I am a African American female. I just got back from Europe, including 3 days in Budapest. I loved it. I even went out at night alone once ( admittedly in the high traffic central tourist area) I had no problems & would definitely visit there again.

My fiance and I have just spent 4 days in Budapest and have spent £400 in total (for two people). We ate out, used public transport and rented an apartment. This £400 also includes our flights. You can still do Budapest on the cheap in 2015. And service has improved massively. Everywhere we went people were friendly, service was great and everyone spoke English.

My partner and I are going for 4 days in less than 2 weeks so your comment was SUPER helpful, far moreso than the actual video you commented on. I'm particularly glad to hear about the prevalence of English, though I AM trying to learn some phrases in Hungarian so I can at least make an effort when I go. Thank you

I've spent over one year in Budapest and it is one of the best place to be. Much better then London where I live now. More friendly people, better food (much better actually), better night life. I can;t agree that service is bad. It is very good but you have to understad that the way how people behave it s the part of their culture. In general people in continental Europe are different than in USA or England, they more express what is in their mind instead of saying all the time that everything is great, fantastic etc.Don't get me wrong, I like your video but it represents for me a tipical American point of view.

I visited Hungary about two years ago - I was very impressed with the freeways (much better than in the US) and the charming, picturesque cities, especially up in the mountain-regions that reminded me of Sweden. The western part of Hungary is a lot like Holland (flat), except a lot cheaper. I was terrified how fast the shuttle bus drove on the freeway from the airport (100 mph). Food is great and cheap. The airport is small but elegant, a fresh change from LAX or Frankfurt. I do hear that there are problems with the gypsies. They stabbed to death a young athlete just before I arrived, so I was worried. Just avoid cheaper locales where they hang out. Go in the summer, weather was great when on the same day Germany had a bad storm.

1. it was cheaper than expected, 2. Everyone served us in fluent english. 3. ripoffs , maybe we payed 2000 florint too much, that's about €7. 4. Intolerance, ridiculous, these people were the most acceptant I've ever experienced. 5. Service was excellent in every place we went except for 1 Italian restaurant called CIAOCIAO, never visit that one. Budapest was awesome, I felt safe all the time, even when I stumbled to the hotel drunk, alone in the center streets. +Stewie Griffin Yes, you are right. Budapest is a nice city. 'As far as english... Please use common sense. In any shop etc. in the center of city thety will speak english. If you are the owner of a shop in the center where you will see lots of tourist you would most likely hire people who speak english! Its all about making money. Would you hire someone who does not speak english if you had a shop down town????? If you go little bit more outside of the city you will realize how bad their english is. Which i understand due to their history. but things is changing nowadays... The youth is doing much better in english now.

They can still rip you off in taxis and restaurants if they hear you are not Hungarian. They know they are breaking the law but they don't care. WEll .. I went to Budapest in May as planned. There wasn't one thing that I did not like about it. I loovvvved it. Everyone was quite pleasant. We did the typical touristy things ---and loved all of them and we also spent two days on our own just wandering and shopping and exploring. Loved all of it. No need to use any of the taxi's because if we weren't on the hop on/off bus, we used the local transportation system. And I had already arranged a private taxi for our ride to the airport. I didn't have any trouble with the language because so, so many people spoke English. We learned how to say please and thank you, hello and goodye. People were pleased with that and our attitudes. Really, truly loved it and would like to go back again someday.

I've been to Hungary and have to say that the best experience is actually going outside of Budapest into the countryside. The country is beautiful, the food is amazing and the people are super friendly. We were shocked at the amount of English spoken out in the areas outside of Budapest. Prices are a lot better there as well. I spent a few days in Budapest and just felt is was a little cold compared to some cities like Warsaw and Prague. Still, Hungary is a MUST visit country.

I live in Budapest and completely agree that the attitude of some service people is really rude. However, there has been improvement over the past few years. Also they have standardized the taxis so if you get in an official cab and ask them to turn on the meter you won't be ripped of anymore. Some people really are racist and intolerant, but it's not aimed at blacks, it's aimed at gypsies. However, this does not represent Hungarians at all. Normal Hungarian despise these people just as much as you would, and we consider them a shame on our nation. Also funny comment about "Igor" massaging you here. Since Igor is not a Hungarian name, the only Igors in Hungary would be Russians, I've personally never met anyone named Igor in Hungary.

