Not so..….If you're ever in Grand Cayman the car drivers are always on the alert as to who might even think about crossing the roadway...the drivers come to a full stop...it's a great place for pedestrians.

Rome is loaded with tourists. My advice is to go into every church you come across. They are amazingly beautiful. My dream is to go back someday and go on a church crawl.

Just remember to not be rude. Try not to speak, or at least use the softest voice possible when inside a church. They tend to have powerful acoustics and even a whisper can disturb the believers. I know Americans can be very loud even with their "inside" voice. Try to respect the culture and symbolism of those places, because while they may be public and often even tourist attractions, they are still consecrated churches and a place of quiet meditation. In Europe, the same rule applies to museums, especially art galleries. The unwritten rule of common sense is that art is best appreciated in silence. I cannot remember how many times I was trying to understand a painting and appreciate its beauty only to be disturbed by a group of loud tourists (the Spanish are almost as bad as Americans) laughing out loud in a quiet gallery, God knows what for, because the paintings certainly were not funny.

Love Italy, and I am going back this summer :) , also one more point, if the menu has many items, walk.away. or better yet RUN, too many items on the menu means that is preheated (microwave) food, small menu, one language (Italian) and you will have authentic Italian cuisine, too many items +multiple languages = Crap!

Another don't: At restaurant, *don't order ketchup to put on pasta!!!* In Rome and in the rest of Italy it is considered as a heresy, a blasfemy! Anyway, I now that it's an exaggeration but, for an Italian like me, it's very unpleasant to hear :D

I have to agree with everything you stated. My wife and I got lost and ended up stopping at this small restaurant trying to get back to our hotel and I had one of the best meals of my life, it was like 6 courses and the cost was a lot less than the other places we were looking at. It was amazing.

I was in Rome last week. I booked a "skip the line" ticket for the colloseum. We went into the "skip the line" line for the security check. Which was, about 90 minutes. Next to us, was the normal, "buy tickets and then go trough security" line. Which was about 30 minutes. So no, skip the line is absolutely not always a good thing. It surely wasn't for us, and everybody else in our line. Everybody was pretty pissed off.

Hey man I worked at the Colosseum and I know what you're talking about, maybe I can help explaining. I don't know what's your case but people usually buy reservations or "skip the line" from private companies that basically lie to tourists to take them as soon as possible. The "problem" is that for security reason it's not possible to have more than 3000 people inside the Colosseum at the same time, each time someone enters or exit the gates will memorize it so they know how many people are inside. Sometimes they have to close the entrance to wait some people exit and then re-open it. And then there's the security check that everyone have to do. So basically there's no "skip the line", because you can't really know if there will be a line! It's a thing private agency scream to make you buy the tour with them, even if they know very well how things work, if something happen they just blame the Colosseum and make you think that it's our fault. The only way to go inside as fast as possible is to make a reservation on the official website of the Colosseum (which is coopculture) that have an certain entrance time on it. With that reservation the Colosseum knows exatly how many people will enter for sure at that time and basically keeps low the number of people inside by slowing the entrance or stopping people who don't have any reservation or have an open one. Privates don't tell you nothing about it and probably you're going to pay 3 times more than an official tour. Don't trust anybody outside the Coliseum, just ask at the official Coopculture workers at the gates.

I bought a skip-the-line ticket and was through the security gates in about 30 minutes, but they closed the place to more people at least four times while I was walking around. I made sure to get there close to opening time though, so that may have been why I was able to get through faster than the original commenter.

When we went it was years ago we had the Roma Pass, the longest line at the Coliseum was the skip-the-line, the second longest line was the one to buy the tickets, the line for the Roma Pass was 0 we walked right in and we paid nothing

I think it all can depend on a lot of factors. I went to the Colosseum to enter at 9:45 and there were 2 people in front of me. An hour later, when I exited, there was a long line. I had a 2-day "full experience ticket" for €24 (the official Coopculture website) that included Palatine Hill and the Forum. The line was awful so I decided to visit at 9 the next morning. There was NO ONE there. 😂 I actually thought I was in the wrong place. Walked right in and practically had the whole of the Palatine Hill and the Forum to myself. Timing is everything, apparently.

Mark let me tell you another tip: gladiators in Rome are a big issue, they are not standing outside the monuments legally! They always try to steal money (they can ask you 80 euros for a picture!). by the way, your videos are great! keep going!

I went to Rome in Sept. Knowing the tips from this video was beneficial.. Most of these apply to every big tourist city. #4 for example. I had great food from local "off the track" places whereas others I know said food in Rome was bad. Learning a little Italian was both fun and rewarding as I was able to order things without feeling like a rude tourist.

I agree about good walking shoes. You can walk far in Rome, so it helps to have good sneakers. I think the Italian people were great wherever we went. They were friendly and helpful if you needed something.

