My own composition written to accompany this fantastic solo by Virgil Donati for DW drums. My composition is fairly heavily influenced by Virgil Donati's solo albums: 'In This Life' and 'Dawn of Time'. So if you like this you should definitely Check those albums out. Enjoy! :)

Sometimes I forget these have been composed after the fact. I thought I was watching Virgil play to a track he had prepared for the DW video. Bravo, Alastair.

This was exactly my thought when I discovered Alastair. My brain froze when I realized it was composed on the solo. Awesome musicality to fool us like this !

@@Mephistito It's also a good sentiment towards the drummers themselves. If their ideas make enough sense to compose around and make the composition sound good, it's a testament to the player's ability to be musical.

I've seen this man play live twice. Once was with Allan Holdsworth shortly before he passed. I am somewhat convinced Virgil is not human. Guy creates black holes while he's playing and creates time that is outside of itself.

Great job it's really great to follow all the odd time signature also rhythm modulations and dig deeper into virgil's mind because the music helps create a road map

Virgil has a metronome for the first 2 minutes(ish) on this video. For the rest of my videos, they don't have a metronome. Although before I write the compositions I create my own metronome track to the solos. :)

The playing is of course amazing but I'm not a fan of the drum mix. The hihats are obnoxiously bright, the kick doesn't have enough bottom, and the whole thing has too much room tone that doesn't blend well with how close mic'd every other instrument in the mix is

Yeah, I know what you mean about the drum mix, I'm no expert but the drums do sound a little harsh to me.
