Visiting Australian Magpies Around My Neighbourhood

I love how they all stop singing at the exact same time every time.

I love Maggies, I have a mated pair and their offspring that have made my backyard their home for generations. It's been probably at least six to seven generations of chicks they have raised here. Love their voices, such a purely Aussie sound! Great Vid!!

I do love how maggies are quite happy to make friends with people. there was one dude that had a park between the lunch bar and work, where I would usually sit on the grass n eat. he had a broken beak, and wasnt part of a group. seemed to do alright for himself tho. at lunch i'd share a bit of whatever I was having, n he'd come and have a chat. but would also check in with me in the morning and afternoon as I walked past. just to say Hi. the other mob im on excellent terms with, never fed them a scrap. but they are in the park near the train station. I make a point of talking to them, saying nice things to them and their babies. they seem to introduce me to the young'uns, n tell em im OK. just cos im friendly. i notice they are quite aggressive to some of the other station regulars, but they are very chill with me. TL;DR, be nice to your maggies, they're cool. be a dick, they'll respond in kind. n they are faster, more maneuverable and have sharper weapons than you.

Beautiful, love Maggies in both New Zealand and Aussie they respond to human kindness and will take food from your hand, mimic and play with domestic pets in the back yard. As long as people don’t use this as a tactic to abuse them it’s beautiful seeing these birds so animated and happy having fun.

And people thought I was Strange giving my pies names and think I can't tell them apart, my favourite animal on this planet along with butcher birds.

This made me cry a bit. It is such a beautiful thing to see that your Magpie friends remember you and socialise with you long after they've left the backyard. You have a special thing going with these birds and I am humbled. I aspire to have this relationship with the birds in my area. I have 2 dogs though. One, old Jack ignores birds and other animals. But Bella, the relatively young girl has too much 'chase/hunt' instinct. The birds are aware of that, so they remain slightly cautious.

That's very cute! I love your videos. We have a pair of Maggies that hang around our place too, they're very friendly. The male does some amazing mimicry calls, imitating various bird's calls in the area.

The way some of them run up to you is just precious… especially that one running with its wings up.

One of my favourite memories of living in Adelaide! We called it “fluting”. Magpies in Canada make no such sound, although they can be pretty interesting creatures, especially as they mess around in the snow under a spruce tree in winter at 30 below. How do they do that!!

I recently came to Australia from USA. At 4am I heard a beautiful bird call and was mesmerized it. It took 4 months to know which bird call it was and it was Australian magpie. Thanks for the great video.

Such a beautiful call they have and these guys are very brave climbing all over the car. I have a continual flow of Magpies come to my property in Melbourne Australia, they come to drink, bath & preen in my 8 bird baths. New baby magpies every few months. Bedfordshire magpies are much less musical than Australian ones: they sound exactly like the "white noise" lorry reversing alarms that are now mandatory on most building sites -and the little buggers are beginning to understand the possibilities in this.

They are smart birds - they remember faces. You need to feed them now and again to make friends with them - otherwise they can attack you in nesting season.

Nothing like that warbling in the morning!
