The world's first tube based drum machine, the 1959 Wurlitzer Sideman. We had the privilege of restoring and sampling this beautiful, unique piece of machinery. Learn more at www.circlesdrumsamples.com/drummachine
1:09 like the Heart Of Glass intro but slowed down. It's an amazing drum machine and the later transistor based drum machines in the 60's/70's sounded similar.
Listen to Bjork's song "Crabcraft" and LCD Sound System's "Losing My Edge" to see that the background beat was influenced by this vintage machine. Great songs!
Looks like you cleaned this one up pretty good! I may or may not have made a 10 part instructional video about how sideman works: ru-vid.com/group/PLx84GrvFbmLMFhWtudalQ_j7KHH9bccb6 I have two now. One that was built in Germany before Wurlitzer moved to USA and one from the US. The german one is a lot better built but I love them both anyway!!!
Rhythmate was not commercially produced and used tape loops of recordings of drums - an important distinction. This unit is completely tube based and uses no tape. Many people argue over which one counts as the first.
this one uses a literal loop of a circuit board a an important similarity ;) tube vs tape vs sample have no distinction over what makes something a drum machine. If you are defining the importance of it not being a loop to be a drum machine then you have to go all the way to the first programable one. also a source en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_machine none the less this is a great video but its not the first drum machine.
I think he was referring to the fact that the tapes contained recordings of drum sounds from an external source, while this one is generates the drum sounds through its circuitry.
yes thats exactly what they are saying but a drum machine can have recorded/sampled drums. I do not think the distinction of this one synthesizing sounds that sounds makes this a drum machine and the other not. The both functions as a music box would. Circuitry spinning = tape spining.
