Every one has had a go at doing a vice or axe restoration video these days so i though id be slightly different and restore a vintage ( or so im led to believe ) Woden Pipe Vise. Its not in terrible shape but it could certainly do with receiving a bit of love from the Really Random Channel.
As usual before starting the job of tearing it to bits i gave it a good assessment and got an initial game plan in my head of what i was going to do with it.
When it come to tearing it apart i will be honest i couldn't figure out how the jaw was held on at first then it dawned on me so out came the wire wheel to reveal the only logical fastening system a steel pin punched through to create a wedge.
After that was removed the jaw simply slid off and i could unscrew the handle from the main casting. Im pleased to say at this point everything looked good and perfectly reusable. Then i got to break out my new toy for smoothing out the jaw a new belt sander :) An 80 grit belt made light work of cutting through the rust and getting me back to bare steel ready for the next step.
The next step was to clean up and reshape the teeth on the jaws this took considerable time as they where in pretty poor condition. I first attacked them with the wire wheel to remove loose debris and then set about sharpening and shaping with multiple files before giving them the final edge and polish with a couple of oil stones. This left a lovely finish with a good hard edge for gripping even the slipperiest of pipes :)
The main body was next and the sand blaster go one hell of a work out removing all of the years of scale and muck but it managed just fine. Once back in bare steel i could see how rough the casting was there was horrible casting marks all over it which had been hidden with rust and paint but this is a Really Random Restoration and painting over ugly cast marks just isn't acceptable on this channel so out came the files and grinder for a second time. The results where beautiful the machined faces turned out perfectly flat and level with the markings from the filing just adding to its beauty :)
Next job on the list is just a standard paint job, etch, high build, wet flat then hit it with some awesome MAGMA RED topcoat seriously shiny and durable! Yes Woden vises should be blue but i wanted to be different so red it is!
The handle was bare steel with the screw and tip being done in hard chrome but as i dont have chrome plating facilities i done them in bright zinc electroplate which was hardened with blue passivate. for all the use this vise will get the galvanized coating will be more than tough enough. Oh is should mention the welder had to come out as there was a hole in the top of the handle for some reason so a blob of weld from the mig sorted that right out.
After all that the paint was baked and the electroplating was left to harden and then the vise was rebuilt and i got all the finishing shots as per usual before it get all beat up again making helping to make awesome projects for the channel in the future ;)
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel or would even like to donate something to restore to the channel please get in touch. :)
And as usual if you liked the video please like share and subscribe and help the channel grow.

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

I ran out of mymechanics videos to watch restorations, as I've watched them all a few times, and have been watching a few of yours a day for the last week or so. I think you both are by far the two best restoration channels on youtube. No music so it's pure, perfect tool sounds, and both of you have an eye for detail that the other restoration channels dont have. You're careful and precise with every part you breathe life into. Thanks for all the hard work bringing a lot of now non existent tools back to life. Love the honda tank too. That one is particularly gorgeous. I get the tingles seeing that beautiful paint. Thanks so much

Now that is a true restoration, two coats primer one of them a thicker one to cover and fill some blemishes, and a nice paint. All you guys who I've bashed on need to look at this job and learn from it.

Hey, I'm the geezer that suggested you could restore an old lathe or vertical milling machine, then use them on restoration bike projects. If you ever need any tips or advice on these machines, feel free to msg me as I've been a plastic injection moulding toolmaker for over 30 years. I doubt you would need any advice but it's there if you need it. Keep up the fantastic work, it's the best of it's kind I've seen on RU-vid.

You just know that with a work area like that this guy's kitchen has got to be fekkin surgical, like, open the fridge and everything is sealed in identical plastic tubs with identical laser cut labels, "Carrot - 6pc - 04/12/2018". I'd bet he doesn't have a stove, he has a computer controlled laser that cooks food without any of that distractingly random 'flame' nonsense. Open the cupboard and there are exactly eight of every single item deemed essential in an ettiquette book. Precisely eight, for any broken item requires the replacement of every itteration. "It is of no concern Mister Greaves. It is merely a sideplate. I shall simply return to the shop tomorrow and purchase a replacement dinnerware set." I mean, this guy has to be German, OCD's right there in the German genome... I see, a fellow countryman! Then, there's only one question, and one only the English will fully understand... Tetley's or 'out? Anyhoo, yes, teasing aside, subbed and liked, great stuff.

This is beautiful, I really like the difference. One thing that's sorta been on my mind with a lot of these restorations, from multiple channels. Often they're given very glossy finishes, which to my eyes makes them seem almost toy like. I'd love to see someone play around with different finishes for their restorations.
