Other routes may go via Switzerland.
If you want to save a bit of money, you could opt to make more than one change. It likely wouldn't take much longer than the journey shown in the video the only difference being you'd spend a lot less longer on any given train.
Just a little bit of info to correct. Top speed for the portion of the trip between Frankfurt and Paris is actually 320km/h (199mph) as opposed to the 300km/h (186mph) stated in the video.

Would be cool to see a trip between London to Barcelona in this style. It's a journey I'm hoping to make next year myself. Will be Glasgow to Barcelona, but I'm used the journey between Glasgow and London. Just need to decide if it'll be a 8h sleeper, or 4h Avanti plus cheap hotel in London. Thinking it'll be Eurostar to Paris or Lyon, then TGC/AVE from either of them BCN.

@M1CAE1.

@@dr.rajarshiraha6627 As of February Sleeper prices had skyrocketed, me and my dad could no longer get value for our money from London to Dundee, so we ended up flying to Edinburgh, and getting a train from Haymarket. If this is still the case, which I would not be surprised if it was, considering the pandemic, then Sleeper travel will probably not be a viable option, it may be cheaper to spend 1 night in a Travelodge in London.

German speaking Europe uses the same linguistic building blocks to name their cities a lot. Look up how many towns are named "Neustadt" (New City). The additions on the end are extremely necessary to know which one is which. Technically its Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the Main). the other Frankfurt used to be called Frankfurt an der Oder, but the East Germans dropped the "an der" and its official name is now just Frankfurt (Oder). One of the strangest name shortenings is the the town of Hann. Münden, where the dot is an official part of the name. It was originally called just "Münden", which along with variations like Minden, Gmünd, Gemunden, etc, means mouths of a river, like the Welsh "Aber". It was consistently confused with other towns, so they added "Hannoversch" to the name as it was part of the kingdom of Hannover. That didn't fit on railway tickets so just "Hann. Münden" was printed. Finally in 2006, the town council said "what the heck" and officially changed the name to "Hann. Münden" since it isn't really near Hannover at all and the Kingdom of Hannover ceased to exist in 1866.

The common areas and transitions between cars seem very pleasant on the DB train. Super nice club car. I also like to keep my things nearby, if possible, not in the vestibule, and the DB trained seemed to have more near-to-seat storage (yes, I'm paranoid about someone stealing my bag, even though it gas *never, ever* happened!) The lighting on the SNCF seemed super harsh and that just got worse as the day grew darker! Their club car doesn't look like a place I'd want to spend too much time. Great post! 👍

Kudo's Dylan! Always love your videos!! It just blows my mind that we can’t get our act together as the richest Country on earth and have high speed rail going from Coast to Coast in America. Honestly, the U.S. has lost it's shine to me. I wish I had stayed in Central Europe in Bratislava. I was literally only a 40 min train ride to Vienna! I miss it...a LOT! "It just blows my mind that we can get our act together as the Richest Country on earth and have high speed rail going from Coast to Coast in America." I like trains as well, but it infuriates me that railfans consistently lack the ability to have any critical thought when it comes to HSR. This journey for example makes no sense to take the train. A flight takes 2 hours and costs less. And that is the issue with HSR, in America, the line between short enough to drive or long enough to fly is so close that HSR has very limited options to exist. And HSR across the continent is simply ridiculous. And railfans never seem to consider the immense cost of HSR.

Owen Major I agree with your very valid points. But IF we had started years ago, we could have had networks going from smaller metro areas such as Sacramento to Reno, then Reno to Boise, Boise to Denver. These would have been far smarter than the Carbon footprint of flying from Boise to Denver. Unless you’re flying from a major hub to major hub or Metro, flying is NOT cheaper than rail. When I was in Bratislava, I could buy a Train ticket from Vienna to Rome for 15 Euros! To fly that same route was 120 Euros. So don’t be too infuriated my friend, because the Petroleum industry clearly has you drinking their Kool-Aid 😃😛
@TheOwenMajor
@TheOwenMajor 4 года назад
@@TheStoneWhisperer What are the passenger numbers for the routes you are suggesting and what percentage would take the train? Then what is a rough cost estimate for building and maintaining HSR for said routes? Rough numbers are fine. I want to see your math on how to justify the expense to provide a redundant mode of transport. Vienna to Rome is 20 Euro on our favorite Irish airline. It is less than a 2 hour flight. Taking the train takes how long? Europe isn't N. America. Different demographics, different geography.
@TheStoneWhisperer
@TheStoneWhisperer 4 года назад
Owen Major my point exactly. IF years ago we took a different route to solve commuting & transportation concerns we could be where Europe is. But we chose a different route. Too bad....

Enjoyed the ride Dylan. I preferred the ICE myself it just seemed more inviting. The TGV also had a few obvious problems, restroom door not locking, flourescent light flashing on/off. Don't know if anyone ever suggested, but would it be possible to see what food offerings the restaurant cars have on these trains ? I'm interested because the U.S. trains are cutting back on food service and serving pre-packaged horrible stuff instead of the real diner service we used to get. I notice the younger passengers bringing their own food in backpacks. Just a suggestion, your videos are great.

@@ninasiddle8569 At least an hour could be saved if it was a single-train trip, without having to change trains. A typical overnight train in the U. S. is usually 14 to 16 hours, leaves around dinner time and gets to it's destination mid-morning, allowing for passengers to enjoy dinner and breakfast on-board, if the food service is good enough. I still think it would be a good candidate for an overnight train, I mean it would connect two major European capitals, there certainly would be ridership for a service like that.

Would this trip be faster if you took the Regiojet to Zurich, and then the TGV to Paris? those parts from Salzburg to Frankfurt and through the mountains west of Mannheim are quite slow as well and it feels like a big detour.. Maybe going via Munich is faster as well after the new high speed line from Ulm to Stuttgart finishes?
@DylansTravelReports

I think both routes take roughly the same amount of time give or take an hour.

How long does it take from austria to Paris?
@JoernBeneken
@JoernBeneken 3 года назад
Unfortunately Germany is not willing to speed up the German part of the line via Saarbruecken. 200 will be maximum in future. ICE train looks very comfortable and modern. TGV is really fast but mostly the interior is shabby and rude. SNCF s trains are often in bad condition.

@@DylansTravelReports more in value for money. Its awful in the UK, the cost of your 12hr train journey only £83?! Amazing value for money. Granted you could fly for that amout to each of these destinations from the UK but travelling within those countries for £83 is very good value for money.

Thanks for your feed back. My main reason for doing captions is I feel adding voice over would take away from a more "raw" travel experience.

Dave Baker I think it’s pre-COVID-19 outbreak. He mentions in the beginning while explaining how to buy tickets that ticket prices went up since he traveled due to COVID. So that would suggest the video was taken prior.
