My favourite is when its in straight up the wrong time signature. The main overworld theme is originally in 3/4 but they did it in 4/4 in this.

I keep wondering if part of it is difficulty in accurately recreating even what you hear in your head. Cause I could remember some of these tunes more clearly, but I have doubts I could recreate them as good as I can remember them. Though I'm not experienced with the tools or with making music to be fair

Sometimes I sing a song I think I know well, only to actually play it and realize I was going too high/low/fast. (Generally too high/fast.) That, and you have my dad whistling the Yoshi Star Galaxy theme and still occasionally skipping notes despite us having listened to the tune fairly often. Memory just seems to be a really finicky thing with music. Wonder why.

especially since a door puts you out of a pipe which makes no sense, logic should have canceled that. So not sure how true it is that this was made from memory.

@@Tekape I believe different maps were assigned to different people, so if someone did the main map and someone else did the submap, it could have led to that. Either that or the person having conflicting memories but not being able to discount either.

@@Tekape in the SMW editor (LM), screen exits are pre-hardcoded based on the level being edited. when an exit object (i.e. pipe/door) is added, it automatically corresponds to the set exit. so for instance, if a level is set to have a pipe transition/exit, adding a door will still result in a pipe exit. in this case, the level author forgot the sublevel's entrance settings and mistakenly added a door. upon testing the level, the author would then realize their mistake. however, we felt like it would be more genuine and funny if we didn't fix those mistakes and kept them as they were in the 1st draft. I can assure you that everything was remade from memory. source being that I helped lead this project and made numerous levels

I barely remember the first stage in mario world and know the music waaaay better than this game I’d be cool if they were reharmonising some stuff for whatever reason but they were just really wrong all the time

Yea. And it's time for the "remade from memory" genre to be created

the process wasn't too complex. essentially, we made a google docs spreadsheet of every level in order, and then we created a version of the game with all the objects/sprites deleted (this is quite easy to do in lunar magic since there's a hotkey). someone would then go and "claim" a level and remake it from memory, and we'd all play it and have a good laugh. at the end, they were all inserted into the hack. the same process was done for the overworlds, messages, etc. one person just created a version with all of it deleted, and then everyone else added it all back from memory using the empty/blank version

@@alfo2804 I'll try to do my best to answer this despite not being a music porter. I just made a bunch of levels and helped organize the project. music is a tricky thing. for starters, porting snes music is not as simple as just creating a midi or using some sort of music software. porting is a painstaking process; it needs to be in a format that can be "read" by the snes. in this case, smw music is created using music commands in a text file. as you can imagine, creating music by typing out archaic music commands in a text file is considerably more difficult than using some sort of modern music program to make a midi. nevertheless, the porters involved in the project are all absolutely skilled enough to create accurate ports. so why does the music sound so much worse when the levels aren't that bad? well actually, I would argue that both are equally as bad. there are tons of levels where the level author barely remembered anything correctly. the difference is that a subtle change in a level is hardly obvious, whereas a single missing note or a single offkey note will be extremely noticeable. some of the levels are hilariously wrong, yet most of the comments we have received only point out the music, which is strange considering how wrong the levels are. second, porting a song 1:1 by ear to the snes is very challenging, let alone doing so by memory. I talked with one of the people who ported some of the music for this, and he explained that it's easy to get an accurate lead. but you need to think about how many channels each song has. each one must be remembered. anyone can hum the lead to the athletic theme, but there's also multiple other channels and instruments, and any of them being off will make it sound horribly wrong. in a sense, level creators have it easy, while the music creators are the ones with the far more difficult task. keep in mind this project was a pretty lowkey effort made over a couple months. we could have spent many more months perfecting the music, but no one really wanted to do that. and the third reason: improvisation. let's do a thought experiment: when a level creator is remembering a level, and then they suddenly realize they can't remember the next setup, they have 3 options: struggle to remember it to the best of their ability and get it horribly wrong, simply skip that entire part, or try to "wing it" and improvise using what they can remember about the *vibe* of the level. music is the same way. some of the music creators chose the 1st option. however, some chose the 3rd, such as the person who made the athletic theme. he forgot exactly how the song went, and rather than trying to remember it exactly and get it horribly wrong, he tried to improvise and create something different that matched what he felt the vibe of the song is. the result is a song with a bit of a unique artistic approach compared to the original. hopefully this clears some things up

I think people are just shocked by the music, since most of even the most iconic songs sound so obviously _wrong._ Like, you can tell that it isn't even close to being right. Even the most prominent melody is wrong in most cases. Maybe that's the point, though. I'd imagine that if all of the songs were as accurate as the underground theme is, the hack wouldn't be nearly as interesting. Some of them sound legitimately quite good as reimaginings of the original tunes. Overall, I think this project is a lot better than the Doom WAD that inspired it, since all of the levels are genuinely recreated from memory, unlike the Doom project which had a few people who just made their own version of the level instead of actually trying to remember it, or added random, dumb troll stuff like the Cyberdemon in E1M7.

I think worse because they've probably worked on lots of other stuff since then and might get confused with their other projects

@@kamek200 Yeah, with all the other games they have done, if they try making this one again perhaps stuff from the other ones will make their way in. Ending up in a completely different experience.

Some of those later moons can get a bit crusty. But other than that it's aight.
