Holy shit, 2023 I got laid off from my dream job and went through a bunch of pet deaths; I sat in those exact same benches staring at the church for a good few months, shitty ass gray rainy weather, having an egg and cheese from time to time was the only thing keeping me grounded. It's actually so surreal to know in some different time-space you were in the same boat, hope all is well homie - your videos make life worth living, thank you as always. Still unemployed a year later but doing what I can; fuck 2023.
dude i lost 5 of my pals in 2023 and my cousin died too... shit happens... now i'm broke going therapies and trying to get a job after being traumatized by cars but happy to be alive atleast and having a roof and some food to eat... fixing some stuff in the meantime and staying away from drugs... stuff's hard gotta live somehow😂😂... just telling i was lucky someone's had bad day than me too... being grateful for what we have works wonders and optimism is good too...
Since Conoe did ask. It’s traditional to boil the pre-baked bagels in a lye bath. It creates a glossy finish and actually hardens the outside of the bagel. It’s slightly dangerous to do but generally makes for a superior texture and flavored bagel 🥯
Baked baking soda approximates the effects of lye, but is less dangerous on the skin. It's still caustic, of course. (Baking soda for a couple of hours in a 350 degrees F oven, on a baking sheet lined with foil. Cool, then set aside. Lasts as long as kept dry in a container.)
@@MrDukeSilverr Malt syrup, barley syrup, or honey can add a little sweetness and promote some browning. It's better than not adding something to the boil.
just wanna say I'm really glad you got out of that dark place and can now make delicious home made bagels. Hope all the best comes your way man love your videos
Black and white cookies were popular at the turn of the 20th century on the east coast (Boston, New York, Florida). Cookies with cake bases and half white half black desserts were in vogue. It's credited to Glaser's Bake Shop in Manhattan by Bavarian immigrants. It became popular with the Jewish and Italian communities after WWII and became a fixture in most new york bakeries. Seinfeld ran an episode where they called it a metaphor for racial unity. Barrack Obama famously bought a couple when campaigning in 08 and called it a "unity cookie."
@@lukas_17_nA real American cookie would be a chocolate chip cookie or a peanut butter cookie or an Oreo, those are basically part of the food pyramid here.
@@lukas_17_n i know what you mean, but here in the southwest, this cookie almost vanished. i saw one of those cookies 10 years ago the last time, since then, alot of those ugly pretend to be bakeries showed up, which caused most of the traditional bakerys closing.
Haha very interesting...the black & white "cookies" are made with a cake batter, so they're really soft and they're very popular here in Germany. Almost every bakery sells them here and i've also made them myself several times. The funny part about it is that we call them "Amerikaner" ("Americans") here. 🤣😋 Love your content! Always stay the way you are! ❤ Hugs from a German girl 🙂
Aww, this description sounds so tasty... I want to try it so bad... Guess I'll have to make it myself, I've never seen this type of cookie here in Brazil lol
The boiling process makes them shiny and is required for a soft and chewy outside. It also keeps them from burning in the oven so they can bake longer and they will be fluffier on the inside :)
I don't know where they came from, but in Germany the black and white cookies are called "Amerikaner" and you can get those in many bakeries. They're good but super sweet!
the black and white cookie is something we have in all German bakeries. Here it is called Amerikaner (american). But the dough is not at all comparable to a cookie dough. It is much softer and we often only have the icing version.
Lots of people are mentioning Amerikaner cookies in Germany. Their popularity in Germany doesn't explain why he's finding them at bagel places in Manhattan. Black and white cookies were introduced to NY at a place called Glaser's Bake Shop in Manhattan, which was started by immigrants from Bavaria in the early 1900s. The reason you find them at a lot of bagel places is because they almost immediately became extremely popular at Jewish delis. Bagels as we know them today were brought to NY by Jewish immigrants and made famous at Jewish delis, so the connection remains to this day, even at "bagel places" (vs. delis with a fuller spectrum of Jewish fare).
Before New York was a colony of England it was a duesch providence New Amsterdam. From New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania were one providence of Duesch basically German/Barvaria.
Your voice reminds me of my father reciting Quran verses at 5:30 am back when I was in fifth grade when my mon used to wake me up to study early in the morning. I used to take naps in his lap listening to him reciting in that voice. Thank you for making me remember this.
The idea of spending $15 on a bagel sandwich makes my bank account hurt 😂 I am really glad you're in a better place now man, your content makes my days better and I appreciate all you do ❤
Oh man, as someone from Vietnam this makes my brain hurt. Is minimum wage in NYC like $100/hr or something? It does seem like there are copious amounts of homeless people there, makes sense now.
