The more I learn about power pop, the better. Been a fan of that genre since waayyyy before I knew it was power pop. Cheap Trick changed my life. Great to see you kickin' out videos, man!
Yet another stellar vid from the mighty punks not dad.. So many great suggestions to go check out.. although power pop is not really in my wheelhouse , I'm always open to checking out new things. Thanks for the great vid.. Top notch good sir!
Fuckin awesome showing the Starjets!! Totally agree big drop off once you flip the record. Subscribed and enjoying your videos! If you aren’t aware check out Critical Mass It’s inside that counts, fits this list perfectly.
Thanks for supporting me brother. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks the Starjets record is half great lol! And I totally have that Critical Mass record but wasn’t even on my radar. Might just end up in Vol 2. Thanks for the recommendation dude, cheers!
Hello Mr Bruce. Just tonight I was directed to your youtube channel and was consequently overwhelmed and excited upon discovering a fellow punk/power-pop aficionado whose vinyl collection mirrors my own and then some. The Blue Peter is terrific, as are all their subsequent releases, especially their self-titled full-length debut. I've seen the band perform live numerous times here in Toronto over the decades ( ! ) and were always fantastic. Sadly, the lead singer passed away in April 2021. I'm really enjoying your channel and am looking forward to more of them with a drink in my hand. Cheers.
Wow! Thanks a lot Alan. Your comment is very appreciated. I’ve really enjoyed making these videos and it’s people like you that make it worth while. I have Vol. 2 ready to go, I’ll post it this weekend. I have a lot of this stuff so I’ll make a couple more for sure. Thanks for watching and take care!
Thanks Mike! Yeah there’s an abundance of that type of sound. I’ll do a couple more probably. The good thing is a lot of that stuff isn’t super rare or expensive. But you always have that modernettes record that goes for around 200 now! 👀
Love both albums by the A's. The Motors' Nick Garvey produced some great tunes on their 2nd album. Love that Code Blue album. The CD version came in a blue ziploc baggie!! Man, that Dirty Looks album is a true classic - spent many hours under the headphones when I was a teen listening to that album. Oh, wow. You're only about the third person that I know that owns that album by The Gas! That Beat album is the BEST Power Pop album of all time (in my opinion)! Well, it is tied with the first 20/20 album, I guess. That Protex is great, too - I have the CD version. The Starjets album is fab (IMHO). There's a song or two i may not like as much as the others but I love it. Glad I stumbled across this vid!
Hello Stephen, glad you stopped by. Thanks for watching and this great comment. Not as big on the second A’s album but when it hits it hits. Completely agree on the other groups all great records. As far as the Gas, that’s a record I had to cough up shipping and have it sent from Germany cause I was tired of waiting on a US seller. A couple months after I got it one popped up here! 😂🤦🏻♂️ And yes it is very hard to beat the 20/20 debut but Paul Collins Beat is right there brother. Not as rocking as those bands but Shoes Pretense Tense is up there for the late 70s bands too. More pop but great songwriting. I could go on and on. Again thanks for hanging out, talk to you on the next one! 😜
Yeah I like that A’s album! Agree with you on the songs you recommended. My personal favorite being CIA. I also like Words and Artificial Love. Some of these you showed I will need to check. You my good man, earned some helluva lot respect last stream. Not that you didn’t have any before but you took the hits as they came and you stood your ground. Always fun to have you there! Enjoyed the video immensely.
Awesome Doctor! Thanks for the kind words as always. The stream is a highlight in my life. I’m still laughing about that shit. Good times man, I’ll be your huckleberry anytime. I gots that thick skin dude! 😂✌🏻
I'm with you on narrowing the timeline on PowerPop bands the earlier groups like BadFinger, Raspberries are great and I love them but to me rely more on Pop than Power and as the eighties wore on PowerPop became more Byrdsian more Beachy Boy harmony oriented, influenced more on what was happening in Athens and to broaden the style, but to my ears came out sounding like Softpop. Yes I am a little hardline. I hope you do a few more of these videos because some of your picks sound pretty cool ( also thanks for the song recommendations ). The Heats from Seattle put out a decent PowerPop record from this time called " Have an Idea" and Colombia Records released a NewWaveyPowerPop record by Jules and the Polar Bears called Fanetics my favorite song is the soft new wavey " Good Reason " and also the frantic guitar driven " Your So Complete " his voice is a little different. And a song I consider PunkyPowerPop is "Young and Dumb" by the Rubber City Rebles. Cool Video
Where do I start with this, what a great comment man! Thanks so much for your feedback, you’re on the nose with everything you’ve said. This is why I do this, I enjoy meeting new people and getting others perspectives. Nothing makes me happier than having input and talking music and bands with people I’d otherwise never meet. I was hoping with this “series” that I’d get suggestions and there have been multiple to which I’m very thankful. You mentioned 3 and 1 of those is new to me so that’s great! I do however own everything the Heats have put out and I have the Rubber City Rebels record as well. They are an Akron band so no way I’d miss them being an Ohioan myself. Seriously thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers ✌🏻
Good Morning Bruce! Im really digging having some more Punk Perspective in the VC!! Ive been a Punk fan since 1977....yeah im old!!🤣 Im a huge fan of "The Human B Side" (that name fukkin kills me!!) Anyway I always like seeing new bands and bands I've missed! I look forward to following your Channel as you develop your own personal style!!
Hey Chuck, man thanks so much for this comment. Very cool! You’re an old schooler, much respect 💪🏻. Yeah the Kidd has become a friend and really was the first person to interact with me in the VC. He’s the real deal and I can only hope to bring a similar vibe on here. Take care brother! ✌🏻
Great album after great album man. I LOVE Pointed Sticks. Perfect Youth and that compilation Waiting For The Real Thing are stellar. I was lucky enough to see them awhile ago. Protex is my favorite you showed. That band is so underrated. I got to see them too in NJ. I really like Dirty Looks, they should of been bigger. Same with the band Any Trouble. God Bless The Starjets and god bless PunksNotDad! Cheers brother
Ain’t a thing you said that’s off base dude! Protex as I said are the newest to me within the past year or so and I listen to that record a lot. I’m glad you got to see some of those bands live! Maybe I’ll throw any trouble in the next Vol. Thanks brother have a nice weekend!
Very good Scott! I wish my kick would end sometimes as I can’t get enough of it. 😂🤷🏻♂️I have Vol. 2 coming next weekend. Maybe see ya on the stream tomorrow, cheers
That’s interesting, as the term was coined by Pete Townsend to my knowledge so it’s not new. But I did say the lines are blurred! Thanks for watching Rich! ✌🏻
Hi Bruce. I’m digging your channel so far. I’m a big power pop and jangle fan! I have the A’s, Dirty Looks, Beat, Protex and of course Exploding Hearts records! I have heard of some of the others and will check out them out. If you don’t know them I encourage you to look up the Whiffs out of Kansas City a newish band that would fit the bill. Look forward to more videos. / Matt
Hey Matt! Thanks for watching and commenting it means a lot to me! I think I’ll do a couple more of these cause I really like this stuff. Yeah I’m hip to the Whiffs, don’t have either of their records but they’re in my Discogs Wantlist. Have a great day! ✌🏻
Hey Bourbon Bruce nice idea yet again your flying man. Only one I know of and like is protex but not the biggest PowerPop fan tbh majority is wanker music hahaha. Have a great weekend brother and don't let em bully you the haggis is always watching 😉
Thanks dude! Sending love to ya! I have to admit there are some stinker bands in the powerpop genre but I ain’t buying no wanker music homeboy! 😂💪🏻enjoy your weekend as well, cheers 🥃