Just got back from a 3 month visit to Budapest. One of the nicest cities I've ever been to. It's cheap- 3 course meal and a bottle of wine for £20 a head in a very nice restaurant, very good transport system (also cheap): trams, buses, trolley buses, subway, taxis everywhere, and now Uber. Nightlife is 24/7. Definitely check out the ruin bars. People are friendly, particularly the younger generation who all seem to speak English. Don't forget they were under communist rule not that long ago, and you can see and feel it's presence everywhere. Not surprisingy, the older generation still have that running in their veins. This place is fantastically foreign (to Westerners), but embrace the foreignness and you'll have a great time.

Perhaps if you made more of an effort to learn even a few words of Hungarian, you would find that the service would be better. Even in the video, you say "Danube" when that is not the Hungarian name for the river you are overlooking, it's Duna. Mátyás, szia, Andrássy út which I believe you referred to as "strasse" rather than "út" (I'm hard of hearing and your CC is just bizarre) making it German not Hungarian. I am not making a dig or an angry criticism towards you, only an observation that a little more care with the language of whichever country you happen to be visiting goes an extraordinarily long way towards the reception and service you will have. I've been in places where I've said "good evening" first thing in the morning, asked where the metro was while pantomiming that I clearly needed a WC instead, but I was making a good-faith effort, and it showed, rather than relying on the entire world to speak English. I have been in many countries in which I speak only as much as I managed to learn on the plane/train/boat there and got far better service at restaurants with what little I knew than people who made no attempt whatsoever. It's important and it matters.
@istvanmeszaros4112
@istvanmeszaros4112 7 лет назад
I have found that the services are much better compared to Slovakia or Czech Republic, especially in the touristic areas. What you will maybe miss, is that people are not really smiling on the streets, they are very busy and stressed during weekdays. What is good that you can find beatiful huge parks right in the city center :) like the "Varosliget".... Margaret Island... These are just some points added to the list :)... I think if you stay there 4-5-6 days you will love it.

Hey, You went at the wrong time Wolter. You may have saved some $ on your plane ticket, but missed out on so much! Budapest has a beautiful vibe from April to September. You really need to visit again and update this video.. I just spent 5 months in Hungary and I find ppl more than helpful and many speak English or German / Italian. Also the signs are usually in 3 languages almost everywhere, Hungarian, English & German. Also taxis now have to follow a strict regulations, There are many new laws regarding that, especially at the airport! Just like in NY City, cabs are all yellow now. Budapest is also safer and cleaner than many east European cities. I know there is so much more to Hungary than BP, but you never get bored of this city. No wonder they call it the "Pearl of Central Europe. You are right about the prices however, Prepare to pay west European prices for almost everything.
@AttilaBP
@AttilaBP 9 лет назад
I'm glad you had a nice time ... I believe this video is around 99% inaccurate as far as "hate" additionally it is 5 years old now. For example it is far cheaper than most European countries as you stated :) Additionally having a lack of Hungarian is little to no problem now most hotel chain as well as restaurants have at least one person that speaks fluent English, additionally, transport is a breeze with the integrated metro and bus system which all provide English announcements throughout the bus journey and metro journey, (this is also available on trams and other methods of transport run by the BKK) You can also by tickets for transport from machines where you can select your language so really it is such a breeze :). Taxis have a flat fee or counting fee which is normal furthermore to support this there is now a government - fixed km price for every company, so they cannot rip you off. The safety its self is perfectly up to high standards and there are many places open at night. Depending on where you go with waiters but normally if you are in a nice hotel that has a restaurant you are sorted :) Ps depending on whether you are going in to an International chain will depend on whether they have bilingual staff.

This video is not doing justice to Budapest. I have lived and studied there for years, although I am not Hungarian, and I live on a budget, and for sure I can say that it is a really great place to visit, or to live in. It is not racist more than any other city in Europe. I had bunch of friends and classmates of African and Asian origin who lived in Budapest and loved it. Hungarians are not chatty and talkative people like in Spain, Italy or Greece, but the quality of service is decent, and restaurants and cafes are excellent, I can testify that. It is a cool place for fun, meeting friends, partying, the international crowd is big, and prices are really cheap for western money. I don't get what this guy was talking about "being expensive", what does he expect, to get a meal and accommodation for 2 dollars???? I don't think people should rely on videos made on the basis of such a reduced experience of a city. You cannot judge well any city if you spend just a day or two in it.

