I'm 4th generation South African. Normally love your talks but man this was not a good analysis. The cause for the current riots is purely socio-economic. Huge chunks of our society are marginalised (70% youth unemployment for instance). These citizens were disenfranchised by the white government and have been failed by the current government. The imprisonment of Zuma was just a match to ignite this powder keg - the protestors don’t care for him one bit. Your pseudo-socialism-wokeism angle is very flawed as follows : 1. Jacob Zuma sentenced to 15 months. Not 1 month / 1 year. For reference, in his 9 year presidency it's alleged that he helped siphon off in excess of $35bn. 2. (6.40) The IFP-ANC tensions you speak of as just being a tribal issue and not race motivated is only partially true. The ruling white government purposefully played these two off against each other in order to prevent a collapse of their apartheid govt. This has been well documented. 3. You talk about 'socialism' being a leading cause of the unrest going on at the moment. The post apartheid government had to assume a welfare-state stance given the absolute high levels of poverty in the country. It is true we have far too many people on welfare at present. But simply blaming a socialist mindset is not fair - there are deep rooted issues that only a welfare state can ween us out of. 4. Our local govt post apartheid started off quite well. Up until 2008, we had high growth and employment. Poverty levels dropped and access to basic utilities increased rapidly. Zuma has been primarily responsible for much of the rot in our economy since 2009. He broke down several key institutions; placed many of his cronies in power and shamelessly stole billions. 5. And this is the crux of the unrest at the moment - we have millions of unemployed South Africans - many of them youth - who have no hope for the future and have been left behind by society and government. The arrest of Zuma was simply a trigger for unrest. 6. There was no reference in your talk to the rampant structural injustice and inequality built by the apartheid government. For instance the pathetic education system that they had for black south Africans. Or the fact that blacks and Indians were forcibly kept far away from economic hubs (and many still remain there today) 7. Over-sensationalizing the brain-drain in South Africa and the levels of crime. There are pockets of rampant crime like in other places in the world. We have lived here for decades and have had little issues (as long as we maintained street smarts). 8. There has been little material transformation. Blacks might be in power politically but the 10% of whites hold 80% of the wealth. How is that transformation ?! 9. The comment you've made re : Indians being racist is built on one or two isolated incidents. How can you make such inflammatory statements about a million plus of us here ? Indians have done yeoman work amongst the black communities for decades now. This is totally disrespectful statement. 10. You talk about the apartheid government having built something and it was simply handed over to the post-apartheid regime. Yes, the apartheid government were innovative and built a strong economy but it was an economy that only worked for the minority whites. Most blacks had no access to basic services like water and lights. 11. Finally - I get the issue with wokeness. I myself cannot stand it. But Mandela had to try and build an inclusive South Africa else there would've been absolute bloodshed here. Having an ideal of a rainbow nation was a great ideal. You can’t equate this to wokeness.

For the Africans, both Europeans and Indians are foreigners. They were politically controlled by the Whites and the Indians may have controlled trade and prospered while the Africans were impoverished. Obviously nations with really diverse populations with conflicting interests will have some kind of political upheaval. Most people are less concerned about mixed marriage than about equitable distribution of wealth; inequity fuels discontent.

Did the speaker really justify racial targeting of Indians in South Africa just because some of them (the ones he met) do not talk polite to Blacks and do not approve of inter racial marriage with them. Last time I checked, your personal experience with a handful people does not speak as main narrative or trend and marriage is a person & family's matter and using that as a reason to justify what is happening is sick. Quite an example of victim blaming.
