In this video we restore a vintage brass petrol / gasoline blowtorch by the Swedish maker Max Sievert. We use a lot of macro photography to bring you, in beautiful close up detail, the item being restored. Now, we know some people just love the sound of their own voices, it seems young Max couldn't get enough of seeing his own name printed on his great work, see how many times you can count it stamped on the blow lamp.
During the course of the restoration we discover that all the fibre and leather washers have perished and need replacing, so we make some new ones using leather punches.
Because the body and most of the working parts are made of brass everything is first placed in a bath of distilled vinegar to start the cleaning process, after this all the bits are placed in an ultra sonic bath to further clean them before any metal polishing starts. At Restore and Make we're very keen to start with the least invasive processes first to avoid abrading away the history of the pieces we restore.
When the Brasso metal polish seems that it will take an age to finish the project DIY Dave uses an old trick learnt from his old pal Aladdin and summons up a genie who grants his wish of an Axminster AC150BB buffing machine.
Some of the small retaining nuts were impossible to replace although they certainly need it, if anyone knows the specific sizes of these please let us know, either in the comments or by email.
The video took so long to produce that there wasn't enough time to film the blow torch being lit so a separate video will be made of that soon.