What a great little video. I went to Rome last week for the first time and loved it. Luckily, although I had not seen this video before I went there I was aware of the queues for the Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel and Basilica of St Peter and for the Colosseum so I did book the 'Skip the Line' tours. VERY worthwhile as you can stand in some of the queues for 3 hours or more. And as to the shoes, yes, those cobblestones can wreak havoc on your feet so good, stout shoes are a must. Absolutely outstanding city and one that I will visit again soon.

I'd like to add, if an african man greets you "heey my frieieieiend", don't shake hands with him. He will play like he's you're friend and before you know it he's put a bracelet around your wrist, and tightens it too. He's being all friendly but as soon as you separate ways he'll come after you saying "his babygirl has her birthday" so if you please give him money. You can't give him the bracelet back, he'll keep talking, asking for money, trying to make you feel guilty. After the first one tricked me, in the next few days there were 2 more trying to do the same trick!

CreRay also I'm from San Francisco so be wary of these people who ask for directions and their mate comes from behind and takes your wallet while u are distracted. The bracelet thing is old school. Don't let anyone touch u period. When they come up to u put both your hands up and say hello and goodbye and walk away. It works!!! U throw them off they can't get next to u. They need contact to do their work. Keep an eye on those who walk up to u and they won't even try. I'm a woman and never get hustled. Also dress like the locals and u won't stick out. If in San Francisco NEVER wear shorts! Dead giveaway. Even tho it's freezing or hot we never wear shorts in the City. And never say Frisco. Dead giveaway u r a tourist.

We had the same thing happen in Jan 2019. Fell for it to begin with, we was too polite to tell them to go away. They are at every tourist spot, they get your attention by saying "hey, nice shoes" or "black and white same colour". Even telling them to leave you alone won't stop them, they really ruin the atmosphere. One even striked my partner in the head for ignoring them.

Also, don't forget that churches have strict dress code---no shorts and no tube tops or strap tops, no mini skirts, so better be prepared (like have a silk scarf to put over your shoulders) because there tons of breath-taking churches you dont wanna miss out. p.s. My 2y.o. daughter loved Rome so mush she didn't want to leave! She cried so hard!

Hey Mark! Next time you visit Rome during the summer, spend a day in Cisterna. We do not have much, but there is the Giardino di Ninfa which is an enjoyable (if you do not have any allergies :P) artificial garden with a castle inside; plus Cisterna (di Latina) is just 40 minutes of train from Rome.

I was in Rome about 14 months ago I think you hit it spot on. I was warned about the restaurants you mention, but one time for lunch I was tired, needed a place for wifi and saw a restaurant with a menu with okey price for a Carbonara and sat down. The food was not good, they charged 4-5 euros for a small Diet Coke and they added a high service charge on the bill. Oh well :)

Just wander and visit ALL the places open to the public on both sides of the Tevere/Tiber. There are hidden treasures everywhere in Roma. Some of the most amazing artwork is found in those small chapels throughout the city. Travel if you can with someone you like and can stand for extended periods of time :).. It's more memorable anyway to share the experience. No matter how they portray it, Rome's not really that crowded, unless it's rush hour or opening time at the museums and attractions. The cruise ships send busloads of passengers in the mornings, but most return to the port before dinner. I've seen the lines wrapped around three walls of the museums an hour before opening, to then come back by after lunch to see only 20-30 people in line. Upon opening, it's like a huge wave of humanity. it's not unusual for someone to be within your 'zone' in a few of the galleries; it can get a bit crowded. The chapels and museums all have posted signs with operating hours... and they'll all be there after lunch, so go visit somewhere else in the meantime to avoid crowds. (Just don't live that scared, paranoid stay-at-home life... get out to see how the rest of the world lives!)

There is no place to sit down. When you dine and pay more, then you get a table. But be prepared to spend the day on your feet, or at least a significant part of it.

My advice to protect from pick pockets is to have a safety pin or two pinning your pocket closed so pick pockets can't just reach in.

I also use a safety pin to pin under any closed zipper, zipper pockets on jacket, zippers on purses/backpacks....They can't unzip to get to your valuables. I also use carabiner clips on my backpack zippers to attach two zippers together. Anything that makes it harder to pick pocket will deter. Watch out for those groups of laughing teenage girls. They almost got my husband's wallet as the subway door closed.They stepped off just as the doors closed! Hope this helps!

Went to Rome for the first time few weeks ago and got hooked. We stayed in a fantastic room right next to Vittorio Emmanuele station and we love it - many local restaurant, quiet and just 10 minutes of nice walk from Colosseum and Basilica de San Celemente (not in many tourist guides but so worth seeing). I would add one more thing to don't - Don't pay more for the use of elevator to reach the dome at the St Peter Basilica. It only gets you half way there (and help with the easier part of the trip up) - you will still have to take really steep steps to get to the very top of the dome.

Rome is my favorite place in the world, but pick pockets were everywhere, and were very aggressive. We saw people knocked down and their valuables taken. We even had gypsies come up to us and try to go through our pockets without even being discrete. In one case, we shoved them away and they spit at us. But aside from the pick pockets, it's an absolutely wonderful place.

