While out on a weekend garage sale shopping day. l came across a small repair shop ran out of a garage that was closing up shop. the owner was removing tools from this box and putting them on a tarp for sale. l asked if the box was for sale and he said yes for $100. l paid the man and picked it up the next day, now it is time to return it to its original glory,

I bought my Snap On box in 1968- it is still full of tools and special items many of which haven't been used in decades. All my drawers still work like new and I still have the pair of spring release tools to remove them. Watching this video got me thinking about emptying the drawers and cleaning out the box and re-organizing things, but I thought naah I know exactly which drawer to open for whatever I need, so just leave well enough alone.

Well I bought my KRA680 in about 1988 and I had a 1” thick black granite top made for it and it too is full of tools some that I also have not used in years however I’ve been through many sets of drawer slides(that you can’t get any longer!) and they do not open like new! The good thing is I don’t have to or want to buy Snap On tools anymore!

Tool salesmen are terrible. If you don't owe them money, they push very hard to sell you something. If you do owe the money, they push very hard to collect the money. After many years I figured out if I owe the guy a dollar or two it would be too small of amount for him to bother me about paying him and enough on the books that he didn't try to sell me anymore . 😊😊😊

My Grandad used to do a bit of gardening and add jobs for a rich business man. One day, as he arrived, the business man, as he was leaving said, don't bother with the garden can you paint the porch today, the paint, brushes, everything is in the garage. As my grandad was leaving the business man returned and asked if he got the porch painted? He said yes, but it's not a porch it's a Ferrari!! An old joke I was reminded of, when spraying close to cars was mentioned.

30 year aircraft mechanic here. I've never seen that type of box at the airport. Also never seen a Snap On box without roller slides. You've found that Snap On tools aren't really lifetime warranty anymore. Not worth the excessively high price buying brand new in my opinion. Rolling a medium size box full of tools out to the airplane can suck. A bigger box can be almost impossible even with good wheels. I've seen a tow bar attached to a couple of the massive boxes owned by old school mechanics. Going out on the ramp from the hangar where the boxes are stored can create problems because some hangars have tracks for the hangar doors. I've seen boxes tip over while crossing the tracks. Most of us older guys with a ton (literally) of tools have a main box and smaller work cart. Put the tools needed for the particular job in the work cart and roll it to the aircraft. You generally don't need all your tools at once- just a few. Great channel.

Hi Darren. Nice score and restore on the Snap-On toolbox. In my area a box of a similar size is selling for $600-$1000. Surprised though that you didn't try picking the old cabinet lock. They are usually pretty simple 4 or 5 tumbler locks and you can pick them with any small flat metal strip, like a nail file. Just slide it in and jiggle it around while twisting.

I have 2 of these KR-562A boxes. I looked for one for 2 years, and then suddenly found 2 at the same time-bought them both. I use them in a very large pole barn to bring the tools to the work. I used a salvaged piced of bowling alley for the top and bolted a nice vice to it. Many of these came with a foot brake and a 'hitch' in front- they were designed to be pulled with a tug around the airport. I only wish they came with ball bearing drawer slides...

I fought with replacement lock cylinders 12 years ago when I got a free Craftsman tool chest set. They are definitely a pain in the butt to replace!

Hey Mustie. I use mud flaps from semi trailers as benchtop covers. Works great. I have been using them for years.

As a 50 year auto tech I always had a roll around tool cart. Most of them were bottom sections. I would load them up with tools for brakes, tires and engines tools I knew I always used. They worked great for tire rotations because I would set the first wheel on the cart and rotate the next tire never having to bend down and pick up a wheel. Put black drawer liners in. I used to use tar paper. Make flats on the rod ends you cut.

If you were ever a professional mechanic you always wanted a Snap On tool box. I could never swing it but I still want one and I hung up my pro hat years ago.

Painters trick, when using red paint with a primer base coat. Try to use dark gray primer or red primer to give the red a jump start to covering..But most important is sanding to give tooth to coating and cleaning so as to not have any contaminants like oil, grease, silicone you get the idea. First coat is always light, a tack coat, second coat full. Overall Mustie did pretty good.

I bought my Snap On top box back in '63 or '64. Still use it today, but the drawer slides are pitiful if used for heavy tools. Bought my son a nice looking box from HF in about '07 it is okay, but the roller slides are flimsy to put it politely. Bought a recent smaller tech box from HF just recently and it is much better, but the prices are worse. You made that box look better than new. Shame the slides would cost so much to upgrade.

I think I would mount butcher block to the top and put your vise where it's more useful

I've got an old oak table top in my garage that would go perfectly on top of that box... Shame I'm several thousand miles away... That floor mat looks great though... 👍 🇬🇧

Too bad they’re not ball bearing slides. I didn’t think snap on was so “bendy”.

Funny about the "memory lane" bit at the end; the little 4 1/2" Craftsman vice was exactly like Dad's on the wooden shop bench in my day; seeing it brought back many memories.
