Episode#29 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
In this video I will show you how to generate your cabinet.xml file that is needed to control your addressable led strips in your pinball cabinet. I will also show how to flash the required firmware on your teensy micro controller with the teensy strip controller. As usual, this video will have a ton of tips and tricks to get your custom virtual pinball looking absolutely amazing! This stuff seems crazy hard but is actually pretty simple once you have a walkthrough like this. Fear not! I got you!
Here is the link to my cabinet.xml file for you to edit or print off and follow along....you pick.

@@wayofthewrench When I have friends that come over and ask me how I managed to make my cab finally run, I'll send them your way!!! LOL I kid you not. I have watched many videos and nothing seemed to work. I'm not an idiot as I have been building shit all my life. Have a look at my homemade slot machine I made a few years ago. I'm thinking of incorporating LEDWiz in it now as I have a few ideas to make it even more Vegas like!!!! I also built an arcade cabinet that looks like the TARDIS from Dr Who. When you open the doors, the console comes out and you play 2 people at a time. Close the doors and it looks like the Police Box. I also made a video poker machine, and a Jukebox. My pinball was a rebuilt from when I had first built it minus the DOF from 2008. Back then, I was running a 1080p screen with only a 21 4:3 back glass. Now this new one, has 4 monitors including all the DOF toys, SFF LED and whatever else I can think of. If I could add a kitchen sink in it, I would!!!!! LOL My 1080p ended up being another arcade but for my metal shop in the yard. I have a computer there as well so I thought, why not use it as an arcade? So I made it in a caddy corner angle in order not to lose any space and I used checkered plating for the kick plate. Looks rugged but looks sharp at the same time. Wife thinks I'm crazy!! That's what happens when you have too many Army injuries and can't sleep at night. You surf the net at night and build stuff the next day!!!! Don't kid yourself, these things are pretty complex and it only takes one thing for them not to work. Wow! Your a busy guy, lots of cool toys! I checked out your slot machine, very cool! I like the 2 way mirror led effect on top.

@danyf3116 Год назад
@@wayofthewrench Thank you. Over the years, from building all these toys, I have made a lot of friends with businesses. One of them is the Admiral Autoglass guy, Brian. Each time I need either plate glass for my pinball or two way mirror, he's my go to source. He's always interested in what I'm building. He knows I'm up to something cause each time I walk in his shop, it is always for something that no one else would dare ask! LOL Over the years, I have bought so much shit from him, that he lets me come in the back shop and has taught me the art of cutting glass. It comes in handy in my projects. Anyone can cut glass in a straight line but cutting one in an arc, is not as easy. He taught me how. I have bought everything from plexiglass to Lexan, to plate glass to mirror and anything else you can imagine. Like I said. If I have an idea in mind and it involves some kind of weird glass, I ask Brian. As soon as I walk in, either him or his wife will ask me, "What are you building this time???!!!" It never fails!!!! LOL That's how good business friendships are built on. Many times he has even lent me tools for the weekend so I could finish my projects. That even included a certain powder to polish glass. That is a rarity if you ask me. I am old school. Scratch my back and I'll return the favor.

So I just finished watching your cabinet.xml video after testing, wiring, installing my LED's and configuring DOF. I am proud to say EVERYTHING worked the first go around. I was nervous about the flash issue you outlined, but mine worked immediately. I have the Teensy 4.0, but that's the only difference between our setups. Just wanted to express my thanks for your detailed tutorial, there is little chance I would have figured this out on my own and your videos make it look so effortless. I have about 10 feet of extra WS2812B LED lights so similar to your cabinet, I think I am going to add those to a separate controller and power supply so I can light up the inside of the cab when doing maintenance while all the cabinet components are powered off. So fun to think of ideas . . . thanks again!