Hey man, I just tried your bagel recipe and must confess, it was mighty wicked! My wife and I loved it, crisp and toasty on the outside and delightfully stretchy and chewy on the inside! We ate it with smoked salmon and a dill-dijon-creame cheese spread. Absolutely fantastic, thanks a lot, never tried it before, this gonna be a weekend staple from now on.
Thank you for your content. It's always reassuring to discover there are people who like me have/had issues expressing themselves but have now found an outlet for their feelings and emotions. Love you, mate!
Bacon egg and cheese on a poppy, everything or sesame bagel is one of the things I miss most about NYC. You can get bagels in Chicago but not on what feels like every street corner. So many other people covered all the other food stuff you mentioned that I'll leave those alone, but glad to hear you got through a dark time. And like, look at you now! Making bagels! Living the dream!
Probably my favorite video so far. Glad you were able to find a place you could just sit and just BE while all the bad stuff was happening; having a place to just take a break can do wonders. The homemade bagels looked BOMB, I might have to try that.. Unrelated, I really liked the long-sleeved you had on!
The black and white (aka half-moon) cookies are traditional in Jewish bakeries. They're in the bagel shop to make you think that the bagels are also made in a traditional way. Seinfeld Shmeinfeld. I'm not sure that the cookies themselves are anything like the ones I grew up with. Bagels are supposed to be boiled, and I think some bakeries use steam in the oven like in a French bakery. Outside of New York city, people have to add baking soda to the boiling water to make it hard water like New York water.
These black and white cookies are a staple in germany. We call them "amerikaner" (american) but i don't know why. They're often available with white frosting only or with a eyes and mouth painted on them.
Now I want a bagel lol nice job making your own. I used to get bagels in NYC for like $6 on 43rd st. Maybe they gave me a discount because they liked me or something for the amount of time I went there in a week. Seeing $15 + hurts me. The rainbow bagel looked like playdo and my brain was like don't eat it! I'm glad you are in a better place. Your videos always put a smile on my face
That rainbow bagel is one of those things you look at because it's popular, think "sure guess I'll try it", and then never touch it again. So far I don't think any "specialty fad food" I've eaten became something I'd want to eat again.
@@Lav3nd3rForest I'd recognise the way he says " One through tnn" from a long way off. I'm in London, maybe if he gets enough subs he can become the new Mark Wiens and travel the globe
If you want a fresh Bagel go hit up Rockland Bagels out in West Nyack. You can literally pull it off the conveyor belt when it comes out of the oven. Bagel Bros out in Suffern is pretty good too. Also black and white cookies are just yummy.
The black and white cookies were made pretty popular worldwide because of Seinfeld so I assume a lot of shops want people to buy them when they visit New York because of how well known they are
"We must look to the cookie Elaine!" Its actually the opposite of what you said. They're a well known NY staple in delis and bagel places, that's why Seinfeld referenced them.
"Why my dough looks like it's ready to stabilize bricks"..I'm dying 🤣🤣 I really like motivational words throughout the video, I feel like you know how to use your words so it's only more richer content for us 💚
I love NYC and in your videos that city has exactly the vibe I am missing and looking for. No colourful vlog bullshit. Thank you for that 🙏 Oh and I need to use my weak moment to admit that i love you.
Funny how different people are. I was raised near NYC and there literally isn't an amount of money you could pay me to live there lol different strokes for different folks I suppose. Maybe if you enjoy art, fashion and shopping etc. and are rich, it could be cool.
@@fleshtaffy Man, I am from central Europe and born in deep cold war behind iron curtain, so unfortunately people like me suffer with over idealising some cultural icons 😅 I would never live in US in the first place, but NYC is a symbol. Stinky, overpriced, cold and hard for living, yes totally but still a symbol.
I get it, I have been in Vietnam for over 3 years now and they have very similar views of the USA. I often shatter their perceptions of it haha but better for them to be aware than to have absurd dreams of living there one day. @@Ra-Ram3n
Care for sharing your story about that horrible summer? A couple of years back, I think I had a similar experience. On the back of a terrible breakup, working a boring and unfulfilling job, I spent the majority of an exhaustingly hot summer in the city, mainly because I couldn't afford going on holiday. I was stressed out, depressed, couldn't sleep properly, and the only things that sustained me were going out for sunbathing in the local park after work, getting pho in the neighborhood, and eating frozen fruit juice pops out of the fridge (sometimes at night, as it was so hot in that flat, without air conditioning).
i feel ancient with you making that EMT ref and realizing that that channel is like 15 years old now also thank u king for finally including the dio audio ur so real for that
And now I'm craving a good bagle but I live in a place where a can't get any. Well I'm very very glad my mum dropped off some homemade kringlor (there is no english word for them(Kringla is singular and kringlor is plural in Swedish) but they are round with a hole in the middle and there are versions that are sweet, semi sweet, bready, bagley and more) so I'm going to eat than with butter and cheese as an evening snack now.
