I live in Denmark, one of the happiest countries in the world, and STILL people find minor things to complain about. You cannot grow up as a priviledged kid, without being spoiled a bit. When push comes to shove, people here still stand together, and still help each other. Having no major financial trouble leaves room for you to have empathy and sympathy, for those less fortunate. Luckily the Danish society has one of the best social security systems in the world, so noone HAS to starve

A couple things to note, Iceland is actually quite green, with a relatively mild winter owing to the ocean currents. Greenland, on the other hand, is NOT green, and the interior of Greenland is solid ice. Other things to note, the richest country, the USA, isn't even close to being on this list, and all the countries on this list are secular, with strict separation of religion and government.

I think it's nice to see that the US isn't always being portrayed in the most unrealistic light for people in other countries. Babu and the gang believe that happiness comes from governments and their people working together. We're jamming to an entirely different tune here, with higher overdose deaths and youth suicides since the start of the pandemic, not to mention a healthcare system which is total crap. The US might be a good example for Babu of just how little material wealth actually does play a role in true happiness.

Not necessarily. In Japan the children under 5 are not even lectured, and the kids are treasured. Im Danish, we are happy because we have free heathcare and education. It also helps that crime and corruption is low
@xenotypos
@xenotypos 2 года назад
@VeroMithril Maybe but that's not the only thing that leads to it. In France there's free healthcare and education too, yet there is a lot of crime (for western European standards). People increasingly don't trust each other (a bit like in USA), they live mostly within communities of different cultural backgrounds (like in USA...). Many blame mass immigration, which changed French society forever. But granted, France never had the same societal cohesion scandinavian countries had anyway. Still, I think homogenous societies naturally tend to have less criminality. Look at Japan, South Korea, Nordic countries... But once again, it's just one factor too, I'm not saying it's everything.
@xenotypos
@xenotypos 2 года назад
@VeroMithril Lol, come and live here, you'll see how your views are wishful thinking. I grew up in one of those poor areas and: - they are French citizens. They have access to free healthcare, free education (more money is invested in "difficult schools" than in normal ones) and if they don't have a job the state gives a minimum income. Those that are denied citizenship have nothing to do in France and are illegally living there. I didn't even talk about them anyway, as the numbers are uncomparable and there is enough problems with french citizens. - there is simply no respect for the state or order in those areas, it's "cool" to attack the police, to be a rebel. Islam also plays a huge role in terms of common identity, which divides society. In general now you're usually more sympathetic toward your group (except for whites), like in USA. - nobody is segregated but something was observed after some decades, something that happens naturally despite the efforts of the state to hinder the phenomena: people tend to want to live together in their own community (it's not everyone, but it's often the case in practice). No matter what the state wants, it keeps happening. Asians with Asians, blacks with blacks, Arabs with Arabs, and regarding white people well where I lived, those that could tended to leave (it became harder and harder to live there). I have to say though, that Asians never created any problems. "I'd suggest you guys to fix your mess" Oh thank you it's not like the state has been doing that for 20 years. We really needed someone with no insight about what's going on to show us how it's done. Btw, no country ever managed to "fix" that problem, as it's the same in countries that chose the same path, like Britain and USA. Don't get me wrong it's not hell either. But it's just a different society, with less standards toward safety, more internal divisions, less cohesion. Successful integration imho, doesn't depend that much on the effort you put into those that arrived (as we proved here by our failures) but mostly depends on how you practice immigration to begin with, it's more successful if: - if you choose who immigrate based on their academic level. Not just anyone randomly. - if your home culture is close to the immigrants' (imho Islam may be a real barrier to overcome, when it's a really big community, sry but it's true). - if you limit how many people you let in: people are more motivated to assimilate and mix with the rest of the population if they're a small minority. Once they reach a certain number, there is no need to change or to mix, as there is enough people like them, they can just stay between themselves. Immigration itself can work, but mass immigration in a short amount of time, comes with unavoidable downsides. France didn't do any of those three points. It's not "fixable" anymore, no matter how much money is burnt on it again and again. It's just how society is now.

