Magnificent

The Berlin Philharmonic has long been one of the world's greatest orchestras, if not the greatest ! And Herbert von Karajan honed their sound to a level of sheer perfection that more or less killed classical music stone dead for almost a generation ! The "Karajan Sound" did approach perfection in the repertoire that it suited. But, oddly enough, Karajan had always had a strong interest in Baroque music, not that his "style" suited Baroque music at all. But, over the years, his style also changed. He never got as far as "original instruments" but he did get to much smaller orchestras and quite fiery sound. The Berlin Philharmonic, fabulous instrumentalists to a man, seemed to take to this and there has been quite a strong - and exciting- Baroque element to their programmes recently. This superb concert with Andrea Marcon seems to be in that pattern. I certainly don't think Karajan would be turning in his grave to hear "his boys" playing in this style, I think he would be thrilled. After all, there is more to life than Richard Strauss, Anton Bruckner and Richard Wagner and its mastery of the Baroque style simply confirms the Berlin Philharmonic's continuing place at the pinnacle.