I'm strongly considering using your plans to do a 'murphy bed' style cabinet that sits between studs. What I'd like to do is cripple up a window frame in an interior wall; and then have the table flip 'down' out like a Murphy bed and then Stow away when not in use :)

First, thanks for a great series. I have watched your videos it seems 10x over. My cab is a 65% scale and I was able to incorporate lots of your tips and ideas. I must say though this teensy 4.0 controller is a royal pain in the you know what. I watched this video many many times and followed it to the letter but still my controller does not seem to be working and the cabinet file is not getting picked up by DOF. frustrating to say the least. It programs fine through the Arduino IDE no problem and the Rainbow sketch work great so I know the hardware is good at least. This is just my experience and has nothing to do with your videos. I recommend this series to anyone wanting to venture into the Vpin world.

Another good way of viewing XML files directly is using by Foxe (First Object XML Editor), which is free and is easier to use than of notepad. I use it a lot for my work with AutoCAD Plant 3D. It shows both the tree with their variables and the code itself in separate windows side-by-side. The left side tree allows variables to be editable. The right side will show the code in its entirety and is also editable. When entering your variables in the tree, it will highlight those in the code as well.

The led strip lights, are they connected into my rigmaster for dof. As far as i know they have a signal wire which goes to the teencab, and a + - to 5v. The video has a part when you assign ports on the dofconfig.

Great Video once again Emil :D I am using a few of the Arnoz boards which are sooo good, but the manuals can sometimes be a little hard to follow for me, so nice for you to do one on this one. On a whole other matter... I know you use an old tv for the playfield, but do you know if it is a VA or an IPS panel?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Год назад
Hi Jesper! Glad I could help ya out. You would have to search up the used tv/monitor for their specs to find out for sure. VA monitors usually have wider viewing angles but lower contrast but the technology changes all the time. For vpins, we really need wide viewing angles as the playfield will wash out if it isn't. Lag and refresh rate is also really important. Cheers!
@Jewer76
@Jewer76 Год назад
@@wayofthewrench Thing is, I am building a cab too but just broke the playfield tv so have to get a new one. Went with an IPS panel before, because of the viewing angles, but I thought it could have better contrast and deeper blacks, which VA panels usually have. So was just curious what type of panel yours is, and if you are happy with it. In the videos it look both bright and with good viewing angles, but I could be mistaken.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Год назад
My monitor is really quite nice for a ten year old tv considering. It has a very good viewing angle, low lag, and for it being a 60hz refresh rate, the true motion plus does make it feel way better than 60hz in game mode. If you're interested, the exact model is in the video description in my monitors video. I will be eventually upgrading this monitor to a 4k 120hz monitor but not till I'm done the series. Kinda eyeing the LG C2 OLED tv.
@matt68061
@matt68061 Год назад
I was going thru the monitor decision last fall… went with ASUS 43 inch 120hz (XG438Q ). Its pretty damn great.. I found a local “deal” or would have went 144hz. But these OLED tv’s and monitors are very! Very intriguing. My advice to anyone is, if it is even close to being inn he budget, don’t skimp on the monitor. I had an old 1080tv and it was good. The 4k 120hz is on a different level! Probably single biggest upgrade I can think of…

Loving the build but any chance you can do a clip on how to bodge it without all the expensive tools. The Table saw for starters. I don't mind buying a router & electric saw but how many people watching this build can afford a table saw or the expense of hiring one?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Год назад
Well you gotta remember that you are building a quite expensive vpin cab so the tools justify the means. That being said you can make this without a table saw, you just have to be really steady and there might be a lot more sanding. There are other options too. Use a circular saw. Buy a used table saw/sell it when you're done or borrow one from a friend. Go to a maker space and use theirs. Or buy a $300 one and learn how to use it which might open up new projects or even new career paths for you. I personally love working with my hands and being creative so these tools allow me that freedom. Hope that helps, cheers!
@andyb6120
@andyb6120 Год назад
@@wayofthewrench Good points but you picked up a second hand display. You are going to be sad if that breaks & can't get the same replacement. For all the effort a 4K new monitor should have been a must. Not started my build yet but my monitor is 144hz 0.4 ms 4K. Keep up the great work.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Год назад
Yeah the idea was to make a budget build for most people to cheaply start so 1080p it was. I'm not worried about the monitor as the long term plan is to upgrade this cabinet to a 4k 120hz or higher monitor and capable gpu after the build series is done. I will have room for a 48 to 50" monitor in this cabinet and all I have to do is adjust the playfield mounts. If someone asked me what they should do in the future is build around a 4k 120z monitor and you can always set it to 1080p to start and once you can afford the better gpu, it's ready to go. Cheers!

