I remember the first one and being amazed by the aliens. It was my first memory of begging. And the following Christmas was a Christmas to remember.

Great video, lots of memories from 1978. In my small town all the kids would gather at the local toy store waiting for them to unload the new figures so we could spend our allowance. I remember sorting throw the stands looking for the ones I needed.

Before the SW action figures and other toys... it was the Topps cards and stickers. The box display was shredded within days.

I had a Hills Dept store in my area back in the 80's,and they would have a employee open up toys and make diorama's... It was awesome and a very good way to sell toys.lol

80‘s kid from Germany here: the most iconic shop display for me was the Darth Vader head with glowing red eyes and all the figures you craved for hanging on pegs beneath it. Spent hours with my friends before it…

As recently as 2011, I remember working at Walmart and they would actually auction off the toy displays to employees. Now, they all have to be destroyed unless you have some inside connection, but you are still risking your job if you are seen taking one of the displays home. I’m not sure why the policy changed.
@joes9954
@joes9954 2 года назад
It changed simply for control. Many companies have gone this way especially Disney and they are contractually obligated to destroy the displays because they know they will go for stupid money on the collectors market and the snowflake employees that did not get one will whine and cry and go to HR and it simply isn’t worth the grief. A former company of mine used to give away or sell for cheap old IT equipment until a few sad employees raised a stink and put a stop to that. This is why we cannot have fun anymore.

The movie theatre in Papillion, Nebraska had one of the Empire Strikes Back hang displays in it selling action figures when I was a kid. AND, I also remember one of those 'whistling' lfe savrebes but mine had to be a little older than the display you show as mine was Jedi Luke green.

Great video junkman. I'm from germany and I remember when I was a kid our toystore had a Star Wars display with a large black plastic Darth Vader head on top of it. It was more like a bust with head, shoulders and breastplate. Behind that bust was a light bulb that let the eyes of Darth Vader glow red. As a kid I found this was very impressive. From time to time they show up on ebay for 600 Euros or so.

@ganimed1976: greetings to cologne from Munich! Still avid collector but couldn‘t bring myself up to spending 600€ on a Darth store display on eBay 😄
@ganimed1976
@ganimed1976 2 года назад
@@j.t.w.7985 These Darth Vader Displays remind me in those Darth Vader figures carrying cases. Except of the red translucent eyes the displays were very similar in size and design. But around 600 euros is a bit too much for me personally for such a store display, as I hardly have any figures on cards. I actually only collect loose SW figures and toys.

The only ones I recall were from Empire: Lightsaber display (and it was everywhere), AT-AT cardboard display. I don't ever recall the department stores have any of those figure displays... think they used their own shelf space. I can only imagine how much those Power of the Force displays go for. You need a part two tying with fast food joints and other merchandise. My favorite piece I own is the Cloud City hanging mobile promoting the glasses for Burger King

More…MORE!! lol and yes I remember most of these. I was living in Loveland, Ohio from 1974-1994. (Just north of Cincinnati) My friend’s father was working at Kenner at the time. He got all the prototypes and unreleased stuff. (Boba Fett-rocket firing 1978) He also had some of these displays in his basement. (They were shrink wrapped, folded, ready to hand over to stores)

I saw zero store displays up here in Canada. I guess the figures moved so fast that they saved money and would have constantly had 3/4 empty displays. It also would have highlighted the fact that they usually had very few figures to choose from...many multiples of the same hand full of characters was often what you saw.

The Toys R Us I went to as a kid just had peg boards with header cards. Not very exciting but I clearly remember every Saturday when I got my allowance going there and looking through each and every one to make sure there wasn't a good one hiding in the back. I also remember getting Boba Fett in the mail away. It came in the little white box and took like 6-8 weeks to get it, and in kid time that seemed like a year.
