I thought about doing that, best would be to redraw whole areas and then cutting the tiles in the right size or some telling you what sprite to draw because I can't even remember every single piece but I wouldn't be able to look at the because that kinda defeats the purpose. Also I think this is fake and not impressive at all, I mean going into a door coming out of a pipe feels like on purpose trying too hard to make it look like it's from memory but basically such things don't need memory, just simple logic.

To the team: you did a great job with the hack, also I think the idea of having a few of your volunteer/team member try to recreate (in pixels) from memory, a screenshot of Mario World and then that picture could be used as the inspiration for the sprite hack, could potentially be a good way of doing. If that idea, makes sense... Lol. Idk if that comes off as confusing. I’m not super experienced with sprite hacking myself (only ever done a simple Mario swap hack that I kept for myself and never shared) but I thought that could be a cool way to do it. Like redrawing the sprites, based of your friends’ pixel drawings of what their memory thought they look like

When I saw this live, I was so mystified I had to backtrack and watch from the beginning. There really is something deeply unnerving about this Berenstein/Berenstain effect, where everything is so slightly off that you can't quite tell where your memory failed you, and where the ROM hacker's memory failed them.

It's kinda weird how they recreate some levels nicely but some of the most iconic themes get butchered, the only way the music would sound like this is if someone only knew SMW from decently far, but then the levels would be much farther than what they actually are somethings weird here

Agreed. There's a slim chance that Mario hackers don't remember those themes perfectly. There's only a few songs in SMW and they're extremely memorable. Definitely intentionally butchered at this point.

I thought this too. Also, some levels were just way too exact. I could believe remembering the basic layout, but not having the exact spacings on most sections. Im under the impression that they just started with the real levels, did some slight editing, did a butchered music job, then told everyone it was made from scratch

I know some of the people who worked on this and they didn't lie, this was done entirely from scratch, this was a huge team of people, a lot of whom are seasoned romhackers. Mostly what it comes down to is that the level editing tools are point and click, but the music is made in text files. Also, if someone moves a block a tile to the right, nobody notices, but if a note is slightly late or off, everybody can tell. The compositions are quite challenging to transcribe with some fairly tricky chords and harmonies and they weren't allowed to check any references.

The only injustice greater than the underutilization of Thwimps is the fact that the little Whomplets King Whomp summons in his redesigned fight in Galaxy 2 retained their Japanese name instead of being called Whimps. Come on, NoA, it was right there!

To be fair, it's extremely hard to recreate a song from memory. The castle and starman themes are super weird though, I have no idea how somebody would end up making them that way.

So I played through a bit of this and it seems like most levels fall into three categories: - Levels made by map makers who think levels should be harder (i.e. the ghost house before Star World) - Levels made by speedrunners who sprinkled in wishful thinking (made them more speedrun friendly, i.e. Star-2 which is way shorter) - Levels made by speedrunners who remember how a level made them feel (i.e. why the switch palaces are so long, since they'd be a bore for a 100% runner) I want to delve into the psychology of this exercise more than the actual hack.

Honestly I think they’re all actually made by a secret fourth type. People trying to recreate the levels from memory. I don’t think they’re making changes either on purpose or subconsciously

@@marcar9marcar972 I'm not assuming malice on the part of the creators. If you've ever played "Whisper down the lane", it's that sort of thing. Personal biases slip in organically. Also, I'm not sure who they could source for this kind of project other than modders and speedrunners.

I wonder about the process used to make this, maybe they just made the songs and as part of the challenge, weren't allowed to go back and make edits, because all of these songs seem fine except the key is way off, and anyone who has heard these songs before would immediately know something is up after playing it back just once.