Homemade looks the best, however a small amount of barley malt is suppose to go into the boiling water. The second one I was drooling for though. Hot bagels! Yum! The last one you visited looks amazing too. I’ll have to check these out next time I’m in the city. Bagels are not suppose to be thick and doughy like some of the bad bagel shops out there 😮. Best
I once bought rainbow bread to make my son fun lunches… the first time I made him a sandwhich and he saw it, he made a face. He tasted it and pushed it away. He said “it’s just not natural, mom.”😑He was 3.😂
I tried your recipe and I love it! I don't have a point of reference regarding how they should taste bc there aren't many places I can get bagels where I live, but I honestly dont care. Its great. Thanks ❤
Jimmy John’s sandwiches and people watching at a temple is my equivalent to your bagel story. Goddamn 2021-2022 had kicked my ass, but a sandwich on the grass under a tree in the summer or in the car during the winter kept me alive. Best wishes to everyone in their bagel era 💗💗💗
Bro I was visiting new york and went to that exact liberty bagel and when I asked about the rainbow bagel, they very explicitly said it was vanilla flavoured and sweetened. The fact that you got a classic with lox and they didnt say anything is wild lmao
I went to Fuji-Q Highland while in Japan. They had a stand that had rainbow bagels, I got one with mint chocolate chip spread and my god was it delicious. I think it was called bon bon bagel, if you feel adventurous and like world record breaking rollercoasters I highly recommend going there. Plus great bagels
hey! i dont know if you know about the boycott but starbucks is among the places we’re trying not to go as they fund the idf! really appreciate the video tho i have never had a bagel in my life and im too lazy to make one lmao
No tf they don’t lmao you’re talking out of your ass. Who is this “we” you’re speaking for? Stop parroting stupid influencers who are just trying to score brownie points for being social activists.
3:41 in Germany those things are called „amerikaner" (funny enough that apparently those things aren't even known in America 😄) And it's not a cookie. It's a fluffy pie with a sugar- and chocolate glaze. It really depends on the bakery but if baked well, it's absolutely delicious. I love them! As far as I'm concerned you put vanilla pudding powder in the dough and that gives the cake an interesting but really enjoyable flavour of vanilla and consistency. It's kinda fluffy but also really dense. Also you form the dough into a ball and place it on a baking tray, that's why it's so flat on the one side but so round on the other.
I was well into my 20s before I found out that black and white cookies are only an east coast thing in the states. We do call them cookies even though, as you describe, they are cake-like in texture. It really freaked me out to go to a bakery in California and not see these cookies.
Have visited New York twice. And honestly I thought I visited and saw enough the 2nd time that I thought I wouldn’t go again (I live in Ireland, but of a trek) But now I wanna go back and recreate all these food places u visit! Might have to go again 😂
you said you went to starbucks in your video, and even tho i know how tempting and available it is to go there i want to let you know theres a boycott for it as its ceo funds ge -nocide!! and its best to boycott, you could try local coffee shops instead as nyc is full of them
hi i love ur videos, and just wanted to let you know that there is a boycott against starbucks because of their union-busting practices, and specifically their attempts to silence those unions who have voiced support for Palestine. it's not a big deal if you just didn't know! Just letting you know for future reference possibly
They didn’t try to silence a union. They went after an organization for using their branded imagery. Maybe do some research instead of just repeating bullshit 😍
@@whynotnofi8278 That organization is a workers group... literally starbucks workers... who make efforts to unionize starbucks employees against starbucks horrible treatment. Also they had been using the name "Starbucks" before, and Starbucks only took such action against them for this after the group made a statement of solidarity with Palestine. It's quite clear the reasons but go ahead and believe it's just copyright infringement and simp for a corp lollll Almost every news source will call it a union so maybe you should do some research?
If you ever get to Charlottesville, VA, try Bodo’s Bagels. They are made fresh daily so I recommend stopping by in the AM when they are still warm. 🤤🤤🤤 and they make their own cream cheese.
@@SentheagentHe obviously heard of the boycott. He's not oblivious to social media trends, he's a food related RU-vidr so he DEFINITELY heard of the Starbucks boycott + There are a lot of other places he could've stopped at to get a coffee in New York.
