Miniaturist Journal 94. It's pizza night! But I need a cutting board for my delicious pizza, so...I'll make one. What, one? How about ten?
How to make them, how to age them and how to make a rope. In miniature of course.
And oh, I said calipers, I meant drafting compass.
Miniaturist Journal is a record of my activities, experiences, thoughts and observations in vlog form, all relating to miniatures.

I love your cutting boards. The first one that you made reminds me of an old match box, for wooden matches, that was on a wall in my grandparents kitchen, it was to light the wood stove with.

I think my grandparents had something like that in their old kitchen too. I vaguely remember it having long matches in it. I'll have to ask my mother about it, she'll know. Thanks Cathy! 😃

Great video, as always. I liked the way you used watercolor to add to the patina of your cutting boards. And your rope technique with the quilting thread was awesome

Love the bread boards, I'll have to make some. Wish I was handier with the jewelry saw, like everything else, it takes practice. The first one you made reminded me of the one my parents had and brought over. They had it for years, it was just the right size for a loaf of bread. Thank you for sharing. 🍞
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
You're welcome! Yes, it takes a bit of practice. The best thing to do if you're not too confident is to stay away from the line a bit. You can always sand to the line. Hold the saw not too tight, keep it upright, not leaning (left, right, forward or back) and try to make slow even strokes. Don't push, let the saw do the work. And then, the more you use it, the better you'll get at it, as you said, like everything else. I've seen some of your other work so I know you can do this. Thanks Urbania! 😃

Love a chopping board that shows its age! When you were preparing the round one and had the twos circle drawn, it reminded me of the ‘vintage’ ones from the 50s which had a bevelled or routered edge which was painted light green, so iconic of the era. Ah memories……

Yes, old chopping boards are great! I don't know the chopping boards you mentioned. Are they American?
@coby9896

@@MakeMiniaturesThey were referred to as bread cutting boards here in Australia. Probably much older than the 50’s and often had the word ‘bread’ carved on the top edge. There are examples on eBay from the UK. The jadeite colour was a popular colour for kitchens utensils during those days.

I enjoyed this video very much, because it is something I could do. My brother did that “bug juice” technique years ago to replace some new lumber on our late Parents old fence. He didn’t want the new lumber to stand out. He aged it so it blended in with the old fence our Father had built 66 years previously. It worked like a charm! I liked learning the rope technique too. Thank you!
@MakeMiniatures

That's a great idea! I've just been fixing some fences today in my real garden and the new posts and wood do stand out quite a bit. I'll have to make a large pot of it. Thank you so much! 😃

I made some from a wooden 'venetian blind'. The wood is fine and hard and straight with fine grain and if you buy an old blind there is masses of it ! It does have to be sanded as there is a factory finish on the wood that doesn't take stain. I made quite a lot of furniture with it especially book shelves and even did some wooden flooring after cutting it into strips. xo
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
They are such a great source of thin, fine wood! I have kept my own old wooden blinds but I always forget about them as they are in the attic of my workshop (I don't go there very often). Like you, I have also made a floor from them. The floor in the main bedroom of my first canal house was made from the slats of my blinds. Getting that factory finish off was a bit of a pain. Now that you mentioned bookshelves...the bookshelves in the library of my first canal house were also made from those blinds. They have the perfect width for bookshelves. Thanks Stephanie! 😃

Absolutely amazing! I am constantly blown away by your skill and your eye for detail! I would love to hang out in that tiny living room and eat that beautiful food and watch a movie😂 It’s really incredible how you made all of those different cutting boards in different sizes and shapes and colors. They’re so beautiful! I love the round one for the pizza and the one where you put the cut marks in. Such a simple thing, but such a transformation! It takes it from “a beautiful miniature cutting board” to a cutting board. I don’t know if that makes sense, it’s just the transformation from some thing that is tiny and small and beautiful to something that looks exactly the way it should in real life. Thank you for another fascinating video!

Lovely cutting boards. Thank you for sharing so many wonderful techniques. I too wonder how you cut the wood thinner? Thank you so much.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
You are so welcome! I cut the wood in half using my band saw, then thinned it on my thickness sander. I realize that most people don't have these machines. You could do it by hand, it's just a lot more work. Or find a piece of wood that has the right thickness to begin with. 😉 It does show that with just a tiny piece of wood, let's say 2.5 x 4 cm, you can already make a cutting board. Thank you Dixie! 😃

Thank you. What a wonderful video. Great reminder on how to ebonize wood. Fun to play with. I love the water color technique. When you wet wood, it raises the grain so it's probably best to wet, let dry and then sand down. Follow with watercolor stain. Wonderful video.
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
Thank you Tara! Yes, water or water-based finishes do raise the grain of the wood. I wouldn't use watercolour on very fine pieces of furniture but in this case where I wanted an old, worn look, it worked beautifully! And yes, I did sand 😉 😃

Your cutting boards are perfect and inspiring. Thank you for showing the watercolor technique. I have stains and oils but I never thought of watercolor. It's much more natural.

Beautiful cutting boards! Did you use your table saw to cut the wood piece to the 2.7 mm thickness?
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much! No, my blade doesn't go up that high. Although I probably could have done it if I turned it over and made a second cut. But in this case I used my band saw and then my thickness sander. 😃

Real cutting boards need to be oiled. Will you be oiling these?
@MakeMiniatures
@MakeMiniatures 3 месяца назад
No, I won't. I tried a test piece but didn't like the colour in the end. As these don't get used I think they'll be fine without the oil. I'll experiment some more, maybe with other wood. I think fruitwood or walnut will look fantastic with some oil on it. 😃
