We have solar energy at home and we have not paid a single rupee for electricity since 2014. We run 2 ACs all summer. I live in Gujarat and the state government gave heavy subsidies back then.

Wiring kaise ki gayi hai, Agar Cloudy hai to kya Grid se energy aata hai ?
@apoorvamodak7701
@apoorvamodak7701 3 года назад
You need a roof (of course) and there will be some changes to be done to your electrical wiring. Your city will have providers for solar installations. Take a consultation from them. They will let you know if there are existing subsidies given by your state and/or central government. I don't know the cost in 2021. In 2014, we spent around 3.5-4 lakhs (including 1.5 Lakh subsidy from state and central government). The cost varies according to the consumption requirements and the number of panels you wish to install. Just 1 rider that no one usually talks about- there is a need to clean the panels every month or at least every 3 months. If there is dust on panels, energy output is drastically reduced.
@apoorvamodak7701
@apoorvamodak7701 3 года назад
There 2 ways to use the solar energy generated (speaking strictly about Gujarat state- for other states, please research). 1. Install a Ac/Dc converter so that you can get off the grid altogether. 2. To keep your electricity connection and sell the solar output to your electricity company. They pay you per unit of solar power generated. In the second option, we derive electricity from the grid but do not pay bills as the energy generated by solar covers and exceeds the electricity bill.

This has become one of my favourite channels ...also it's rare to see Abhijit being positive. Likes of Reliance,TATA,Infosys,tvs,bajaj etc. have done more for indian people than any activist ever did. There are few points to note however:- 1.Solar energy is great for india and reliance can start an entire industrial ecosystem around it. Solar energy isn't however as green as people think...mass-scale manufacturing of its components do cause environmental damage. e however can certainly ignore it since development of this sector is too important. 2.Fully-glassed balconies are mainly in high-class societies mainly because of 'status symbol' and also cos it gives a good view. Rich ppl have AC turned on all the time so design optimization for temperature is rarely concern for them. 3.Solar and nuclear both are important but the real energy source which india can harvest equally easily is Tidal energy. India is already one of the leading countries in Hydroelectric dam construction. Tidal energy plants tho a bit different operate on same principles. With sufficient investment and push from gov, it can used as a staple source of energy given India's geography. It also is more relaible and environment friendly than any other renewable source.

@@RP027 I have read this argument before and I am quite aware of German and French program. India can't solely depend upon renewable energy nor on nuclear energy alone. Cost of nuclear plants are high, gestation period high and cost of carrying elctricity is also high and ofcourse there is inherent danger associated with nuclear plants. Problem of German renewable energy is, sun is not available through out year and they have to burn biomass to generate electricity. On the contrary India has ideal position in renewable energy sun is available through out year, barren land, nonarable land, deserts are available. And secondly small independent grids can be created in small villages where power can't be supplied by conventional transmission lines.

Nuclear Energy in the US has had a NEGATIVE learning rate, i.e. levelized costs are INCREASING with time. Small Modular Reactors might change the things but there still some ways to go.

There must be optimal application of both that's nuclear energy or say the Solar Energy. The point is that our policy makers and related people don't pay appropriate attention towards the installation of nuclear power plants. Much of the kerfuffle comes on behalf of anti-science pro-commie skunks, Kudankulam project being the case in point. We can exploit the regions that are redundant in terms of agriculture etcetera and there we can install our solar energy projects easily. Whole point is the symmetrical and optimal exploitation of these both energy options to meet the demand of the mass and industries in our country.

@@stoic-999 lulz India has some of the best energy policy experts in the world. There is a reason India has the fastest growing solar power generation capacity and is a model for other nations. The panelists are talking like India is a stranger to solar not realizing we added >10 GW capacity last year alone, and are on track for atleast 30 GW more. Long way to go, but not acknowledging the current status of the industry is patently absurd and reflects a lack of knowledge. Kudankulam is 9 years old at this point. No point flogging that dead horse. It’s done, the plants are running. Nuclear simply doesn’t work economically. That is the biggest consideration RE optimal use of resources. Why waste money on nuclear when there are so many cheaper alternatives? And there is no point for the government to get into mindless financial boondoggles that end up as white elephants. Rather let the domestic solar and energy storage industry take off, which they are doing an excellent job of, but unfortunately we are largely ignorant of actual details and give generic criticisms that are not really grounded in fact. That is not to say we should abandon our nuclear power plants or that we should not invest in more R&D, but if it hasn’t happened after all these years, it is unlikely to happen now. Even the stupid thorium reactors are nowhere near completion - atleast that I’m aware of. That being said, we should do our best to ensure that existing capacity is retired in a proper manner lest we end up replacing it with coal or natural gas which will be a disaster. Ideally we should make sure that enough renewables are online before retiring older plants. But for new capacity, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to commit to 10 years of just construction when you have much cheaper alternatives. This was a particularly low-quality discussion. Someone who actually pays attention to the industry will have a remarkably different take.

