In this video we restore a vintage brass petrol / gasoline blowtorch by the Swedish maker Max Sievert. We use a lot of macro photography to bring you, in beautiful close up detail, the item being restored. Now, we know some people just love the sound of their own voices, it seems young Max couldn't get enough of seeing his own name printed on his great work, see how many times you can count it stamped on the blow lamp.
During the course of the restoration we discover that all the fibre and leather washers have perished and need replacing, so we make some new ones using leather punches.
Because the body and most of the working parts are made of brass everything is first placed in a bath of distilled vinegar to start the cleaning process, after this all the bits are placed in an ultra sonic bath to further clean them before any metal polishing starts. At Restore and Make we're very keen to start with the least invasive processes first to avoid abrading away the history of the pieces we restore.
When the Brasso metal polish seems that it will take an age to finish the project DIY Dave uses an old trick learnt from his old pal Aladdin and summons up a genie who grants his wish of an Axminster AC150BB buffing machine.
Some of the small retaining nuts were impossible to replace although they certainly need it, if anyone knows the specific sizes of these please let us know, either in the comments or by email.
The video took so long to produce that there wasn't enough time to film the blow torch being lit so a separate video will be made of that soon.
If you enjoyed the video please like and subscribe to help us grow the channel and bring you more of the tool restoration, bushcraft and general making videos you enjoy watching.
You might like to help support the channel by visiting our merchandise store where you can purchase many DIY Dave items including the mug featured in this video.
We hope this practical demonstration of how to repair and restore a vintage tool will help to teach you all the processes involved in a restoration project, help to learn new skills and give you the confidence to practice them yourself.

Nice but I wish you would have polished the top handle strap to the body. And if there wasn't enough material to do that, make a new strap part. The pitted one doesn't fit the polished torch, in my opinion... Looks out of place. However, Thumbs Up!

Hi Gary, thank you for your comment, I'm glad you liked the video, I understand what you mean but I quite liked the authentic texture of the part and the contrast with the other shiny parts👍😊

Wonder if Siebert still could provide parts for this torch. I have the same model which I want to restore.

Hi enterBJ40, thanks for your great comment, from my research Sievert only do modern spares, if anybody has more information I'd love to hear about it👍😊

Hi n oakley, thanks for the kind comment and thank you for your feedback, this video has taken so long I've fallen behind schedule, there's a couple of short bushcraft vids on their way then hopefully the knife build using the forge👍😊
