re the buttons the 128 number is per detected joystick device, so for example i have 104 on one device, 30 something on each mfd (x3) , another 24 on a separate button box... you dont need to use separate software for them to be recognised, i suspect what is happening is that you are chaining the devices through virpil's software or physically via their cable management solution so it looks like one device.
Thanks for the correction speed that must have been what was happening to me very good to know. That certainly makes it less likely to affect most people and much easier to sort out if does. Cheers!
Came here for this! Rocking a VKB MCGU but eyeing a CM3 and button box (since VKB can’t seem to get a throttle to market). I’ve been wondering about this limitation and appreciate the clarification!
Yeah, when you daisy chain the button box your game sees your, say throttle + button box as one device for it's cumulative button max. And that's the combination that MAY give you issues, but I dont think so. When I go to Virpil's joystick tester, my CM2 shows 31 buttons, to which you have to add 4x6 more buttons (4 more banks of the 6 momentary keys) so 55 buttons. 128 - 55 gives you 78 buttons of space on the button box, which it surely doesn't have. DCS has a 128 button limit, I believe Star Citizen recently went up to 100 buttons per device. Jesse, the info that would be helpful for this is the number of buttons the Virpil Joy tester says each button box has! It LOOKS like the one with the level has 42 + the light controls, and maybe 47 for the pure button box. So the pure button box + throttle might have small issues with SC.
I have the first button box and it's great. I also have the 3rd version of the Virpil throttle (finally a AAA throttle with a center detent!) and I really like how my pc can see them as one unit, but I'm also glad I have the flexibility to separate them. The setup is firmware-based so there's no need to leave any utility open while using these sticks to make use of your custom settings. I love that.
Thank you for being very clear about the dials, most people who show this off aren't. Actually SHOWING us the range of all the switch and dials motion was a nice touch that answered the question in the back of my mind about the dials.
Your videos are exceptionally well done. You also seem to be really thorough when talking about products and pointing out flaws when they are found. I really appreciate that. Thanks
Thanks for these Virpil vids, Jesse. Just built a new pc and gonna be looking at upgrading my space sim experience. These are incredibly informative and will be looking at buying some Virpil products while I’m stationed their side of the pond. 👍🏼
Fantastic stuff Jesse as always and thank you. I've been looking forward to your review on these two panels for awhile. I'm sold and will be purchasing these in the near future because of this review.
You made my day brother thank you for the kind words! I am in very good company being likened to GT. Thanks so much for the boost man very very appreciated! Cheers!
Jesse, no more sexy sim kit please! Just spent money on a VKB Gunfighter stick + base, already spent on VKB pedals, no money left for anything else! That panel looks mmmighty fine!
Awesome review video! Makes me want to invest hardcore in Virpil controls for sure. Your video quality keeps getting better! I would love to hear your opinions on the Sony A7s III now that you have had it a while. I have been shopping for Full Frame Cameras for video production.
Thanks Mit! Sony A7sIII is still an incredible camera. Head and shoulders above even my A7III on account of its SLOG3 and 4k/120fps. Just love it. I'm not sure you can go wrong with it and Sony is droppin new lenses now like its their job. Wait....
I am really glad that I saw His video on the CosmoSima from VKB before I bough one. When he mentioned the flashing rubbing on the thumb having a sharp edge, it pushed me over the edge on going VirPil. My hands are not small, and that sharp edge would have been bugging me a lot.
@@NTovaar I have yet to try a Virpil stick but I love their control panels and throttles, I want to eventually get a Constellation Alpha but I'm still on the VKB ecosystem. I'm interested to seeing Jesse compare the VKB F-14 to the Virpil VFX and then I may finally convert over to more virpil gear.
@@MattBoone_ You make a great point. I have been playing more Star Citizen than DCS or MSFS lately so that might explain/support my gravitation in the Virpil direction.
Cool video, and a good outline of the two controls. I got panel 2 based on your video, looks right up my alley. Do you have any ETA for info about panel 3? I'm wondering how... nuts they can go.
I wish I knew Giliar! I think there are draft designs somewhere in their blog if I remember correctly. Maybe do some searching there. Enjoy your new kit when it arrives!
Hello, im totally lost with the configuration :D I have the control panel 2 (with the landing gear), and with this one come only 3 encoder dials (trim knob) , but i can not succes to make them work as axis dials in DCS...I try to make this dials work as "virtual axis" without sucess. But maybe im not making it in the good way. I would like to use it for flood light or any progressiv fonction. If any idea or info i take it :D Thanks ;)
Just got my dual Alphas in Definitely thinking about getting these to go with them Supposedly Star Citizen is adding more control updates to make these switch boxes work without 3rd party software
Shouldn't be too hard. I have dual NXT premium sticks, I have every button bound and don't use any 3rd party software. Just go into advanced settings and choose the option you want and click the button you want it bound to.
Wondering if you have templates for your bindings for the Virgil panels in flight sim? I know.. everyone says “customize it to your liking” but I really am interested in how everyone else does it.
I was just thinking about you and wondering when will Jesse release a video on the new control panels and then boom! My question is do you use Monstertech for your mounting solution for your control box or virpils'?
I used the Virpil desk mounts for this video but I am routinely moving back and forth between different brands for making videos so the answer is both. What I can say with confidence though is they both work well at their respective price points.
Those are attached to the Virpil desk mount via an adapter they sell for attaching their button boxes to their desk mount. In other words the same mount that is holding the stick to the desk is also where the control panels are attached.
Interesting video. Wondering, have you done a review of the WinWing setup. There throttle, HOTAS and button boxes? Would be interested in your thoughts. Been thinking if getting into DCS.
A slight aside: I'm about to install my Virpil HOTAS plus rudder pedals. I already have my VR headset. What advice for using this kit without lifting my headset?
The more you use your HOTAS the more you’ll commit it to memory. The whole point of a HOTAS is so you don’t have to think to hard or take your hands off the controls to do things. Eventually it will become second nature and you certainly won’t need to look at them. If it’s a newer headset it may have cameras on the front that you can activate to see the real world (keyboard for example) if you need to.
Button boxes help a lot in VR as its much easier to feel the difference between buttons than it is keyboard keys. The buttons and switches and dials are all laid out pretty logically too so these are a big plus in VR cockpits.
ordered #2 panel and CM3 4 weeks ago, hopefully ship soon; my 2 Alpha are stuck at Memphis =[, for those who want to order, pay for better shipping, don't do the FedEx economy... was stuck at France for 7 days...
Great video as always Jesse. I understand the expense with the throttles, sticks and bases but how can they justify $300 for a metal panel box with some nice buttons? I know that they use high quality buttons and switches but I can't imagine they would add up to anything close to the asking price for these especially with bulk buying factored in.
Make one to the same standard and find out exactly how much it costs. Just because you "can’t imagine" the costs involved in product development, marketing, distribution, labour and everything else involved with manufacturing; does not mean they do not exist. I suggest you concentrate your energy on saving your money for all the pretty things you want, instead of grumbling about how expensive everything is.
I can't stand their attachment to these encoder dials. Axis have always been so much more useful to me. The encoder never manages to simulate an axis properly.
