in any game, the art direction is so stellar and I would love more games that look like it.

unreal was gonna continue with more singleplayer focused entries but after atari shafted unreal II hard they focused on the UT games and then gears happened. Epic chased trends and digital went off to do their own thing. A relatively common consensus is that digital extremes is unreal's "real parent" since Unreal Championship 1 (which was handled exclusively by them) has a much darker and moodier tone than the other UT2 era games and a soundtrack more in line with UT99 and unreal gold. Not to mention that warframe, digital's current project, is basically unreal/UT's universe with ninjas and the names changed. I dont think modern epic being so anti consumer has helped things.