Iceland and Greenland were given opposite names so people travelling by sea would avoid Iceland which is beautiful and go to Greenland which really is just a big, barren rock covered in ice. Seriously, not a single tree or bush anywhere, it's kind of weird to see.
@Mike-ox8sq
@Mike-ox8sq 2 года назад
NOT true. I am Danish. In the Viking age Vikings set sail on a discovery mission and discovered Iceland. Since it had more ice then that now they named it "Iceland". They returned and tried to persuade other Vikings to go there to settle but very few found that to be an attractive idea. In the countries we now call Scandinavia farming had begun and very few Viking settlements there were above 1000 people. Farming in Scandinavia then was a hard job and weather had a big say in any years yield. So for a Viking settlement to "invest" in building ships and build up provisions for a longer expedition and/or settlement were taking huge tolls on the local area. Additionally the men going would not be able to pull their weight locally while away. So despite failing in getting any to go back to newly discovered Iceland, the men around the group that discovered Iceland decided to try to make a new discovery expedition even further away. Incredible enough they managed to set sail for that expedition just two years after returning from Iceland. This time they even changed the masterplan from the get go. They made an even larger expedition with more ships and brought enough men, ships and tools/provisions to be able to leave a group of men should they find new land. So they went away and discovered Greenland. They made contact with the inuits from the beginning and it was a mutual friendly encounter. So the expedition leader and his trusted sailors left the designated men and provision and returned promising the men staying that they would do their outmost to make sure that adventure and fortune seeking men and women would join them already the year after. The men staying should prepare basic a settlement and learn how to be able to live of the land as best they could. With the fiasco in persuading anyone to go to Iceland in mind, the men returning had time to hatch a plan on how to make this, even more ice filled land, look like an attractive life investment for those they hoped to be able to join them next year for a more permanent settlement opportunity. SO, basically they came up with the name GREENland as a marketing stunt based on their previous experience that ICEland was not a name that immediately gave an impression of a place anyone wanted to move to. THIS is the true story of how the icy Greenland got its modern name. The name turned out to be a succes in the sense that they actually managed to send further ships with settlers away the year after. Traces of the original settlement and others that followed can be seen in Greenland to this date. Now you know. Now we are clearing up misunderstandings. Although Denmark later became a colonial power in warmer climates, Danes have never enslaved anyone in Greenland. Inuits were a very isolated people and they had a real problem with inbreeding. This was a real danger for these remote and isolated inuit settlements thus it was costume that, and this have been described in documents many many places over many hundreds of years, that visiting strangers were costumely invited to stay as guests, accompanied by the younger inuit females as igloo guests. Inuits did not have the same concept of lifelong marriages, although some couples stayed together for life, if was not the norm. Very few women had all their children with the same man and having a baby as a result of a stranger passing by was seen as an asset. These babies later became attractive as partners since they represented a good prevention against the chance for getting children with birth defects. Inuits elders were known to walk to certain points when they felt they were a larger burden for the others, they simply laid down and felt to sleep and thus never woke up again. Children with birth defects were not unusual, for the reasons mentioned and same faith fell upon them. The sorrow that this represented in all inuit groups, a mothers grief, made the tradition to greet strangers as described seemed a clever and necessary tradition. Vikings and Inuits were generally not blending their traditions and lifestyles into one, but both benefitted greatly from trade and social interaction. The Viking settlements were stationary but the inuits were primarily nomads moving depending on that years weather and ice development in a circular way, so they had certain places they met and interacted with other different groups, including the Vikings. A large reason why Denmark early on and today have a high climate change awareness and actually have been and still are progressing towards a greenhousegas emission free society are that we can see our Greenlandic family have been hit hard earlier than elsewhere on earth. Glaciologists from Copenhagen and Aalborg University have been forefront in providing scientific proof of the actual changes over time. The inland ice in Greenland are so thick and have so many years of winters snowfall that they can be observed as tree rings. More than 500.000 years of seasonal snowfall including atmospheric content can be pulled up as drilled icecores. That proves that earth for more than 500.000 years have had a rather stable atmospheric CO2 content of 220 PPM carbon. In around 170 years, since the beginning of the industrial revolution this has exploded to now, in end 2021, have reached catastrophically 417 PPM carbon. To put the 500.000 years into context man left African continent around 65.000 years ago. So we basically have a YEAR BY YEAR monitoring of global atmospheric content including, pollen counts, ash identification from volcanos around the world, acidity in rain and much more for a period close to 10 times longer than modern man has existed. The kingdom of Denmark consists of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe islands and our family have coexisted for more than 1000 years. It is hard for many in Denmark to watch as many in Greenland struggle to adapt to a new time where old traditions simply cant be maintained. 200 years ago there were ice around Greenland, and thus perfect hunting grounds for for seal and fish around 9-10 months a year, now it barely are 3 months thus far from even sustain one family with own needs. Slowly but surely the population are able to raise their BNP and adapt to the necessary changes this new reality. The Greenlandic inuits will prevail but hearing an ally´s president´s "offer" to buy them and their land calling it a "real estate really" surely was an insult and betrayal of such dimensions that it probably are why we went from number 1 to 3 on the happiness index. The American population´s failure to be enraged over their president giving colonial offers in 2020, 100 years after last colonial deal were made, and something this world forever should have left behind, have not helped. On top Trump insulted our queen. Last time someone cancelled an agreed state dinner, hosted by our King/Queen where severe illness or death were not the cause, Denmark went to war. The apology Denmark and Greenland have not received from USA over this are something I personally will remember to the day I die. The Kingdom of Denmark have for more than 60 years granted USA land to host a base from where they (and thus NATO) have been able to monitor and protect especially US mainland against any incoming missiles from USSR/Russia and THIS is how we get thanked! Any illusions of US as a good decent ally, for whom we have participated in numerous wars they asked us to, have been shattered and only ones laughing are Putin, XI and Bin Salman. Trump has been a major destabilizing global factor and many in the US population have so little insight that they dont even understand it. The good are crying and the evil are laughing.

