@@TokidokiTraveller Till literally last year I thought mango madness was when people went mad for mangoes and would eat loads of mangoes because they are so good and if you live in a climate where they grow you'd just eat loads and loads of them.

The markets charge what it will bear, for example that same mango here in Florida is $2-3 each depending on where you buy it.

@@curiousnomadic No producer is letting their produce rot on purpose. You only see crops rot if the cost to harvest them is more than the amount that would be paid at market. I have a mango tree in my yard, for example when it comes harvesting time I have to break out a ladder, and make sure that I harvest it with the stem on it. Then take it inside removing the stem under a special wash so it doesn't burn the skin. Professional farms use cherry pickers, and sometimes use mechanization but it is still largely done by hand. Finally you have sorting and transpiration to the market. Customs fees, inspections, and the associated costs. All this costs money and drives up the cost. But the sellers are going to want to get the maximum amount of money for their product. So in cheaper markets it is cheaper, for example the Latino market has the cheapest mangos around as they cater to market without as much money, while at Whole Foods you are paying a whole lot more.

@@curiousnomadic yeah that was on purpose but it wasn't for price reasons. The fields were infected with citrus canker, and Florida law requires all plants within a certain distance destroyed. The farmers don't want that to happen because it takes years for the field to become commercially viable again.

@@curiousnomadic You should've have specified, that wasn't that they wanted to force higher prices, but that it would cost them MORE to pick them then they would sell at market. That happens occasionally when there is an unusual weather pattern.

Yeah the super expensive fruits are not the norm but even then the fruit is not cheap compared to many different countries, here in UK mangoes are around $1 and you can get them for less if you look for it.

Yes the expensive ones are single fruit from a single tree. The farmer cut the other fruits so that a single fruit will absorb all the nutrition.

it's so interesting how they developed this branded fruit market but it never managed to really get outside of japan. i think it's really cool and if you think it's too expensive you can just buy a regular one.

that's how it was with Persimmons when I was little...so many Persimmon trees but then a million would fall and rot...it was the worst fermenty smell and all the bees and wasps LOVED it

@@carriepadgett2743 Fun how that works huh. Persimmons are another rather pricy fruit, but one point you could have had as many as you wanted for nothing at all.
