The Vietnam should be an example taught in schools. About courage. Courage and dedication transcended the perceived role of the participants. Were the "front line" soldiers due high respect? Of course. But also the support folks. Nurses, doctors, drivers, helicopter crews, all branches. There were no rear lines. Everyone was in harms way, and performed their jobs. It was not a simple event to understand. I evaced to the hospital ship Sanctuary. It had to leave harbor and ride out a typhoon. Not a thing that anyone expected or signed up for. While there, I talked to a Marine who nearly died from heat when he first got in country. On the hospital ship he volunteered to help the incoming med evaced wounded. All the gung ho training went out the window when he tried to carry a wounded soldier out of the helicopter. The man was in pajamas, the pants were blood soaked. The Marine put the soldier's arm over his shoulder and grabbed him around the back with one arm. Swung his other arm under the legs of the pajama pants to lift the guy. But there were no legs in the pants. Reality was not at all like the movies. Courage and fear and doubt and loyalty were everywhere, at every level. War is indeed hell and must be a last resort. Soldiers and those who have been in war, are never the ones who declare war. They are the true cost of war.

It's interesting that ALL the time that the nurses got in this video of them in Vietnam was 6 minutes and 57 seconds out of 13 minutes and 09 seconds. Especially, for all that we nurses do for patients in the field or in civilian hospitals back in the world.

Is Director Herchberger still with you? I told him about his World Twin, I knew at US State Department a couple times I had the pleasure of working for him on sets.