eltfell You are talking about old folks who were born and raised during Communism.I have recently spent a week in Seville and 90% of floorstaff serving tourists in bars speak no English whatsoever.I was lucky to have an Italian friend around who managed to make himself understood due to similarities in Italian and Spanish.NOT even BASIC like pineapple juice, orange juice was understood and mixed up.It was crazy.Their standing is that they need not make any effort because the tourists visit anyway.In addition they tend to ignore you.The receptionists at the hotel similarly struggled with English and had to keep repeating myself and slow down all the time in order to make myself understood with varying success.You cannot work in a restaurant in Hungary if you are not able to understand and speak at least the basics of the language and take an order.Pop in to a McDonalds (lowest paid job possible in Hungary)and check out language skills of staff:)
@freemanfox3018
@freemanfox3018 9 лет назад
Seychellois lady Actually, people at McDonalds aren't the lowest-paid in the country, the ones being forced by the government to work if they want to get their unemployment benefits are the lowest-paid. Also, when you say everyone who works at restaurants in Hungary speaks at least basic English, you must be talking about restaurants in tourist areas. I've been to many, many restaurants here in Budapest where the waiters don't speak a word of English.
@seychelloislady5348

+Freeman Fox Well my husband is Italian and he was shocked how well he could get by with English and Italian in Budapest.In the contrary I cannot make myself understood at all over there as no one speaks English there.No one in his family and town,maybe one cousins wife a bit.My problem,have to learn Italian:(
@freemanfox3018
@freemanfox3018 8 лет назад
+Seychellois lady Yes, in certain areas of downtown Budapest, and a few parts of Buda, lots of people speak foreign languages. In most of Budapest, where there are very few foreigners, foreign languages are rarely understood. Everyone who speaks foreign languages is either working downtown or has moved to foreign countries to work. When I was in Italy, even in smaller cities, I had no trouble finding people in the downtown areas who spoke English. I speak almost no Italian, and they didn't speak Hungarian, so English is how I got around. Of course, I was a tourist, and stayed in the tourist areas or downtown, so that probably explains our different experiences.

I am of Indian origin & loved Budapest, but never had a race issue. And I agree that Hungary is not super cheap, but from British Sterling perspective it is somewhat cheap, but don't take it for granted. The Pest side is where the real architecture is. The summer walks from one bridge to another is great, but Budapest is a quitish city. It does not have that absolute edgy vibrancy chaotic that can be found in a lot of other cities. In the winters the streets in the evening are dead.

And taxi drivers around the world are notoriusly awful ... meh! I just put forth the best attitude I can and hope for the best. But I never, ever judge an entire city and/or country on a few bad apples. Dear God ---I know I've been a bitch a time or two under duress and would hate that someone would equate all Americans and/or Texans by my crappy day. Just sayin' :D

Hates 1. Not as cheap as you think - True. Pubs are still affordable, restaurants are either pricey or crappy. 2. Your lack of Hungarian will hurt you - Try to get directions from people between age 25 and 30. It's required to speak at least one foreign language in college. Otherwise Hungarians don't really speak languages. 3. Taxi Ripoffs - True, always call for cabs. Although public transportation is just as good as in S.F. or N.Y. 4. Intolerance - See my comment below. 5. Bad Service - Vary true. Even Hungarians are annoyed with it. Loves 1. Bath Houses and Spas - My friends love them, I never tried. 2. Castle Hill - Nice. Souvenirs are kind of crappy though. Buy them somewhere else. 3. The Architecture - Tourists usually love it. I grew up with it, so I couldn't care less :D 4. Walking along the Danube - Take a walk to Kopaszi gát. Nice little park. Remember, drinking in public is legal in Hungary, so bring a bottle of wine or six pack and have a picnic with your friends or your love. 5. Nightlife in Budapest - I think that's the biggest deal in Budapest. If that's a priority for you, you should definitely visit the city. It's pretty cheap too.

Better for you if you go immediately to the third world little bighead, and take your homeless, ungreatful head out of your ass, and after some nice experiences with "tolerance, taxis, pubs, service" you can go home with crying and with kissing your homeland's soil. You are very lucky, that you can live in Hungary, but you don't deserve it, because you shit inside your bed. Let's learn proudness to the US., cosmopolite homeless, or go to the Paris suburb, if you want to know, what it means racism! Magyar létedre talán nem ide kellene az önlehúzó kommenteket firkálnod, vannak ahhoz megfelelő politikai forumok, és van is képviseleted, kicsi de annál nagyobb hangú, pont mint a rasszista tükórképeiteknek....

