Perfect timing. I just started getting battery warnings on my Virus KC.

There are videos and photos online, just be very careful with ribbon cables. Do not screw any screws through one or kink or put em backwards and all will be fine, just go slow and careful.

Clean the contacts under the buttons very carefully while you are at it. The dust and such can wear the coatings off so its good to clean em.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I’ve had these for over 25 years so I want to treat them right. Cheers!

I have a Virus TI2 desktop version on the way and can't wait. This was an intimidating, stress-inducing breakdown. So many screws!

about 2 years ago, i had to replace the battery in my Roland JP8000. i didnt even think about backing up the midi data/patches, but luckily everything was still there. it was super easy to do, but man, all those screws are annoying! haha

Thankfully all my synths are new enough that I shouldn't have to do any deep dives like this for a while. I'm starting to maintain my own games consoles and computers now so that hopefully I'll have enough practice working with electronics when the day comes though.

This reminds me that I should replace the battery in my Access Virus Polar TI2. Thanks

I hear so many sounds from the skinny puppy album greater wrong of the right. Nice! I didn’t realize we had to change batteries on our work stations. Were you having issues or is this pre emptive maintenance? Like me I’m not afraid to take things apart and fix myself as I have maintained my Korg M50 myself and they are know for power issues and circuit board malfunctions. Nice job ken!

i have a dear, beloved rackmount multi effects unit that's gone to the factory three times for battery replacements. i'm certain they have used a soldered lithium coin battery. seeing this, and having seen tutorials for how one could replace the soldered system for an equivalent snap-in kit (like seen in your synth here) ...well, i'm just gonna do it. i always leave this channel full of inspiration. thanks, Ken!

That's nuts for a battery change. I have the desktop B model, and the battery change was a lot less intensive. That being said, that KC is one truly nice bit of kit! You've mentioned you're a big fan of the "Pitchy" sound in the factory sound bank... Are there any others you've gotten some mileage out of? I mostly try to design my own sounds, rather than use presets, but I feel that my approach is less based in what is practical, and more based in just trying to do it all myself and/or some sort of subconscious vanity on my part. I mean, I know it's as easy as "if it sounds good, use it!", but in practice, where do you draw the line on making your own sound versus using a soundbank patch?

Sean, that PITCHY preset is definitely one of my faves, BOOM! When I do drop factory sounds in a project, I always try and make them my own in some way, by either reinforcing, or processing the original ;-) As of late, I've been using my Virus as an external audio processor...it's mind blowing how it can transform sounds. In a mix I just finished yesterday, I was using the two filters in independent mode, and they allowed me to process stereo tape voices in a way I've NEVER heard before...absolutely KILLER sounding! I strongly recommend diving deep into the matrix, you can literally route anything, anywhere. I never understood the power of the KC's aftertouch either...talk about an insane amount of modulation control! You can morph audio in a vary unique way with aftertouch, give it a try!!! Thanks for sharing Sean, I always appreciate it man! Cheers, hiwatt

@@hiwattmarshall I've done a little bit of external audio processing with it, but admittedly, most likely not enough. I love running a wide stereo guitar through it with the Band Split filters modulated at different rates, and set to parallel routing. Definitely a cool way to get some strangeness out of a guitar tone. It sounds like I need to really deep dive on this thing again. I swear, everytime I mess with my B, I learn new things it can do. Thanks for the response. You've given me some real meat to chew on for a good long time. Much love and respect from Northern Ontario!!

I'm not so familiar with Viruses, but the fact that You'll have to remove the keybed to change the battery is quite surprising desing! Did You have any glitches or otherwise weird sounds when the battery was dying? Some old stuff gets to a whole new sound universe when the ram is starting to starve on power. At some point It kind of randomises everything. I've had some very strange sounds from old Yamahas and Casios in similar situations.

I’m going to have to do this to my Virus Indigo II sooner or later. And I have to ask… Any good bank/patch recommendations that you could share for the Virus C?

Did same with mine, wasn't that bad at all! It's just heavy and large synth

They literally could just have a slot in the back that the coin battery slides in/out of, and take the user 20 seconds to complete without opening a thing.