After that, Teensy does no longer appear at the port list of Windows Device Manager (It did appear there when I set it to manual mode as com3) - I guess that means that programs like DOF won't be able to communicate with it...and indeed I can't get the LEDs to work. any idea? How powerful of a PC do you need to run a cabinet or even just a single screen machine? For my first project… I am looking into a relatively inexpensive dedicated PC such as a prebuilt PowerSpec G513 at MicroCenter. It has Ryzen 5 3.7GHz Processor, GeForce RTX 3060 12gb DDR gpu and then 16gb of ram. Would these specs be good enough to run most tables? Do I need 32gb or ram instead? BTW: These tutorials are incredibly helpful and great to watch & learn from.

Yeah that pc will be great for 1080p at 60 hz and maybe even 4k at 60 hz and maybe even good for 4k at 120hz if you lower the performance. I'm jealous, my first test build was an i3 with a gtx 1050....my current budget build is an i5 with 16g of ram and a gtx 770. This does 1080p at 60 hz no problems. Good luck on your build!

Terrific video. i'm having i think com port problems. I was able to flash it both ways, still nothing. i reverted back to the test program to make sure my board didn't get fried or something, and that worked. I know i have power, i know the board is alive, i just can't get DOF make teensy do something. In the arduino IDE, i've had the teensy on Com1 and then on a weird usb port. i know com1 is in use through device manager, i'm confused.

disregard above - i started just assigning different ports - COM3 worked eventhough that never appeared on the Arduino IDE. Working great now.

Glad you got it figured out Thomas! Enjoy the DOF!

so you have 4 green data lines feeding into output 4 on your teensy? Or you just wired them all into 1 green data line? edit: you must have run a green data line continuously through all 4 sections and just used 1 data line coming from output 4 as they all have the same behavior assignment

I have one cat 5 wire plugged into the one port. I used the 4 separate wire sets (4 channels) for different led sections. One for the matrix, one for the left strip, one for the right strip, and one for the speakers/undercab/behind back box. Thanks for the watch!
@Enthusiast_bttf
@Enthusiast_bttf 10 месяцев назад
awesome thanks for clarifying - wouldn't you only need 1 dof assignment for your speakers/undercab/backbox then? @@wayofthewrench

Only one DOF cabinet file and one dof config download from vpu. Yes, only 1 channel for the speakers, undercab, and backbox.

What is the software you use to run your vpin tables?

Baller installer is what you want to install. Pinup popper front end with vpx and future pinball emulators. I have a video on it in the playlist. Thanks for the watch!

Hi when i try to upload the downloaded firmware on the teensy 4.0 the program button is greyed out no matter what i do and other firmware upgrade didnt work ☹️

Make sure you have the 4.0 firmware and I would try several attempts, it didn't work the first time with mine and it only worked with the manual flash. Good luck!

@@wayofthewrench I finally got it working with the experimental 4.0 firmware but like you said I had to do it a few times. I have the matrix working now in tables but popper isn't for some reason. Thanks btw your tutorials are a massive help. 👍

Perfect! Glad you got it going! I would re look at the video for dof and there is a section on adding some code to pinup for it to work. Glad you're loving the content! Cheers!

how do i find the serial number for my sainsmart 8ch
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 месяца назад
You don't need the serial number if you're only running one board. If your running more than one, you might need to find that out. There is a program in the folder you download for manually operating the sainsmart board (it's in the video). This program will open the board and spit out the serial number. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench still cant find it ive watched everyone of your lessons but at the time i was only adding 1 board youve inspired me to hook 2 -8 ch MAYBE IN YOUR NEXT LESSON
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 месяца назад
what you need isn't in the video I made, the program you need is in the sainsmart board download folder that IS in the video. In that folder is another program that you can open to get the details of the board (serial number). I originally did that for that video and then found out you only needed that info if you had more than 1 board. Hope that helps