This video warns tourists that even if it's a great place to visit, they have to get ready for certain issues. Nobody said that it's like a third world country or it's the worst place in Europe, just that they have to get ready for some inconveniences, so they'll enjoy their stay and won't bitch about things like bad service. So we should say thank you to Wolter, because his video helps more with Hungarian tourism than your fake and blinded nationalism ever could. If you love your country, you shouldn't ignore it's problems 'cos that's the only way you can make it better. It's not nearly perfect. No country is.

dlovas Earthly Heavenly Kingdom is perfect, but still not existing. I like and accept real critics about my homeland, but I didn't accept fake lies. If someone emphasizing things, what existing all over the world (racism),it means that he have a spite against my country. Defending ourself is normal all over the world, only some wretching mind cosmopolitists think, that warning some bumptious blithe smarty-guy is equal with nationalism. Or you think, that you didn't belonging to any nation, or you belonging secretly to another, and for this reason attacking your own nation? I don't mind. Wolter's guide in 80 percent can acceptable, but the other 20 percent is blitchy bullshit. But until Budapest have almost 6 million visitors/year, and this video watched only 60 000 people in the last 3 years, I didn't worrying nothing....:-)

Don't call for taxis to and from the airport! You can take a very reasonably priced shuttle to and from the airport. You do not need to take taxis! You can get anywhere using the metro anyway. And it's not "seeyo," it's pronounced "seeyaw." It's spelled, in Hungarian, szia. But don't say that, because that's informal. Use formal greetings unless you know the person. And Budapest is not expensive! I didn't experience the intolerance that you were speaking about. You're definitely right about some of the waitresses. They can be a horror. Don't tip them when they treat you like shit. You don't have to.

Sorry Wolter, your liyng machine isn't working. Budapest voted as the 2nd best city of the world together with Firenze. The magazine said this year's list was the most comprehensive ever, with 1.3 million votes cast for a whopping 16,000 properties around the world. "Everything about Budapest was entrancing." It seems most of the reviewers agreed with this feedback about this beautiful European city." 1.) You CAN get by eating at inexpensive takeaway type places and there are restaurants to cater for all budgets. 2.) The Hungarian language is challenging but I found that most people speak English and we had no problem at all. 3.) Yes it does make sense to pre-book taxis from the airport. However, within the city the public transport is EXCELLENT! Metro/subway, buses and trams are everywhere and are inexpensive. Plus it is a lovely city to explore on foot and the hop on-hop off bus is a good way to get about. 4.) I'm white and straight so I can't really comment on this point, but I didn't notice anything neo nazi. However I don't doubt that it exists and it is indeed becoming a problem in plenty of places, sadly. 5.) I only noticed bad service in one instance, the rest of the time was fine. Someone else pointed out that Americans have a higher expectation of service, which personally I think can be a bit false and over the top! My trip was about 2 years ago. I highly recommend Budapest as a year-round option and is possibly the loveliest city I've ever been to. Thank you Wolters World for the videos. From a UK remoaner

Do not say "remoaner". Britain cannot survive without EU, because it should never have joined. When it did the establishment went hogwild stripping Britain of its self-sufficiency, turning it into a parasite. A parasite cannot survive without its host. Soveriegnty is for those that can afford it. ~If UK leaves EU, it will become actually more dependant than ever on foriegn deals with climbing prices, reducing its global worth, turning it into a small, insignificant ghetto-country.

This is bullshit. I've lived in Hungary for twenty years. Taxis are regulated - they all charge the same amount. When you get to the airport, do NOT ask the hotel to send you a taxi (as they WILL rip you off) - use the airport taxi company. Secondly, I have never met an antisemitic person in Hungary, though I have met plenty in western European countries (England, France and Germany, and especially Austria, but not in Hungary). The one thing that is true is the waiters - they really are beyond the pale of bad. And by the way, you DO get ripped off in restaurants as a foreigner. Lastly, it's the cheapest capital city in Europe, However, you need to watch what you eat and drink, as in particular, shorts are very expensive, and so is wine in restaurants.