The ladder was an attempt to broaden your knowledge and, for others that might wanted to read along, tie a knot to the clip and the fact that Denmark dropped from no 1 spot to 3. An ally that treat you and your nations and Queen that way are a stab in the back from an ally that you have been more than reasonable supportive of.. Getting stabbed in the back have some influence on ones general happiness, right? As said, USA threw a boomerang and the degrading of US as a trusted ally, far beyond our borders, was exactly what Putin ordered Trump to do. The socalled "offer" Trump gave will go into the history books way beyond Denmark and USA. I am sure history eventually will prove this was done by Trump after Putin, his masters, order. The Kingdom of Denmark have existed for 1000 years and this insult will be remembered long after my death. It will forever stand as a shameful event in US history. I though doubt USA will stand as a united nation or union for the next 1000 years. The last election was in itself very close to be the last for USA´s fragile democracy if you even still can call it that. If USA can break itself up without internal war I guess it will be a win for the populations. Might increase the ranking for all the new unions formed in happiness. If you dont see a direct lineage between Putins actions right now at Ukraines borders and Trumps slaughtering of US´s credibility, you have a very limited understanding of the world. The good, and I generally include normal Americans in that category, are crying and the evil are laughing. Fascism and kleptocracy are knocking at US´s door and many evil forces are putting gasoline on the fire. May calm, justice and a realisation of the gravity of this historic time dawn on the American people so they can fix their democracy and transform their society to a non greenhouse gas emitting one faster than any can imagine, or we will all be dragged down as well. Do try to have a nice day and do try to be appreciate when people point to faults you make, deliberately or not. ONLY a friend will tell you the truth, your enemies will laugh while you shame out yourself. Dont shoot the messenger also comes to mind.

It's a good idea for a video, but basing it around coronavirus isn't the way to it. Every country had different problems, some more congested, larger population, more or less isolated regionally, some got a deadlier variant etc. Economics as well is not the only measure. Also external aggression from other countries is a factor.

So... they are almost all in Northern and Western Europe. New Zealand is mainly inhabited by people originating from that region. They have social welfare high on their priority list, which indeed helps a lot against poverty, due to loss of health or job. It's a social security system, where everybody pays into, and those, who need it for some time, reap the benefits from this type of state insurance. When my husband got seriously ill, the government payed him a benefit. A lot less than a paycheck, but enough to not get into debt immediately. When I lost my job, the government filled it for a while to 70%, so I could pay my ongoing living bills until I found another job. It's a Great system!

False Creek has no squatters in boats and the city's sewage system is being upgraded to deal with the increase of recreational vehicles as well as excess runoff from the city's overburdened and outdated street system. You sound like a Karen who doesn't want to share the neighbourhood. You can't squat on a boat that you own on public property but you can be arrested for a few other things including intentionally dumping raw sewage.

From the list healthy communities (good place for family, trust in one's fellow citizens, equality between all persons, social welfare that ensures all people are taken care of, and providing for the well-being of children), healthy politics (local and personal engagement and good governance), healthy economy (low unemployment, low inequality, and high incomes), and healthy nature (beautiful surroundings, sustainability, and living in nature) are key factors. May these things improve for all people, and may governments and communities focus on these things to improve all people's lives.

Babu is so right! Governments need to be of the people, for the people and by the people, in order to work with their citizens to ensure a happy society for everyone. I don't think happiness has anything to do with money or material possessions, for humans have been able to enjoy life for far longer than we've ever had civilizations built on exchange of currency. We need a relationship with the natural world which sustains us and a connection to others in our community who stand with us in times of need. People in less wealthy nations can still find happiness because they have their families and their villages.

Money is connected to good health, proper food, residence, a place to live costs money and they all contribute to good health. If you're rich however... That's different, being rich doesn't make you happy. Having a purpose in life, working towards something that means a lot to you is what makes you happy. And most people need atleast a certain amount of money to find that purpose, in order to find happiness.

Heck yeah, they finally got to see a bit of our little country! I knew it'd be on this list, it's been on it for years now. Happy to announce I live in the 5th happiest country in the world! I'm of the mindset that you don't need wealth to be happy, although enough to get you through each month is definitely an upside to things. Then again, the people in the Netherlands are stingy people. They're happy when things are cheap, and when they don't have to spend money at all. So I suppose that would also mean they'd be happier with having less money to spend. (Not that we're a poor country, we're actually doing reasonably well, really) We love to complain about everything, but even that tends to make us happy. If we don't have anything to complain about, we'll find something. There's always the weather, if nothing else.
