Video of Atlanta in the 90s (Newcomer Video - Atlanta 1992)

From what I can tell, these tapes were locally-sponsored productions made for recent transplants to cities.
This one provides insightful images of Atlanta in the early 90s - MARTA buses, shopping malls, and interstates - as well as some jarring examples of how quickly times change (the segment on Stone Mountain amazingly never mentions the Civil War despite listing all of the Confederate generals on the mountain's façade).
Under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research.

I got here 30 years too late. Now it’s just an overcrowded corporate cesspool. Same as every other sprawling city in the sunbelt😢

I partially grew up in Atlanta 5-10 years after this - cool to see the puppetry center, Six Flags American Adventure, Lake Lanier, and of course downtown.

Missing from this video was the Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park. Since this video was created, Georgia Aquarium was built and opened in 2005. Old Altanta Fulton County Stadium and Omni Coliseum and Georgia Dome are no more, and were replaced with Turner Field (originally 1996 Olympic Stadium, but don't know if it still retains the Turner Field name since Georgia State acquired it after Braves left), State Farm Arena (formerly Philips Arena), and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, respectively, plus the addition of Truist Park (formerly SunTrust Park). We also got the Atlanta United soccer team, and the Knights and Trashers hockey teams are gone. Stone Mountain, Fox Theater, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Fernbank, and Zoo Atlanta, and other attractions are still around too.

3:15 Man it is so good to see a video in an era where auto racing (NASCAR, NHRA, and IndyCar) actually got respected even among those who didn't follow it that much.

That's Mariette Hartley, who did those Polaroid commercials with James Garner in the late '70s and early '80s.

This is so interesting! Does anyone remember a "Welcome to Atlanta" VHS like this one that was made (or marketed) by WSB-TV in the 1990s? I remember a copy lying around the house when I was a kid but it likely got tossed out when my mom and stepdad moved.

The 1996 Olympics hurt a lot of people to the benefit of many rich people. Business in general slowed and waned in anticipation of the Games to where real estate and other sectors were wary of making any moves, worried about what the Games would do, how they would change the city after the games, paused to take whatever advantages might materialize or avoid any pitfalls. Small businesses were shut down without compensation during the weeks of the Games. Bill Campbell eventually went to prison for tax evasion.

I think it's time for a return of Service Merchandise, only done right and updated, a store you go to with one or two samples of everything they sell on the shelves that you order on a list you make on paper (now on your smart phone) and pick up on your way out or later. It's brought from the back warehouse right up front (right away, not delayed as before), You pay and go, no hiking all through a megastore as big as a small town. No ordering and waiting for delivery with shipping charges added to your cost. I think there is a niche for this.

This video 📹 makes me miss this simple, sporty but relaxed era in time. 🥲 I may have been born in 96, but i can see the simplicity and fun nature of 1992 somewhat. I came to Atlanta in 2004 with my mom, it's not the same as back then 😢 But I'm grateful to at least see Atlanta closer to 2000 and when this video was made.

678 & 770 didn't exist until mid to late 90"s. Hell, I remember not having to use the 404 area code to make local calls until the late 80's early 90's.

Atlanta University Complex? Too afraid of the backlash if they said "Black colleges"? Just a reminder of how long it has taken to accept Black folks as legitimate citizens. They didn't want to tarnish the promotion of Atlanta with such a negative mention of race. The least They could have said is Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Why not simply include them all with all the other colleges and universities? Just had to keep them separate.
