The United States Special Forces are a force to be reckoned with, but like any great nation, they weren't built in a day. Just ask Colonel Rich Wall, a Vietnam Green Beret with three tours under his belt - two with Special Forces before pivoting into the MACV-SOG Program, a highly classified Special Operations unit that conducted covert and unconventional warfare operations. He'd go on to receive the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars for his time in country, along with having taught history at West Point and working with NATO at the Pentagon.
Of course, Vietnam is a totally different theater to the more arid climates (and more modern trappings) of the Middle East, and to hear Rich tell it, you were just as likely to catch disease as you were to catch fire from your adversaries waiting for you in the jungle. So what's it like to ship out in a draft army? How did Special Forces operate back then, and how did those operations influence future works? And if Vietnam was really as bad as the history books say, then what could possible possess a man to go back again and again? Let's meet Rich.

No f!#kin way I'd ever vote democrat., this veteran agrees brothers 👍🏻🇱🇷💯💪. Incidentally, i worked with a SEAL, who was our EOD officer, a warrant at the time, that served many tours in 'nam with SEAL team 1, originally a UDT team 11 member first, then after one tour, went back stateside through cadre and on into SEAL team 1. He participated in the Phoenix program, and a member of PRU unit 1, tasked with liberating POWs from the various POW prisons. I was US Navy Special Weapons Lebanon Grenada & NATO Europe 81-87. My father was also military. 7th division Army Sargeant Korean war, 50-53.

Man! When the Col spoke of his Grandson, and what Tanner had to say about his Grandfather was AWESOME! And then we find out the Colonel's Daughter/Tanner's Mom is a Sr MSgt in the AF after being an Army MP. What a great episode! My Dad, and both of his brothers were in during Vietnam. The oldest was in Korea and did 2 tours in Vietnam and Retired from the Army. All their friends were Vietnam or Korean vets. I grew up hearing stories from birth. Growing up I read and watched everything military related. And for my 20 yrs in the Marine Corps I read and studied warfare and Mil history. I thought I was pretty well versed in special, covert, clandestine, black Operations in Vietnam. Plus I've been a podcast junkie since I retired in 2012. Colonel Wall told some stuff today I had never heard of. Absolutely one of the best podcast episodes ever. Great job Mike!

“Our training was a lot easier back then compared todays standard” dude those old SF guys are so humble… Like, they had around 5 people dying in every class 💀 not too mention MAVC-SOG, everyone of those guys should’ve received the Medal of Honor for the balls that they had. They had the highest k/d ratio in US military history at 157 to 1 while also suffering over a 100% casualty rate
