Genset weighs 9200lbs, built march 1940 for the Navy, shipped to Torpedo Station, Goat Island, Newport, Rhode Island as backup electric power at the Navy torpedo factory and research center. Its 230 volt, 3 Ph., 66kw. The engine is the same as a Cat D8 tractor at that time. This one is rated 120 hp @ 921rpm. Its got original Cat, Navy Board Of Ordnance and Torpedo Station I.D. tags. It shows 8600 hours and I don't think its ever been overhauled. It's has about 15 parts that were chrome plated by its Navel caretakers back in the day. I hauled it out to power wash it and paint "Navy Gray and make Under Way." thanks 4 looking. heres another vintage Caterpillar refurb i just finished up. • Pony start , Hot Rod L...

That little puffing will stop, at most one or two injectors most likely are a little gummed up. Once that engine fully warms up and a good load is placed on the generator the engine will clear up. You can also bleed each injector individually for any trapped air.

The early CAT engines were low compression. Because of low compression they would not start until warmed up. The pony motor should have been run for at least 10 minutes before using it to turn over the main engine. The main engine would start immediately. Why wear out the starting gears??? Remember, the pony motor is used to also warm up the main engine.

@Wingnut353
@Wingnut353 7 лет назад
The conversion would be 120Hp*745.7Watts/Hp=89484 Watts Obviously its not a 100% efficient conversion from rotational work to electricity and it probably isn't designed to run at peak but some percentage below that for continuous operation. So yeah around 72,000 watts (I just noticed you replied correcting yourself below after I wrote this)

Caterpillar didn’t use anyone’s proven design of combustion chamber and injection equipment , as they designed their own . as a result the engines couldn’t be started by hand or electric . The only way to start them was with another engine . The large engines like this one have a small steel disc bolted in the middle of the piston crown . This was to stop it burning a hole in the top of the piston , due to poor combustion . Caterpillar lost a few good engineers over their stubbornness to change . It was the Japanese that finally booted them into the 21st century . If only they had used a somebody else’s patent like freeman sanders or Harry Ricardo’s patents , there would’ve been no competition as these engines are very well built , and they had the market captured .
@jaswmclark

It should also be noted that Caterpillar hired Swiss watch makers to machine the finely fitted parts of the fuel pumps and injectors.

Not enough water is moving during starting to prevent the pony from overheating

coolant only flows when the pony is turning over the diesel engine. when u first start the pony and warming it up, it is not turning over the d-engine. the diesel engine has the only coolant pump on this machine, if its not turning over it ain't pumping.