I so agree. If someone (and this not only applies to Muslims) has a problem with adapting to a countries culture and values - then that person shouldn´t come to begin with. Why allowing parallel societies which get exceptions from the law, like allowing them to kill animals in a way which is forbidden to all others due to the needless torture like halal and kosher slaughter? Or why allowing them to teach in their mosques misogynistic speeches, like that women have to obey to men and are subordinate? I will never tolerate that. And if this makes me intolerant, then I am proud of being intolerant. Contrary to them, I value human rights and thus equality for all people. Not tto speak of these immigrants of likely being not loyal to their country they move to but rather to their country of origin. You can see this especially in Germany, where many people with turkish origins still don´t consider them as Germans but Turkish and support and use their vote in favour of Turkeys interests. We are stupid if we think we can solve our demographic problems by importing other problems.

If you're allergic to rudeness, like I am, you're probably better off staying away from Budapest altogether. Perhaps things are different now, but about 10 years ago, no visit was complete without a couple of really shocking encounters with people who were supposedly there to serve you. From bus drivers shouting and swearing at you for the audacity of daring to ask where the bus was going, to waiters literally kicking you out of the restaurant mid-meal because they wanted to close down the section you were dining at.

Well, I'm hungarian and let me say that some parts of this video are not true. The service problems are true if you are from a country like England or Germany but that is not our fault. It's the government's. We got much less payment than other people. And this is why a lot of younger people going to other countries for better jobs. I think Hungary would be very very cheap for an english man for example. I just got home from a tour in England and i gotta say it was freaking expensive! Yes. There are SOME neo-nazis in the counrty and this is a thing that normal people in this counrty ashamed. But that doesn't mean that every people in hungary are racist! This is really doesn't mean that. And if you're from Africa and some people watching you on a tram, it doesn't mean it either. Perhaps they're watching your beautiful skin (you have really beautiful skin) or your georgous smile. This country doesn't live it's best times so yes, McDonald's doesn't give free ketchup, and I was very surprised when I got it in England. Sorry for my english...was it that bad?... I hope that you all doesn't have very bad opinions about hungarian people because the most of the bad things are not our fault (slow trams and buses, diety streets in the downtown, poorly educated people, not developing - old things). Oh, and I would be very happy if i could hear more english-speaking people on the bus...

Do not generalise as you can hurt peoples' feelings. Sure, older people don't really speak english, but it is often the case in most countries. Younger generations definitely speak the language at least on a basic level as it is taught in most educational institutions. Service isn' t crap at all. I am also wondering where you got the idea that hungarians are racist. Hungary used to be a war-torn country that is reflected in older generations so that some of those people are less tolerant with foreign people and generally have a simplistic approach towards the modern world. However, the younger generation is the exact opposite of the above. We need to understand this kind of social segregation before judging the entire nation. I really liked your other video about Iceland but you aren't spot on here. Maybe you'd spent 3 days in Budapest that doesn't really capture the atmosphere and social values of the city. Additionally, Hungary is Central Europe.

You just pulled the "regular hate crimes" out of your ass, they dont fit there anymore because you are obiviously full of shit. While in other countries, like france, germany it is really common, people even get shot because they are jewish, in hungary the worst thing in the last 20 years that happened is that someone said "fuckin jew" to a rabbi on the street. And then even the President of hungary apologized for that. So either get your facts together or stop deliberately lying.

You call Nationalism a problem. I'm so sorry that i want to see little Hungarian kids running around on Hungarian soil in the future.

I think you over-exaturated hungarian "neo-nazi" problem. You should not make such storng remarks without knowing the history of the people and the nation. In addition, patriotsim is nothing to be fearful of.

You may be right. Be even in America, people who feel the need to downplay racism while speaking highly of patriotism have given me good reason for caution.

The people who live there made that place as it is. They worked through hundreds of years, protected it with their blood, built every pavement, school, city that is there. What makes you think you have a right for it? What makes you think you can take that land away? The people there might be white. True. And keeping the country the same, could be interpreted as basicly keeping it white. That is true. It's a white country. It doesn't sound nice. But just because you are a "minority" or some other BS, that doesn't give you rights. That doesn't make you special. It doesn't mean that you are not an invader or an outsider. Even if you come here, drop a baby or born such way in Hungary, that still doesn't make you a hungarian. Not letting hungarians defend their own land, because they are WHITE is racism. That is the book definition. Keeping Hungary as the first, makes you a hungarian. Serving the nation, your people, protecting it, helping it, norturing it. That makes you a hungarian. That is not a hard thing to understand. What many fails to understand is that these white nations are good because of those "Whiiite people". Because those "whiite" people kept it well. The people made that land as good as it is. If the people however whom immigrate, be any color, race, or religion CANNOT keep it as good, even ruin it, than they are not welcome. But these countries here in Europe were always welcoming to good people. They always welcomed people of worth. They are lived by multiple races, cultures, even multiple nations. BUT these people united, to stand taller together. So they could do even More to the land and the people on it. This is what the western idea of utopy is. If a lot of immigrant is unwelcomed because of their incapabalities, to act or live properly- Because they are not making the land better, but that of worse, than they are unwelcomed in the boundaries of these countries. Even if they are massed in the same religion, color, or race. Doing otherwise would be Racism. By book definition. Calling for racism when most is just not worthy is not an idea most accepts. Usually things as such end in nacionalism.

