After spending a few weeks knitting a vintage sweater, mittens, socks and ski bonnet - I'm finally ready to put this gear to the test in freezing weather! I've never cross-country skied before, but I'm excited to give it a shot. What do you think? is it warm enough in 26F -3C?

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

I think the knitting needles in the hair is a must. It's just a logical temporary storage place. Why do we get all this hair, if it can't even hold some knitting needles/crochet hooks for us? 😂 The complete vintage set is just so perfect! You really look very warm and cozy. The double fold front of the bonnet seems really logical in such cold temps. I can see how adding a scarf or cowl of some kind would be a beneficial addition to the ensemble. Thank you for sharing it all with us ❤️

Glad to see I'm not the only one who looks like an echidna while knitting. I must admit yesterday I was knitting in the morning and then cutting out a dress pattern, so I had a cable needle in my hair, an awl shoved into my bun, and a roll of masking tape around my bun.... Us crafters are the epitome of fashion doyennes.

This set is so beautiful!! I really wish I could look this cute during winter, but I live in lapland where at best it's -30c, so this set just wouldn't cut it lol.

When I do the conversion from round to flat in the sleeves, instead of binding off X stitches at the beginning and X stitches at the end of the round, I bind off X stitches at the end of the previous round and keep binding off X stitches more at the beginning of the next round. This way I bind off all stitches in one go. Then I knit the remaining stitches, keeping the same direction, and turn the work when I reach the last stitch not binded off.

I love the ski pants! The fit is really nice; I find modern snow pants to be too tight. I might have to search for a vintage pair!

Cross country skiing makes me heat up from the exertion. I usually end up thinking i have too many layers once i get going. You look so good in your vintage outfit!

I don't have interchangeable needles but that tip about switching one side to get flat-worked tension right is such a good one! I also really appreciate how much I learned about fixing mistakes from this series -- I've definitely knit two left mittens before, too! Thanks for making this series.

It is an extremely beautiful set but I remember when I started cross-country skiing some 50 years ago I actually wore woolens because it was in the 70s and functional fibers came out much later. I hated it. When you use the correct technique for skiing which is more like pushing yourself on a scooter than like walking, not only are you much faster but your pulse rises to running levels. I always got dripping wet. I always got freezing cold when I went downhill and I always caught a UTI. While I wear 100% wool sweaters most of the time in winter, I give a shoutout for modern functional outdoor wear, as it is really a game changer. It is wonderful to charge uphill and arrive being - dry!

I love how it ended up looking! Next time I’m going skiing I’ll try wear a wool jumper instead of a ski jacket. I usually just wear a thin wool inner layer with an outer layer of a wind resistant material that is super thin as well. I think it’s mostly warm because of the air that gets trapped and warmed up because of the layers being a bit loose, and the same seems to be the case here as well.

I recently worked some sleeves in the round to attach to fronts and a back (for a cardigan) that had been worked on the flat. I had cast off 10 stitches at the armhole edges of the flat bits, so each armhole had 10 stitches cast off for the back part and 10 stitches cast off for the front part. When it came to the sleeves I only cast off 18 stitches, to allow for the fact that a little bit of the casting off on the flat pieces is "lost" to them being sewn together. (Yes, the wool is very fine, hence the 10 stitches being cast off.)

So fun to the the whole ensemble finished! 🤩 I'm from Norway and it's been real fun to follow along with your research, specially when I was sat in my Hemsedalskofte 😄 I'm going out to skate soon in -10°C (14 F) and I'm basicly following the same set up as you in this video! I doubble up on the inner wool layer, vintage sweater on top, wool hat and mittens, thinner wool socks to fit in the skates and a modern pair of trouser to handle the wind and falls 😆 It's been so fun following you these last years, and I'm so excited to see what you get up to in the new year! Whishing you all the best! 🙌🙌

I am very envious of your warm ears right now 😂 I got new cartilage piercings a couple days ago, so I can't wear hats, and today the high was 26 and Really Windy. Not fun. Even for the short trek to my car. If I have to do any field work, I'm gonna have to work out some sort of contraption of clean handkerchiefs to protect the piercings so I can swath my head in a scarf. Brrr

I made my vary first knit sweater last year with the intention of cross crontry skiing in it, however theres been no snow! In the mean time ive been biking in my knits. I have a pair of colorwork bulky knit mittens witch are great, I can through thin mountain biking gloves under if its particularly windy or below freezing. Normally I would where just the thin mountain biking gloves for X country skiing. My sweater color work aran weight on 4.5mm needles works great for biking until 50 degrees below that I through a wind breacker over top. I have knit socks but I don't really like wearing them there not much warmer than a pair of smart wools and I can feel the stiches biting into the soles of my feet. I don't know what would inprove my socks. I have to many knit hats its a balence of hair and layers of knit fabric. I think 2 layers of knit fabric is ideal and your bonnet looks lovely. Its lovely to see someone cross country skiing, to see somesnow on the ground somewhere, and see how well your knits work.

Don’t put gloves under your mitts, put thinner mittens. When you separate your fingers in gloves, they lose the ability to share warmth. Your outfit is awesome!😊
