Today we’ll be focusing in on some of the dirty work - the stuff they don’t really tell you about fixing up these old gems. One - we’ll be stripping off all of the paint on pretty much every part. Gas tank, frame, swing arm, triple tree, you name it - it all has to go. For this I’ll be using Aircraft Paint Stripper. This stuff is the shit. Two - we're going to be finishing up the rebuild on the front forks, cleaning up both rims and then sending it off with a complete re-lace and truing for both wheels.
For the paint stripping I went with Aircraft Ultra Paint Remover (I got mine at O'Reilly's). This stuff is highly recommended and also highly dangerous - so make sure you’re wearing proper protection for this. First thing we have to do though is sand down all the parts - you can use anywhere from 80 - 180 grit. All you really need to do is rub down where you want to strip the paint. The trick to the paint stripper is to let it sit for at least 30 minutes. I used a paint brush to get is spread out over all of the part which worked out pretty well for me. I also ended up using a metal scraper to get the stripped paint off of the parts. One tip would be to place the parts in a bucket of water when taking the paint off. This will help keep the paint out of the way once it comes off and also stops the action of the paint stripper.
As for the rebuild of the front forks.. I bought the parts for the front fork off of amazon, link here: amzn.to/3YxBoRz. What you’ll get is the new rubber sleeve, rubber oil gasket and a new pair of springs. The one pain with putting these things back together is the metal clip that keeps the rubber oil gasket in place but once that’s in it’s a breeze. You also need to be a little bit patient with slipping over the new rubber sleeve but once that’s in place you're done! I’ll fill these up with fork oil once the build is over.
Next up - new brake pads. Big surprise here but I also bought these off of amazon, link here: amzn.to/3BJh3iy. Something to be careful of - the casted aluminum that holds the shoes are good, however I noticed on mine that they didn’t grind down on one of the fill holes. I just used a drill to get that ground down so that the brake pad fit snug. Make sure to clean out the inside of your wheel hubs so that these new brake pads just don’t go to waste.
Alright - next thing we have to do is polish up these rims. The corrosion on these rims is pretty bad in some spots. Now I spent a bit of time on these rims and did as about as much as I could with the WD-40 and steel wool to get the rust out. I ended up with just using the bench grinder on the entire rim. Even with the pitting from the corrosion they still look super good with the new spokes and the fresh tires so I’m pretty happy at the end of the day. Just wish I could go back and save all of the wasted time.
Lacing and truing the wheels took about 6 hours total for both wheel which is pretty good! I got the new spokes from two separate dealers - one on eBay and one from David Silver Spares. There are 36 spokes for each wheel and there are two sets of 18 spokes, “A” and “B” for each wheel. Basically the spokes that go in from the inside and those that go in from the outside are different. Lacing was pretty intuitive once you got the pattern down - here’s where I plug to save a picture before taking the spokes off. As far as truing goes - there are loads of great tutorials out there to true your rim, just take your time with it and you’ll get a good result. What really got me going was the radial truing - I only noticed it after I had laterally trued the rim and really just had to crack open another beer.

Cool series and well done! Even as someone who isn't doing an EV swap, but just a normal CL90 restoration, I find this series really helpful and easy to watch.

This series is amazing! I own 4 of these little bikes sitting in the back yard. I’d love to make this conversion on them. When do you think the next part of the series will drop?

@@CatchHellMoto nice! I can’t wait! Have you posted links to the power train you’re using yet?

Not yet, they're both in the next video. These are what I went with though: 2000W 48V Motor: amzn.to/3j2BHUs 20Ah 48V Battery: amzn.to/3UTdz3S Ended up going with a 2000W motor as I didn't need as much range as I originally thought. Also a fair bit cheaper as well.

@@CatchHellMoto awesome! Thanks for sending those. I’ve been spinning my wheels (pun intended) on which one would work best. So I can’t wait to see how yours turns out.