+MamboJambo where do good men like you hide these days?
@Kareszkoma
@Kareszkoma 8 лет назад
Venon Sumsger That was just a general knowledge kind of thing. Even the most unskilled workers know that. Ask a man how would he feel if strangers were to move in his house, use it, dirty it, without his permission or rent. But to make it further-> What happens, when he sees that they break his things, amortize the furniture, live down his house, everything he has? He would get angry. What would happen if the media were to call on him, for beating those invaders and throw them out? What happens when others see the media do that? What happens when the police is introduced into the situation, saying that this is just as much their home as his is? When others see the police do such? Things are very simple. The media likes to make a big fuss about it, because their word means nothing, and nothing is hard to sell. But to answer your question, I'm teaching english, and learning to be a confectioner/pastry cook.

Went there last year in May with my friend, i fell in love with the city. So many beautiful things to see. The people were nice and helpful and most young people spoke english so we didnt have problem asking information when we needed it. I am African, yeah I got the usual 'curious stare' from people but nothing bad or offensive. But then again i was there just for 3 days and went mostly to touristy places. And weather was lovely! Thanks Mark i love allllllll your videos and info you provide!

All the black folks, calm down. Nobody is going to hurt you. Ok, some people will stare at you on tram, train or bus. But, it's because your race is still kinda unique here. Not because they hate you or want to provoke you. Even if you hear a word 'néger' (pronounced appr.: naeger) don't be upset. This word has nothing to do with nigga in Hungary. It simply means you are black. Yes, service isn't as polite as it is in UK for example. First, people don't get one and a half large in a month and we are more explicit, more honest. Not like those sneaky smiley english. We are like southern americans or irish. If my boss or a previous guest pissed me off than I'll kick your ass too, if you give me the smallest reason to do so. ;) Hey, no worries. This country is getting more tolerant. So, grab a beer, put your ass down and chill the fuck out. Hahaa

not to mention the the Hungarian hard candy called Negro :) It was named after its inventor, Pietro Negro (the candy itself is black) The word Negro only means this candy in Hungarian, no one would use it to insult a black person. no racism there :)

Good Day.....Southern Americans have been typecast. The movies and television shows like to make people living in the south as racist and stupid as possible. They only show the negative news and nothing positive. Trust me, Southerners can be the nicest people you will ever meet and do not all carry guns. Southerners will go out of their way to help people with anything and are very trusting. If you kick someone's butt you will end up in jail and/or sued. Not worth it. Besides, you just don't see many people act like that and if you know of someone that behaves that way you just ignore them. Anyway, I hope you have a great day and take care.

Hi Walter, great vid! me and my best friend are thinking of going to budapest in July - were thinking of going to an air b n b centralised. would you say it's a good city to go as two eighteen year old girls who love a bit of culture and a bit of partying?
@adamvarnusz7171
@adamvarnusz7171 7 лет назад
Becky G Hey I live in Budapest and I would encourage you to visit our city. AirBnB is generally ok and safe. I would recommend that you stay in the 5th district if you want central location and dont mind noisy nightlife, or the 1st district which is just across the river but more quiet. The city is very safe however just in case during the night avoid the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th districts. The 5th district around Deak square turns into a giant party scene every evening, especially weekends. As for culture you can go to the castle hill, visit the citadel on gellert hill for views, go to the gellert bath, etc. If you take a cab, as he said dont stop one on the street, instead find out your address and order one on the phone, for example +36-1-2-666-666 will get you good cab service. I hope you visit with your friend, and enjoy your stay.

I don't think you will problems. I am hungarian, and I lived here my whole life. I am more than happy to give you some solutions :) 1. Not as cheap as you think Avoid the frequented places. If you see souvenir sign or something like that, avoid it right away. Specially when you are in the city center and you see a cool place to eat just go to the next corner, deeper in the city and you will find a cheaper one.
