Vintage Mego looks at Mego's brief James Bond toy line, based on the 1979 film "Moonraker". It is a toy line that had an incredibly short life and we explore the many items that never made it to market as well.

I bought the Jaws and Bond figures in Australia circa 1981 but they were from a market stall not a regular retail outlet. They had a stack of them and I remember they were $4 each.

@@BrickMantooth I figure that because I never saw them at retail and the fact that it was a few years after their initial release that the seller may have got them from a discount wholesale importer and not from the regular licensed local distributor

James Bond wasn't really a 'kid' thing, and adults didn't buy "toys" back then. Couldn't imagine anyone wanting these when they came out, but I'll take 'em now !

Well I was a big James Bond fan kid. Saw all the late 70 and early 80 movies in theater. Watched avidly all the older ones on TV. And my friends were big fans too. "The spy who loved me" and "Moonraker" remain my 2 best. I know a lot of people didn't like Moore as much but for my generation he was the one. Thx

I loved Moonraker as a kid. Its over the top combination of space shuttles, laser wielding space marines, crazy gadgets and end of the world stakes fit right in with all the other sci-fi movies I was watching at the time. The only toy from the movie I had was the Corgi space shuttle & helicopter combo pack. I don't think I was even aware that the 12" figures existed.

Derek Meddings (who previously had created the effects for TV shows like 'Stingray', 'Thunderbirds', and 'Captain Scarlet'), often used 'Action Man' figures in models, because of their toughness, and ease of poseability. Meddings was a genius.

Never saw any of these figures here in the UK, or saw them advertised anywhere. I did have (and still do) have the Corgi Moonraker Shuttle, as well as the Airfix kit of it, and, possibly best of all, the 'Lone Star' toy version of the laser gun. I don't have that anymore - it 'vanished' with a lot of other stuff after I left home in the mid 1980's. I do still have the movie programme booklet, and a set of cinema lobby cards, and the annual. No figures, though. Damn I want 3.75" James Bond figures now! 😆😆😆

I really liked this video, mainly for personal reasons, because Moonraker in 1979 was my first Bond movie I saw in the local cinema. I wasn't aware there had been a Mego James Bond toy line until a few years ago, and this is the first time I've seen the Drax and Holly figures as well. The Derek Meddings "Action Man" photo is a gem, and now I know the astronauts are action men, i'm never going to be able to look at that sequence in quite the same light again :) Happy New Year btw, and thanks for continuing to do these brilliant videos!

If you look at the end of the previous Bond film 'The Spy Who Loved Me' it says James Bond will return in 'For Your Eyes Only'. Such was the desperation of the producers to get on the Star Wars band wagon they ditched it for the only Fleming title that sounded 'spacey' with 'For Your Eyes Only' eventually following 'Moonraker'. After the absurdness of this one they went back to a simple spy story in FYEO and we got that great Citroen CV5 die cast.

Really gutted about discovering that they planned 3 3/4" figures and vehicles. Would've been all over that Jet Boat! Bond still seems like such and under-used license. I think 3 3/4" or 4" figures today would sell like proverbial gangbusters. Round 2 has the model kit license...basically rebranding already existing molds. They did just reissue a Lindberg shuttle kit with new Moonraker decals...

I really like the line. Now something new to search for. That Jaws is a must have some day the Drax is cool as well the villians are the best in these old 70's movies. The guy with the metal hand in Live and let die is great. I wonder if these could be done now in a James Bond line with the monsters and star trek stuff they might sell now better than back then.

I have only a few other Moonraker items like the Topps cards, the soundtrack LP (I love the Shirley Bassey theme song), movie program, View Master set, a poster, and some Spanish playing cards. I've always wondered why a toy company doesn't secure the Bond license and do a whole 3.75" line. So many characters like Bond and Jaws, Blofeld and Odd Job, Goldfinger and more. Do SPECTRE like Cobra from GIJoe and have tons of henchmen and crazy spy vehicles and hidden bases. There always seemed to be so much potential here that was never mined. I know that Bond has always been more adult in nature (and a Pussy Galore fashion doll isn't a good idea no matter who says it is) but take the toyetic elements of the Bond spy universe and build it into something that could have a long life with years of additional characters, missions and vehicles.
@BrickMantooth
@BrickMantooth 3 года назад
My best understanding is that Eon associates Bond with pricier items now. So if you want to sell a $300 statue or expensive vodka they're in. If you want to sell toys for under $20, it's not as interesting to them.

@jasonknight8581
@jasonknight8581 3 года назад
I can actually see that. Each Bond would be their own wave: The Connery wave could be him, Blofeld, Oddjob, Goldfinger, and Pussy Galore. The Moore wave would be him, Jaws, Scaramanga, May Day, and Octopussy. The Brosnan wave would be him, Xena, Trevelyan, Wai Lin, and Zao. The Craig wave would be him, Silva, Vesper, La Chiffre, and Waltz as Blofeld. The Lazenby wave would be confined to him, Q, Moneypenny, M, and Tracy. Dalton would be a BAF stretched across the five waves as I don't really recall too much about his two movies standing out.

Jason216 we need a neca bond lines. First wave is basic versions of each bond in there tuxedos with some accessories trademarked of the actors. Ultimate versions with interchangeable torsos, with ties and bow ties, heads, hands, and accessories. Then a wave of the villains(bolfeld with a Charles grey head), girls, and maybe even a car.