I had that with a restaurant close by the trebi fountain. 1 cola+beer and 2 pizza. €49.95 Long wait and not so good food. We have been walking all day and on our last day and we thought this restaurant was oke, not realising it was 50m away from the fountain..

Mark, actually the last time I went to the Vatican Museum there was no line. I had pre-booked a ticket as you had suggested. The problem was the museum itself was insanely crowded to be uncomfortable. That and it was so hot inside my girlfriend felt like fainting. We left early after the Sistine chapel and had a delightful lunch at a sidewalk restaurant near the Vatican. The Collosium maybe had a 10-12 minute wait. Interesting, but would not like to see it again. Thank you for all of your commentary.

It's so grateful to hear someone speaking with this enthusiasm about Italy! I would say, you ARE italian. A few personal suggestions when looking for a restaurant in italy: - if the menu is in italian only, then go for it. If it has some fancy international translations like "amatriciana's spaghetti", or "carbonara's..." then, just don't. We wouldn't go. By the way, just ask to people in the street, they will be pleased to suggest you their favorite place. - (take with elasticity) if a "primo piatto" is above 10/15 euros (depending on the zone), then probably it's because the restaurant is for tourists, or it's very sophisticated, which is something good if you are prepared, but probably not what you're looking for. Knowing in advance a few words helps, but it's not essential, as italians will probably teach you those words in the very first few interactions with them. I'm pretty sure, especially if you go to Rome. Enjoy :)

I always have my real wallet hidden and in my backpack I carry an old wallet filled with pieces of paper which have "Fuck you" written on them. So when a pickpocketer opens it, they get a bitter surprise :)

One thing I can say for any area with high pickpot rates in general, no matter if you wear shorts or pants or whatever, invest in the ones with the pockets that have ZIPPERS. It can seem tedious to repeatedly zip and unzip your pocket to grab something, but that tiny bit of security can be the difference between someone able to grab something right out of your pocket as you walk by or bump into them. Also has the added benefit of nothing being able to fall out of your pocket either which is good for things like tickets that can slip out easy

Don't let people rip you off at the metro ticket vending machines. Some will get you your ticket and keep your change, or punch the button for an extra ticket for them. Don't let anyone touch your luggage at the train station, they'll ask for a tip or steal it. Don't interact with gypsies. Don't stay or eat at the Termini neighborhood

J Hoad I stopped by the train station. Went with the getto-like train line that went to Sorrento. Stayed 4 days in Scafatti and saw Pompeii and walked on top of Vursuvious. Also went to visit Capri.

+Wolters World via Nazionale is a street full of bars and restaurants. when I was there in 2007. .the price of food really wasn't that expensive. we saw a few 'homeless' people in the area and the way they were dressed they didn't seem homeless.

#7. Be honest.. Don't take kids under 10. They scream on the plane (their little ears) can't take the pressure, they don't remember the trip, they slow u down, they get tired so fast. Leave them home with grandma and grandpa. That way you and your mate have a comfortable trip and the grandparents have the joy of taking care of your little ones.

It is incredibly important for children to get used to an learn the value of travel, history, and expanding horizons as early as possible. Additionally not everyone has the luxury of having someone who can look after their kids. However, if one is incapable of teaching one's children how go behave properly in public settings, they should not be there.

Just got back and only agree with the being safe with valuables part and good shoes, but that's common sense stuff, not unique to Rome. We did not book any tours, but the skip the line guys are waiting for you to sign you up for their commission, no need in booking in advance, we got right into the coliseum and Vatican. Once in, we intentionally "lost" our guide and did our own tour, now that's a good tip. Ate for 14 days at both tourist and hidden restaurants and I have to say, it all tasted great to me. If you feel like throwing money away in a fountain, well, that's one way to waste money I guess. Two weeks in March and not a drop of rain. People go at the wrong time. Weather was perfect for this "off season".

Quick hint for the Colosseum. If you didn't make a reservation, look around for guides around it. They book groups in advance and gather them around the Colosseum. We even did a bargain, because it's cheaper than the guided tour held by the monument itself. Our guide knew his stuff and was a nice guy. Afterwards you're also free to roam. I noticed this seemed common practise, so i don't know if the other guides were as good or trustworthy as ours... But at least i got a good experience out of it. And was able to cut the queue

Totally agree with booking for the vatican - we did the early bird tour last time we were here and it was definitely worth it as queues were massive! Mind for the Colosseum and Forum we left it until the first Sunday of the month so we all got in free and not much of a queue so perfect. Our longest queue in Rome was actually to get into the Castel Sant'Angelo but only around 25 mins. I would also add don't spend a fortune going to Rainbow MagicLand Theme Park in the morning when you can catch a special Rainbow MagicLand Theme Park bus from the railway station to the theme park and get entry from midday until 11.30pm pickup for a tiny fraction of the cost especially if a family of 4 where you can save a fortune! Also later all the day trippers have lift for last buses and trains so only local Italians with cars and the people on our bus left so much smaller queues for rides!