A great discussion. If one makes a plot of the per capita GDP (nominal) of countries versus the installed energy capacity, there is a positive correlation between energy consumption and per capita income. In order to be referred to as developed, a country needs around 2000 MW per million of its population. This is the basic threshold. India currently only has around 287 MW per million people. In absolute terms, India needs 2800 GW instead of the 400 GW that we have now. So our energy generation capacity has to increase by 7 times. The message here cannot be starker. Follow the conclusions of Ian Morris, Vaclav Smil, Harari, etc, consume energy and develop. How soon can India achieve this and what are the costs involved? Between 2005 and 2015, China was able to install 100 GW of new energy capacity per year, leading to a total capacity addition of 1000 GW. Most of this capacity was non-renewable. But today China is still maintaining a rate of 100 GW per year, albeit in renewables. Modiji's New Investment Pipeline envisages an increase from the current 400 GW to around 625 GW by 2026. This pace is not fast enough and we need to approach the 100 GW per year of new capacity baseline. That would give India 1400 GW by 2030, and simultaneous entry into the 10 trillion and upper-middle-income country clubs. 0 India is blessed with 300+ days of sunshine in most regions. The rooftop solar capacity is almost 300 GW if everyone fills their rooftop with panels. A combination of solar + pumped hydro can increase the capacity factor of hydroelectric power in India as most power production is shut down due to loss of water head. These are high-capacity gravity batteries that we already have in place and which can balance the load.

I was watching the show with some interest till AIM came to his rant on 'Fracking'.....which then took away from the entire discussion because he made several factual errors in his description of the science and technology behind the Shale Oil/Gas revolution which has changed the entire global energy discourse in the last decade. Its impact on American energy independence and therefore the geopolitics of the last 10 years has also been significant but that is a different topic.. Also the moot point is not whether Fossil fuels are good or bad. The debate is almost over on this and the conclusions are clear - there have to be better options and solar is definitely a solution. My issue is on a more personal and yet fundamental level. As a so called expert - if AIM is going to weigh in on a topic then he owes it to us to be informed on it. Point Number 1: Hydraulic fracturing is different from Acid stimulation which by its very name involves diluted acids which are used to dissolve carbonate formations to allow for increased production. The acids are nothing exotic -for eg. diluted HCl Point Number 2 : Shale formations cannot be dissolved by acids and therefore do not involve hazardous acids. Basically 'sand' (called proppant since it props up the fractures created) is pumped into an otherwise impermeable shale to break it down. The fractures created now allow hitherto trapped hydrocarbons to flow into the wellbore and upto the surface. Simple so far. Point Number 3 : The sand cannot be pumped on its own and has to be carried in a water based gel (basic fluid dynamics 101 - you can't pump a solid....). The gel is derived from various sources and the Indian legume 'guar' used to be a primary source when the technique was taking off in 2008/9. Nothing toxic here - 'Guar ki phali' is a favorite vegetable in North India?! Note: agreed that companies have replaced this gel with lab based chemicals but these are benign since they have to be easy to handle and transport. Coming back to my issue - 'instead of educating himself on the above basics (a short RU-vid video could have filled the gaps) - AIM's ranting drew visuals from Josh Fox's 'Gasland' of 'flaming faucets'.....something which has been shown to be inaccurate given a basic geological fact : the 'shale' being fracked and 'water' aquifers are separated by thousands of feet of impermeable rock. There is no way the fluids can communicate and enter water supplies. That said surface oil and gas seeps have been know to occur naturally all over the world and would most likely be the cause of these 'flaming taps', especially if the seep is travelling through a shallow water aquifer. Instead assigning causality to fracking indicates scientific laziness...and as a so-called 'scientific' minded intellectual AIM could do better. To close - I have a humble request; there are several better informed subject matter experts who should be invited to your show so that they can weigh in on the various topics you discuss. I am reminded of Hitchen's razor - “What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.” Unless we start showing some intellectual humility and desist from expert commentary on everything under the sun, people will start applying this razor to 'everything one says. Even if it is informed and accurate.

An Osho devotee (whom I do not know personally, and whom I have no connection with) called Dr Nityam Privette has designed solar ovens that can bring a gallon of water to boil in about 12 minutes on clear days. Reliance - or someone else - could help reduce India's carbon emissions very significantly by licensing and manufacturing solar ovens for sale to poor tea shop owners across the country. The ability to not use kerosene or gas for 6 to 7 hours a day to make chai would save a lot of money for the chaiwallas too. PM Modi and his supporters talk about his early career as a chaiwalla with pride, and it is admirable that someone who came from humble beginnings achieved so much. Perhaps, it might be good for the PM to support his former profession by bringing in solar boilers to help in more ways than can be counted...

I think along with solar, we must also invest in nuclear power. Nuclear power is highly effective and also modern reactors are very safe.

Main problem is of high prices of solar panels and batteries that have short life span and the need to replace it in every 2 to 3 years that makes it very costly for a Indian middle class to afford

BTw....current Jio phone models are also all Chinese only...and bad ones at that. Their model for the aam janta...the Jio Phone is particularly sad piece of junk. Jio believes in market disruption even before getting their systems right. And a lot of times the market disruption is aided by the govt in power at that time.

If Reliance is able to turn out their Ion Lithium batteries that will revolutionize electric vehicles as also electricity storage space . The geostrategic effect would translate into India paying less Jajia to Arab(Muslim) world in the form of oil prices some of which is funded back into India for all kinds of Jihad. Tata Chemicals, Adani Green, Adani Power, Amar Raja, Exide are pumping in money into this space. Advantage Reliance is that of scale - they are capable of pumping in a huge capital that makes the rivals sit aside.

AIM was on point again, most of the time. But he is wrong about China & solar panels. China has one of the best solar panels mfg capabilities in terms of quality and scale. US used to be ahead, but not anymore. South Korea and Taiwan are doing wonder too. Now a days you can get pretty much any technology from China with one of the best quality as well as cheap.
