Man, when I accidentally stumbled across a video that had this game (it was in a vid that showed other ports of Pac-Man other than the original arcade game), those sounds are OBNOXIOUS. The ghosts sound like a fire truck's sirens going off. Thank heavens I don't have this in my apartment...it wouldn't be the ideal game to have in the apartment to scratch that Pac-Man itch late at night. If I had this going off at my old apartment in Albion, NY, no doubt that the snarky landlady who was my WORST NIGHTMARE towards the last couple months I lived at that place would've cooked my goose pretty damn well. I just thank my lucky stars at the apartment I currently live in over in Medina, NY that I don't have a mean landlady, but I'm still not taking any risks to get the dreaded eviction notice.
I had one of these back in the day! Actually, I still have it, but it is in rough shape! I got it when I was 6, and I am almost 40 now. It had multiple game modes. Bam Bamm, I was a super poor kid growing up, but my parent scratched together the money for this for Christmas when I was 6. I wore this thing out and drove them up the wall with the noise. lol
What a fuss that thing makes! lol That's 80's technology for ya. I guess they did the best that they could with getting it as close to the actual upright arcade game as much as possible.
Great clip. I had that unit decades ago. The graphics/sound were just as I remember it. I think the first time I saw Pac-Man was at GC Murphy's at PG Plaza (MD). After that I got all the stuff - lunch box, Trapper, notepad, etc. Had to eat the sugary cereal/watch cartoon at my buddy's house since they were forbidden in my home. The irony was his father was a pastor. LOL
Only rich kids had these back in the day. You can see one in the back of the car in the movie 'Vacation', as the Griswold's are on their quest to get to Walley World.
What do you expect from and lcd tabletop game? Where you expecting it to be like the Gameboy Version? Technology wasn't that advanced in 1981 (for tiny things like these). Plus, The Pac-Men in the ghosts are like to fill the color which can tell you when they are edible or not. And it has a 2 player mode called "Head to Head Pac-Man".
+Robert White i didn't expect it to be like the gameboy version. I just expected it to look a bit better. This was made around the time when the game and watch existed. It had better sound that wouldn't hurt my ears. Plus the game & watch was quieter. The graphics, I'm fine with. Two years ago, when i made the comment above, I think that it sucked, and there was nothing good about it. Also, I realized back then that they weren't able to make it more like the gameboy version due to the time when it was made. I even thought the head to head Pac-Man was awesome, and I still do. Today, i still think it could at least sound better.
Right, The sound is annoying. But the Ms. Pac-Man version is less to me. Probably sound on my Ms Pac-Man is not that good but hey, that one has fruit and multiple stages and the 2 player mode. But if you wanted a better 2 player Ms. Pac-Man, Get the SNES or Sega Genesis (Megadrive) Version. Also i made an error as well. VFD (vacuum florescent display) not LCD (liquid crystal display).
Its ok you were not born yet to understand what this is. There were stacks of these by the registers they were hot in 1981 Pacman has only made a come back for you. bet you dint know there were pacman machines at every corner in the city.
Pac-Man fever was all the rage in 1981-3. Kids would play anything resembling it: maze-with-dots games, board games, Atari 2600. Interesting to see the two-player co-op mode. They said 2-player alternate mode took up precious memory in the 2600 since it had to store the other player's screen and score. Maybe they should have made it co-op, but they didn't care any more at Atari in 1982. I think the arcade came out in 1981, but the home versions were 1982.
