I didn't know Vinny was rewinding it at first, so I thought Sponge was doomed to never die.

I just realised: in "The Ballad of Sponge", he sings that the princess left him... and now we know just how she left him. Man, no wonder the poor guy is so depressed. His only love passed away, because he couldn't come to her rescue fast enough. Broken is he deep inside indeed.

Vinny: why does this character exist? sponge: I have been asking myself that for years.

This was the Mushroom Kingdom before Sponge had came in. The thing is, he *soaks sadness from the areas he goes.*

Instead of Super Mario Sunshine, we instead get Super Sponge Overcast or something like that.

Whoa i just realized, the negative world is just sponge trying to kill himself, therefore, vinny rewinding was preventing sponge from have peace.

Dude...the minus world is sponge killing himself. He gave up and was surrounded by sadness. This game needs to be part of his lore.

The sequel will be called Super Sponge Bros: Surrounded by Sadness

We need Super Sponge Kart with playable characters being Sponge, Pretzel, Mario, Luigi, Walrus, Bonzi Buddy, Skeletor and Donkey Kong. Everything is depressing... And the karts would look rigged up. Yes indeed. Would be the best kart racer of the century. And for this game here, Super Sponge Bros., 10/10 would sad again.

The water theme remix is fantastic. Very melancholy. Sounds like an NES version of something you'd hear in a Woody Allen movie.

Why does Vinny hate the Sponge character so much? As a writer, I actually love the depth behind Sponge. I find him really interesting and he's my favourite Mii on Vineland Island. When I saw this video get uploaded, I was so happy! Sponge is an incredibly creative character, Vinny should be proud. As for Pretzel, I'm sure the fandom could do something with his character, too.

This game is my life in a nutshell.

Maybe the princess represented Sponge's only piece of happiness, and the skeleton implied that Mario had eaten that happiness. So, Sponge is now full on depressed and cannot be happy ever again.

Timeline of Sponge events: - Super Sponge Bros. _Sponge's first adventure, and his only one on the NES. Not much information is revealed about Sponge's world, but Sponge himself is introduced to us very well._ - Super Sponge World _Sponge's second adventure, and his first on the SNES. We learn more about Sponge's world and how it works, tying up that loose end from the first game._ - Mario's Mystery Meat _Sponge's second adventure on SNES, and his latest and most ambitious adventure yet. This adventure reveals how Sponge and his world ties in with Mario & Luigi in the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as that Sponge is sent out to deal with problems that Mario and Luigi are too busy to deal with at that moment._

Notice how the ground theme is the underwater theme, which maybe signifies Sponge's tears and depression, and the Underground theme has leitmotifs of the sound that plays whenever you lose a life, which represents death (ofcourse)

Between this and Super Bone Bros, 2015 has been a great year for Vinesauce Mario Bros hacks.

I see Vinny also uses Bizhawk, I can tell because the music cuts out while doing things. It's odd how under-rated that emulator is, it's really a great multi-emulator for the PC. Possibly the most usable.

I can't wait for Super Sponge Bros. 2. Sponge fighting his nightmares by throwing skulls and shit at Silent Hill-level monstrosities, and finally finding his princess, only to wake up and have her either disappear or be revealed as a long-dead corpse in a corner somewhere. Although, Super Sponge Bros.: The Lost Levels could work well also. Hell, the original Lost Levels is pretty much Super Sponge Bros. without the depressing everything.

I think it would of been cool if the ordinary SMB textures appeared behind Sponge, to sorta show that he's taking all the sad away so everyone can be happy.

What if the world Sponge is in represents him in Hell for killing himself in the real world. In Sponge's Hell, everything around him is either dead or depressed. And Mario and Luigi are in this Hell to remind Sponge of what he isn't (and for the same reason why he replaces Bowser). When Sponge was still alive, his princess killed herself before Sponge went into a depression. So in Hell, he is to go through a horrible and terrifying adventure, only to be met with his dead loved ones remains telling him how he could have saved her, so basically this creates a cycle of going through the adventure and being met with his dead princess. So Sponges' soul is restless and being tormented. R.I.P Sponge. (I don't know where Pretzel came from.)

my theory is this is sponge's dream. it looks like super mario bros because he aspires to be like mario and it's more difficult than the original because well, life is harder for him. the enemies are vineland island characters because he fears that one day they'll reject and hate him. they tell him no princess will never love him because he believes that's true, that he doesn't deserve love. the princess being dead is because she really did die in real life and sponge feels guilt he couldn't do anything to save her

2:18 Well that was fuckin' terrifying. My sound for the video apparently cut out with a small noise before a short earrape played. "ERR" Thought it was a video thing, but Vinny didn't immediately comment so I backed the video up and the audio's back.
